from Russia Today,
Two players from the Pittsburg Penguins, who took the Stanley Cup last week in a dramatic seven-game thriller against Detroit, may leave the U.S. for KHL this summer, Sportbox.ru reports.
Metallurg Magnitogorsk is interested in Czech Petr Sykora, who played 76 games for the Pens this season, scoring 25 goals and 21 assists.
The club’s contract with the player has expired and, according to his agent, the team is not going to offer him a new agreement....
Another Stanley Cup winner, Miroslav Satan, is wanted in Kazakhstan by Barys hockey club. The Astana team has ready offered a two year contract worth $6 million to the Slovak player.

Will Satan Help Pittsburgh Forget Hossa
by Paul on 10/04/08 at 07:48 AM ET

from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal,
“Pittsburgh was smart to pick up Miro Satan because he’s a more complete player than Marian Hossa,” Adler says. “Hossa is a scorer, but so is Satan, except Satan knows even how to backcheck, AND he’ll know how to get Crosby into scoring positions and get the puck to him.
“Satan slowed down at the Island last season (just 16 goals in 80 games), but that doesn’t mean he he hasn’t got it any longer ... The Islanders stunk last season, that’s all.”
So two veteran hockey observers think Satan can do it. I’m not so sure, and I’ll get into that in a moment. It’s worth noting now, though, that Satan has defied negative expectations in the past.

Satan Hopes Penguins Style Of Play Is A Fit

from Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
“Hopefully, I can fulfill everybody’s expectations,” Satan said yesterday as the team was finishing up its preseason physicals and medical tests.
Those expectations run fairly high for Satan, who signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract as a free agent over the summer.
For one thing, Satan is penciled in as the replacement for Marian Hossa, who signed with Detroit. That makes him the top candidate to be the new right winger for captain and top-line center Sidney Crosby. Coach Michel Therrien has said Satan will see time on that line.

Miroslav Satan’s Career Timing
by Alanah McGinley on 11/09/07 at 08:33 PM ET

From Mark Herrmann at Newsday,
Timing is crucial for a big goal-scorer such as Miroslav Satan, who was just where he needed to be when he needed to be there in each of the Islanders’ past two games. His timing has been good ever since he grew up at just the right moment to be a hockey player in Slovakia.
As a boy in what was then Czechoslovakia, he never pictured himself in the National Hockey League because he barely knew there was such a thing.
“There wasn’t a lot of information before ‘89. After all the changes in Russia and Eastern Europe and the fall of the Berlin Wall, basically, the information stream opened up,” he said at Islanders practice Friday, the 18th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
