Bolts May Shutdown Smith

from Lightning Strikes,
Tocchet said it is getting closer to a time the team must decide whether to shut down goaltender Mike Smith (concussion). Tocchet said the discussion likely will happen sooner rather than later. At issue: is it worth the risk to bring Smith back considering Tampa Bay is out of the playoff race, or is it better to let him fully heal and be ready for next season? Also a consideration: it might be good for Smith to get a few games under his belt heading into the offseason to get things moving in the right direction. It is a difficult equation.

Mike Smith Suffering Post-Concussion Syndrome
by Paul on 02/09/09 at 05:54 PM ET

TAMPA BAY – Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Mike Smith is suffering from post-concussion syndrome but is expected to return to the ice within the next week. The original injury dates back several weeks, although Smith started to be concerned about symptoms after the team’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 30.
“We were hopeful that Mike’s symptoms would clear sooner and they haven’t, so were taking a conservative approach with him making sure he is 100 percent before he returns to the ice,” Lightning Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian Lawton said. “Although Mike would prefer to be skating and playing right now the appropriate course of action is to err on the safe side.”

Bolts Goalie Smith Not Traveling With Team

via Lightning Strikes,
The last we saw of Lightning goalie Mike Smith he was smashing a water bottle and overturning carts in the hallway leading to the locker room after he was pulled from Friday’s loss to the Flyers. It is unknown if that had any affect on Monday’s announcement Smith will not fly with the team for Tuesday’s game against the Islanders. Mike McKenna, signed Monday to an NHL contract, and Karri Ramo will be the goaltending duo.
added 6:35pm, via Bolts Report,
The team did not reveal until well after practice today that Mike Smith was injured and is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. I tried to cram that information into the previous post.
Smith did not travel with the team today as he went to seek either some medical testing or a therapy of some type, according to general manager Brian Lawton, who did not rule out Smith joining the team in New York before tomorrow’s game and Rick Tocchet has not ruled anything out at this point.

What A Save - Not

from Lightning Strikes,
The only rule applicable to what occurred in Thursday night’s game is 26-4, which states that a goal will be awarded when, during a penalty shot, a shot is disrupted by a deliberately thrown stick. That is what the officials had to determine. They obviously determined Lightning goaltender Mike Smith threw his stick on Milan Hejduk’s shootout attempt. That gave the Avalanche a 1-0 win in the shootout and a 2-1 win in the game.

from Adrian Dater of All Thing Avs,
I think it was a bad call, that Smith just dropped his stick after making a kinda-sorta save on Hedgie’s initial attempt.

Renney Calls For Smith Suspsension

from Stan Fischler of Game On,
Also feeling his oats was Aaron Voros who battled Ryan Malone in another excellent toe-to-toe bout in the first period and later traded punches with Tampa’s belligerent goalie Mike Smith at 18:19 of the third. Voros also took an ankle chop from Smitty preceding the bout.
“I think he (Smith) should be suspended for that,” says Renney.

from Mike Brophy of Sportsnet,
Asked what he thinks about the fact many suggested goaltending was one of the big question marks facing the Lightning heading into the 2008-09 season now that his numbers rank among the best among NHL puck-stoppers, Smith smiles.
“Some people are still saying that,” he says with a laugh.
They shouldn’t be.

Ingrid’s Son A Star
by Paul on 07/26/08 at 07:56 AM ET

from the Kingston Whig-Standard,
The youngster referred to the goalie as a “famous Canadian,” which might be a stretch but not in the north country. In this neck of the woods, Smith is a bona fide star, a local puckster who learned his trade in the shivering confines of the nearby tin-walled shinny barn in Piccadilly and now performs in grand arenas of North America, with and against the finest players on the planet.
Make no mistake, these are indeed heady days for Ron and Ingrid’s strapping son, the 161st player drafted in the 2001 NHL draft. Traded from the Dallas Stars to the Tampa Bay Lightning midway through last season, Smith recently inked a two-year, $4.4-million contract extension. More importantly, he now has an opportunity to become a No. 1 goaltender, something he would not have had in Texas as long as good friend and all-star netminder Marty Turco was turning aside pucks.
“It goes without saying that Mike has a bright future in the Lightning organization,” said the team’s vice-president of hockey operations, Brian Lawton.

Smith Goes To Camp With #1 Tag

from Lightning Strikes,
So much for the idea the Lightning lacked confidence in goaltender Mike Smith. Brian Lawton, the team’s vice president of hockey operations said Monday that the No. 1 job “is Mike’s job to lose,” and that the two-year, $4.4-million contract extension was a way “to instill some confidence in him. ... We wanted to eliminate any doubt where we stand. We are behind him 1,000 percent.”

Tales of Free Agency
by Alanah McGinley on 06/03/08 at 01:55 PM ET

From Mike Smith at The Hockey News,
The new CBA has been successful in creating, while not in excess, a healthy supply of free agents. The growing number of “Powerball lottery” contracts for players entering restricted free agency for the first time results in older players, either free agents or those making too much money, being more readily available.
The art is to pick the right ones, the ones who want to play and play well, not just be paid well. All managers make judgment errors signing players; the good ones make fewer.
I have had different free agent signing experiences as a manager. While in Winnipeg, we did not place much, if any, emphasis on free agents. To put it simply, Winnipeg had no money to spend on the older free agent.

Smith Out For Lightning

from Lightning Strikes,
We won’t find out until tonight, when Lightning goaltender Mike Smith will see the doctor, but consider that the team is calling up Jonathan Boutin from AHL Norfolk to be the backup to Karri Ramo for tonight’s game against the Panthers and is putting Marc Denis on 24-hour re-call waivers so they can get him in here.
Smith was hurt during a breakaway drill at the end of Monday’s practice when Marty St. Louis fell over him. He was in enough pain to be down on the floor of the locker room in full gear while his left knee was being looked at by trainer Tommy Mulligan.

A Squabble in Dallas

From Mike Heika’s blog at the Dallas Morning News,
Jeff Halpern is responsible for Mike Smith’s injury, but the Stars said it was not a fight. Halpern and Smith were playing ``the rebound game’’ after practice when the two started to get very competitive. Halpern then (they say) accidentally slashed Smith while going for a puck that was in the air. That led to a verbal confrontation which was very heated. I was in the locker room, so I didn’t see it.
Smith is listed as day to day, but the plan is for Turco to take the next four games. With the way the games are scheduled after that, Turco could actually play every game for the rest of October. A lot will depend upon how well he plays and how hurt Smith is.
And from the Stars, this announcement:
Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today that the club has activated center Mike Ribeiro from the injured reserve list and placed goaltender Mike Smith on injured reserve, retro-active to October 9.
