Let’s Re-Examine The Grabovski Hit On Markov
by Paul on 04/07/09 at 09:37 AM ET

via Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
Canadiens defenceman Mike Komisarek yesterday ripped into Grabovski for his actions, insinuating Grabovski is a coward.
“You are enraged and you are pissed off that a player like that, when the game is out of hand, runs one of your top players like that,” Komisarek told reporters in Montreal. “He knows (Markov) is in a vulnerable position. There’s no need for that.
“Early on in the game, there was a scrum and Grabovski wouldn’t even look you in the eye. (He) runs away from any confrontation with his tail between his legs. So for him to hit Markie like that, it’s something you don’t like to see.”
The hit in question came in the third period of the Habs’ lopsided 6-2 victory over the Leafs at the Air Canada Centre Saturday. While the check itself did not seem dirty, it did come late, something the Canadiens immediately took notice of.
When I first posted this topic a few days ago, the majority of KK readers thought it was a clean hit. Has anything changed since?

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
Don’t expect Mikhail Grabovski and Jason Blake to exchange Christmas cards any time soon.
For the second time in a month, the two players were involved in an altercation, this time during the Maple Leafs practice at the St. Pete Times Forum yesterday afternoon.
The incident occurred when Grabovski hit Blake from behind during a drill, leading to a scrum that included veteran Jamal Mayers.
A couple of minutes later, Blake skated over to Grabovski and began chirping, causing Tomas Kaberle to come in and calm Blake down.

Grabovski vs The Kostitsyn Brothers
by Alanah McGinley on 02/05/09 at 01:34 PM ET

From the CP via TSN:
The reason for the rivalry remains unknown, however team mates on both sides believe it has something to do with sharing the same nationality. Older brother Andrei [Kostitsyn] would not discuss the feud but did state that [Mikhail] Grabovski “…talks too much in the Russian newspapers about me and my brother.”
While both players were born in Belarussia, Grabovski believes that Kostitsyn’s heritage should be questioned. “I think he is not Belarussian now, he is French because I never fight with Belarussian guys.”
Canadiens heavyweight Georges Laraque thought the prospect of the two flyweights throwing down would be hilarious.
“I think it would look really funny,” Laraque said of the potential tilt between the pair who are both generously listed at 5’11”.

Grabovski vs. Kostitsyn

from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,
The 24-year-old Belarus-raised native of Potsdam, East Germany, was suspended an automatic three games yesterday by the NHL for abuse of an official. Grabovski tussled with linesman Scott Cherrey in his overzealous effort to get at Canadiens’ Sergei Kostitsyn.
The players never managed to dance, despite their best efforts, and both were handed misconducts for their vigorous efforts. Grabovski was given a game misconduct as a bonus.
There is bad blood between these two, litres of it. Apparently it has to do with Kostitsyn’s distaste for things Grabovski is alleged to have said about himself and his brother, Andrei, to Russia’s sensation-seeking sports media.
(Ask Alex Kovalev about that.) But a feud needn’t be based on anything, of course, and it seems that before theirs is done, these two are bound to change their names to Hatfield and McCoy.
