Winter Classic - Tune-In

added 11:48am, Thanks to a heads-up from a KK member, you can now watch the video here.

I happened to catch the video last night and was very impressed with it, hopefully it will draw some attention to the game on 1/1/09!  I did try to find it on the web, but no luck so far.

NEW YORK (December 1, 2008) – The National Hockey League (NHL), in collaboration with NBC, CBC and RDS, has released a new tune-in marketing campaign to promote the upcoming NHL Winter Classic™ 2009 game on New Year’s Day at Wrigley Field. The TV spot, backed by the singing of the late, legendary baseball broadcaster Harry Caray and his iconic version of “Take Me Out To the Ball Game,” debuted Sunday in the U.S. on the “NBC Sunday Night Football Game” between the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings. NBC’s Bob Costas narrates the U.S. version. This marks the first time that the League and its rights-holders have worked together to create a universal campaign for a single event.

Is NBC Beating CBC in Hockey Coverage?

From James Deacon at AOL Sports Canada,

The unthinkable has happened.

Hockey Night in Canada, the absolute gold standard in hockey broadcasting for generations, is being matched - and in some aspects beaten - in its coverage of the Stanley Cup Finals.

By NBC, no less. An American network.

It’s sacrilege to even suggest such a thing. Hockey fans expect HNIC to be the best because, well, it always has been.

NBC Dropped the Ball

From Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy,

The biggest disappointments in Game 4 ... well, I was going to say it was the strange lack of fire from the Penguins during stretches; but in reality, and without a doubt, they were found in NBC’s broadcast.

While it was nice the telecast acknowledged the tragedy, failing to show the moment of silence before the game in honor of Luc Bourdon was a disgrace and showed a massive misunderstanding of NBC’s hockey audience. The death of an NHL player is a rather atypical occurrence; a moment of silence before a Stanley Cup finals game for a fallen peer is extraordinary. It was a newsworthy moment, and NBC dropped the ball.

and more thoughts on game #4

NBC Excellence

From Jason Kay at The Hockey News,

Besides, the NBC telecasts are excellent. I love the element Pierre McGuire provides between the benches, delivering heat-of-the moment interviews and the occasional report on trash talk.

When Tomas Holmstrom was injured late in Game 3 after being dumped by Hal Gill, McGuire told us one of the Penguins skated by the bench (Tyler Kennedy if memory serves correctly) and said in a disbelieving tone to the combative Swede, “That hurt you?”

That was followed by another Penguin telling Wings forward Kirk Maltby it was time he retired.

It wasn’t earth-shattering, but it’s the kind of inside-the-game feel you don’t get anywhere else.

NBC Affiliate In Detroit- Wake Up

With about 1:45 left in the 3rd period of last night’s game, the NBC affiliate, WDIV in Detroit, decided to switch from HD to SD and insert their post game graphics in the pillars of the picture.

They have done this before, whenever they had a local post game show and I have not brought it up.  But this is the SCF and this should not be tolerated by any HD viewer in the Detroit market.

WDIV, think before you do this again on Saturday.  Let us have the HD picture for the full game!

The Hype Machine is Coming

From Michael Farber at SI.com’s Rinkside Blog,

The sound you heard after Detroit’s ditto 3-0 victory Monday was all the people clicking off their Versus telecast of the game, at least by folks who can find the NHL’s subterranean cable partner. NBC picks up the Stanley Cup final with Game 3, which looks like the network is getting the rights to air Titanic but only after the ship is halfway submerged. Still, The Peacock will be cranking up the hype machine at any moment:

“See Sidney Crosby, the future of the NHL, as he tries to escape the straitjacket of the Detroit Red Wings! Harry Houdini did it. Why not Sid? Can the Penguins win a game? Can the Penguins score a goal? See it live on NBC, Wednesday at 8 p.m.”

Of course, there have been soporific starts to recent Stanley Cup finals, including a pair of 3-0 shutouts in the opening two games of the 2003 match between Anaheim and New Jersey when apparently the Mighty Ducks were not informed the final had actually begun. The Ducks rallied at home and indeed the series dragged on for seven games, but the difference was these were not terribly appealing teams that operated in smaller markets.

and more on the Pens/Wings series thus far

Update 1:30pm ET: Darren Eliot, also at SI’s Rinkside Blog, writes on what Pittsburgh must do now to turn the series around.

Watching Dallas

from the Dallas Morning News,

The D-FW market has averaged a 1.8 rating for the Red Wings series in the wake of the Stars’ march through Anaheim and San Jose. That translates to 43,841 homes. That’s worse than awful....

Now let’s compare. In Detroit, where some homes have access to the Canadian broadcasts, the series has averaged a relatively healthy 9.6 rating (184,848 homes) on Versus.

And in the Eastern Conference home markets, Philadelphia is averaging an 8.3 (244,020 homes). In Pittsburgh, which should be known as Hockeytown USA, the Penguins-Flyers series is averaging a 20.2 rating (233,956 homes) on Versus.

read on and some additional information regarding the OT plans of NBC for the Stars/Wings game on Saturday.  Do remember the times listed are CT.

NHL & NBC Announce Extended Partnership

from NHL.com,

NEW YORK – NBC Sports and the National Hockey League today announced that they have extended their partnership through the 2008-09 season with NBC exercising its option on the NHL. The joint announcement was made today by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal Sports & Olympics.

“We’re thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with the NHL,” said Ebersol. “There have been positive signs for the league, both on and off the ice. Ratings were up this year; the Winter Classic in Buffalo was a huge success; advertising sales were healthy; and the product on the ice has never been better, led by young, marketable stars such as Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. We believe this is a sport that will continue to grow.”

Bettman said, “This is great news for the NHL and its fans.  NBC has been a great partner and its innovations to the broadcasts have helped bring fans inside the game like never before.”

Two Year Deal Expected With The NHL & NBC

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,

The NHL is a few days away from announcing a two-year contract extension with NBC that will keep hockey broadcasts on the network through 2009-10.

The second year of the extension would allow NBC to market its 2010 Olympic hockey coverage by airing NHL games in January leading up to the February tournament.

NBC’s ratings have been up and down. The high point was the Jan. 1 outdoor game at Buffalo, which earned a 2.2 national rating (percentage of U.S. households tuned in).

Pierre McGuire Talks to KK

Earlier today, Pierre McGuire of NBC and TSN was good enough to share his hockey observations with Paul and myself.  We asked him about the upcoming Philadelphia/Pittsburgh game this Sunday at noon EDT on NBC, got some gossip about what goes on “Between the Glass”, and insights into both the Western and Eastern conferences going into the playoffs.

You can download the interview by this mp3 file here, or listen on the player below.

KK LiveChat Game of the Week

With the new chat rooms opening up this week, I felt it would be cool if we had sort of a weekly “Hockey Gathering”.  Where there’s pretty much 1 important game going on at the time, the numerous and widespread KK readership could just talk intelligently (hopefully) about the game and the sport in general.  So I thought long and hard on a cool title, and came up with “The KK LiveChat Game of the Week”.  Please, feel free to suggest a better one.

Anyway, we’re going to start with tomorrow’s Bruins-Rangers game on NBC, and will continue with the All-Star Game next week.

It doesn’t look as if there’ll be any pre-game tomorrow, so make sure to be in the KK Hockey Chat Room Sunday at 12:15 ET for some lively hockey discussion!

NBC Gets Burned with NFL Championship Games

Do you hear that sound, that faint beeping noise that sounds like a heart monitor at a hospital?  The pulse was flowing pretty steady, but now it’s basically in that last moment between life and death?  That’s the buzz that NBC had gotten for it’s coverage of the NHL’s Winter Classic, and it’s dying.  Fast.  And the NFL is to blame.

image

*thanks to a KK member for pointing this out in the KK Forum

added 8:42pm, I emailed NBC earlier asking them about the site, and received no response.  I have heard they may be going another route with the site, but without an answer, it is a question that remains unanswered.
