Report- No Suspension For Richards

According to the Twitter of Flyers beat writer Frank Seravalli, no suspension for Mike Richards according to Bill Daly.

added 11:49am, via Frank Seravalli of Frequent Flyers at the Philadelphia Daily News,

After a 12-hour wait, the Daily News has learned that Flyers captain Mike Richards will not be suspended for his open ice hit on Florida’s David Booth on Saturday night.

“The hit was reviewed by the Hockey Ops staff,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Daily News Sunday morning, “and was determined to not warrant any supplemental discipline.”

Daly told us that the play, as reported on Frequent Flyers last night, was not reviewed by NHL executive vice president for hockey operations Colin Campbell because of a possible conflict of interest. Campbell’s son Gregory is a forward for the Panthers.

Reactions To Richards Hit On Booth

from Chuck Gormley of Flyer Files,

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren defended Richards and called out Sexton, saying, “Randy should watch more hockey games.”

“It was a good hit,” Holmgren said. “I don’t see how they can (suspend him). Mike was doing his job. He was back tracking, he caught up to the play. His feet never left the ice. David Booth turned his head or it would have been a shoulder on shoulder hit. It’s a physical game and sometimes these things happen.

“Everybody in the league knows Mike isn’t a dirty player. He’s a player every team in the league covets.”…

Several Panthers were angered by the hit and said they thought Richards should be suspended.

“This is the same stuff we’re trying to put an end to,” Panthers defenseman Keith Ballard said. “He tried to hurt him. I understand it’s a split-second decision, but you’d think he’d have more respect than that. … He’s a good player and he plays hard and we respect that, but he did the exact same thing to (Thrashers forward) Colby Armstrong a few years ago.

Mike Richards is a good honest player, except when he does (stuff) like that and he’s done it before.

Mike Richards Short On Answers

from Sam Carchidi of Broad Street Bull,

In the grand scheme of things, Mike Richards refusing to answer reporters’ questions means little.

But, as the team’s captain, he is the face of the Flyers and a direct conduit to the fans....

Richards has vowed to freeze out the media. He is upset because of stories generated after former teammate Joffrey Lupul, now with Anaheim, was asked recently if he thought he was traded because the Flyers wanted to break up the players who live in Center City and enjoy the night life.

Lupul was asked the question when Anaheim played in Philly on Oct. 10. It was Lupul’s first time back since being part of the trade in which the Flyers acquired Chris Pronger.

After the Flyers blew a late 2-0 lead in that game and dropped a 3-2 shoot-out loss, Richards asked reporters not to mention their night life in their stories.

Surgery For Mike Richards

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post,

Flyers captain Mike Richards will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder Friday, the Courier-Post learned Tuesday.

According to club general manager Paul Holmgren, Richards is expected to need 10-12 weeks of recovery time.

Holmgren said he was also awaiting an MRI on Richards’ left shoulder, saying he might also require surgery on that shoulder as well. Richards, who Tuesday was named one of three finalists for the Selke Tro phy as the NHL’s top defensive forward, led the Flyers with five playoff points in six games.

All Mike Richards

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News Today,

Q: Who do you look at as your biggest competition to come out of the East?

A: I think it is a crapshoot right now.  You look at the standings from one, right to the bottom,… The Rangers have a good team, Ottawa has a good team.  Boston has only lost a handful of games this year too.

Evening Line

“It’s obviously a privilege to be part of such a prestigious organization and now be captain of it.  I am going to do my best. We have a lot of great team leaders right now on our team and we don’t have to change anything. I think that everyone really helps out around the dressing room. There are so many leaders that you just kind of have to do your own thing and more worry about yourself and help out where things are needed.”

Afternoon Line

“We made strides by signing different players to long-term deals. We just signed (Joffrey) Lupul, (Jeff) Carter’s here for a couple of years and the players we have, everyone gets along so the (dressing) room’s doing well. I think we’re just going to evolve as a team as we get older,” said the Flyers alternate captain and No. 1 centre.

“We made good strides last year in the playoffs and hopefully we can just move forward from there.”

Flyers Look To Richards

from Rich Hofmann of the Philadelphia Daily News,

Single-handedly, shorthandedly, Richards gave his team life. Alone, unassisted, Richards turned a game where his team still wasn’t good enough into a game where his team still had hope.

It is a remarkable quality that some athletes have - rising above the adversity. It is about skill and it is about effort and it is about backbone - and nobody ever doubted Mike Richards in any of those categories, and nobody would think of doubting him now.

He will allow, quietly, “It’s frustrating.” But that is it as far as his obvious public disappointment will go. He is very clinical in his dissection of a hockey game, even a game as big as this one. There is no pretense, no false bravado.

Asked what has to improve for Game 3, he says: “Similar things to what we did tonight. We just need to play better and more consistent throughout the game. We still feel we can play a little bit better and get more consistent.”

Richards A Key Player In Flyers/Capitals Series

from Ryan Dixon of the Hockey News,

For Philadelphia to beat Washington, Richards has to be the engine that drives the Flyers.

Certainly it’s important for Martin Biron to outplay Cristobal Huet in the nets; for Daniel Briere to be healthy and produce points; for the entire team to – as much as possible – clog the gears of the Russian tank known as Ovechkin.

But Richards embodies – albeit internally for the most part – that great fighting Philly spirit that must be unleashed to combat the assault Ovie is going to lay on the Flyers.

Richards, despite his modest size, is physical. He’s smart. Skilled. And most of all, he lives for this stuff.

Mike Richards Out With Injured Hamstring

via the Philadelphia Flyers,

The Flyers also learned after the game that All-Star center Mike Richards will be out three weeks with a left hamstring injury. The team’s MVP this season, playing in his 200th NHL game, collided with Bouwmeester in the third period and limped off of the ice. He did not return.

Mike Richards Enjoying His Hockey Life

from NHLPA.com,

Mike Richards has a dozen reasons to be smiling these days. His Philadelphia teammates and Flyers fans have many more.

Just how good is life for Richards, now in his third National Hockey League season?

Signing a 12-year contract extension and being named an All-Star, all within the span of two months, pretty much sums it up.

But even Richards, who leads the Flyers in several offensive categories, is amazed at how things have unfolded.

Throwing Money Around

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

Some 15 months ago, it was the Islanders committing budgetary lunacy, inking then-25-year-old netminder Rick DiPietro to a 15-year deal worth $67.5 million. The Goalie for Life at the time stood a sub.-500 58-62-13. With a 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh last night, the ex-BU Terrier has gone 46-31-11 since signing the historic pact.

Now we have the Flyers sizing up the 22-year-old Richards, the 24th overall pick in the 2003 draft, as their franchise piece going forward - up to and including the 2019-20 season (good seats still available for that ‘19-20 opener).

What’s it all about? Well, specifically, it’s about: 1. Thomas Vanek and 2. Dustin Penner. And, to a certain extent, Brad Richards, too.

The Richards Deal

from Piere LeBrun at Sporstnet,

Reaction around the league to the Richards deal has been a mixed bag. Privately, the NHL’s head office is not impressed and has made it a priority to seek term limits on contracts in the next collective bargaining agreement. The NHL Players’ Association will have a say in that, however, and will need a giveback in return for letting that happen. But that’s a story for another day.

One NHL GM, who obviously wanted anonymity, said he didn’t understand the point of the Richards deal.

“He’s not a $6-million player next year and he still would have been a restricted free agent,” said the GM. “The guy had 32 points last year. I know he’s had a great eight weeks so far… but could you not have just done a three-year deal at $4 million per year and then re-address it after that?

Richards Has Signs Of Leadership

from PhillyBurbs,

Of course it’s way too early to start drawing comparisons and it wouldn’t be fair.

But this is how it started nearly 40 years ago when a gap-toothed kid from a small town in Canada got a bunch of grizzled vets to follow his lead.

Namely, play each game as if it were going to be his last.

Only time will tell if Mike Richards someday is mentioned in the same sentence with Flyers legend Bobby Clarke.

Young Flyers Doing Their Part

from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,

But in the midst of a 6-1-0 start, the contributions of third-year pros Mike Richards and Jeff Carter should not be overlooked.

In fact, you could make the case their re-emergence as bona fide front line NHL talent has every bit as much to do with the Flyers becoming a force as anything else. Through seven games, Richards had five goals and nine points and was plus-4 while Carter had four goals, five points and was plus-6.

After disastrous sophomore seasons, it is safe to conclude they are back.
