Shanahan Stuck On Zero Goals
by Paul on 10/16/07 at 07:27 AM ET
Comments (0)
from the NY Post,
So far, Brendan Shanahan’s season has been a microcosm of the Rangers’. Through five games, Shanahan has 32 shots on goal - including 13 against the defending Eastern Conference champion Senators on Saturday. Yet, he still finds himself with zero goals and his team tied for last place the Atlantic Division.
The 20-year veteran knows it’s still early, and he’s not letting the slow start get to him.
“There’s a difference between a sense of urgency and panicking,” Shanahan said yesterday. “This team is not panicking.”

League Files Injunction Against Rangers Lawsuit
by Paul on 10/16/07 at 06:57 AM ET

from the LA Times,
...The NHL on Friday filed an initial response that asks a federal court in New York to reject Madison Square Garden’s demand for a preliminary injunction that would keep the league from taking over the Rangers’ website—and stop the league from imposing a $100,000-per-day fine. The filing also linked the lawsuit to “the sour grapes of one disgruntled NHL team owner.”
The league filing included supporting statements from Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, Minnesota Wild Chairman Bob Naegele and Pittsburgh Penguins Chief Executive Ken Sawyer—all supporters of the league’s new media plan.

Rangers Need Goals

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Through five games, the Blueshirts’ best players have been: 1. Henrik Lundqvist; 2. Fedor Tyutin; 3. Dan Girardi. In his role, the best forward has been Blair Betts. Uh oh.
In other words, is there any wonder why the Star Spangled Blueshirts have scored all of seven even-strength goals (and 10 overall) in a 2-3-0 getaway?

Scatchard Likely To Sign With Rangers
by Paul on 10/12/07 at 08:34 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
If Sean Avery hadn’t gone down with a sprained left shoulder, chances are pretty good Dave Scatchard would not have skated with the Rangers as he did yesterday on the first day of a tryout, and as he is likely to do regularly before too long as the club’s third-line center.
From the summer moment the Rangers sent Matt Cullen back to Carolina, it was all but inevitable Tom Renney would seek a veteran replacement to skate between young snipers Petr Prucha and Ryan Callahan, regardless of how good rookie applicants Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov looked in training camp.

from Stan Fischler of MSG Network,
What’s with the Blueshirts?
Perhaps the most telling observation was uttered by Tom Renney BEFORE the match when he talked of “minor anxieties” on his outfit from which so much is being expected.
Forget about “minor anxieties” and today it’s time to ratchet it up a notch to “MINOR anxieties.”
You know what comes after that, don’t you?

Jovo To Rangers Doesn’t Make Sense

from The Blueshirts Blog at the Daily News,
Do not, under any circumstances, consider this a precedent. Because I have no intention of spending time and space on this blog shooting down ridiculous rumors—I already have a full-time job, thank you.
But as so many of you have asked about “reports” that Ed Jovanovski is headed to the Rangers, I’ll make an exception.
This makes no sense on so many different levels it’s difficult to know where to start. But let’s start with some simple math:

Slow Starting Rangers

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
It isn’t only Scott Gomez, who appears to have fallen immediate victim to the well known Stephane Quintal Disease, named for the defenseman who lost his game on Broadway by trying to do way too much in order to justify his (comparatively) massive free-agent contract. It isn’t just Jaromir Jagr, who has looked in need of a GPS navigation system on the ice. It isn’t just Brendan Shanahan, whose start to the season has stalled shifting gears.

Rangers May Have Advantage In Lawsuit Against The NHL
by Paul on 10/07/07 at 09:13 AM ET

from Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star,
The Rangers, who want the right to control their own website instead of adopting the league’s “homogenized ... cookie cutter” model, argue the addition of Drury and Gomez have “made the Rangers a strong contender ... creating enormous opportunities to increase traffic to the Rangers website, as well as to use the Rangers website to cultivate fan excitement, attract new fans, and enhance the Rangers business.”
The Rangers surely won’t need to draw on their new high-priced forwards in court. It looks like history may be on their side.

Rangers Need To Strengthen Defensive Corp

from Tom Gulitti of the Record,
The more I think about it, however, the more I believe that the Rangers don’t have enough to win the Cup. The additions of Gomez and Drury clearly make them a better team up the middle. The Blueshirts did nothing, though, to address their biggest weakness, which is their defense.
The hope is that rookie Marc Staal will develop enough over the regular season that he’ll be a top four defenseman by the playoffs. That’s a lot to ask of a 20-year-old.

Gomez Now In A Different World
by Paul on 10/04/07 at 08:08 AM ET

from the Anchorage Daily News,
I got trapped by fans, and I basically got an autograph session going,’’ Gomez recalled, punctuating the story with his ever-present laugh. “I looked at my watch and it was 5:25, and I had to get hustling.
“It’s a different world here, man.’‘
But it’s the world Gomez has always craved.
Over most of his first eight years as a pro, he lived and worked and came of age in New Jersey. Continental Arena in East Rutherford is just an eight-mile drive from the Garden, but those rinks and the teams they house are worlds apart in terms of exposure and media buzz.

Shanny Still Has His Shot
by Paul on 10/03/07 at 08:25 PM ET
Comments (0)
from the New York Times,
Entering his 20th season, the 38-year-old Shanahan appears very much his old self. That goal against the Islanders last weekend was vintage Shanahan.
First, he was open. Finding free ice in front of the goal is a skill of its own. When he took the pass, he had already looked at the goalie and knew where he was going to shoot. And the key, he said, was taking the shot before the goalie could adjust to him. The puck flew past the goalie’s glove hand and inside his left post.
“There’s two types of accuracy: there’s high and low, and left and right,” Shanahan said. “The left and right part of the accuracy was good, but the height was poor. It was kind of in the middle, and you either want it down low or up high. But you get away with that stuff if you get the puck away quickly.

Last Year For Sather?

via William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
According to hockey insiders, Glen Sather turned down a five-year contract extension with the New York Rangers during the summer, leading to speculation this will be last season as president and general manager of the club.
NHL watchers would view his departure as the end of era, and also beginning of a new era in which recently retired players such as Mark Messier and Scott Mellanby would begin moving into top management positions.

Someone Not Invited to the Party?
by Alanah McGinley on 10/01/07 at 02:45 PM ET
Comments (0)
Eric Duhatschek at his Globe & Mail blog discusses the various luminaries attending the Esquire party tomorrow night in Manhattan, launching the new NHL season. The guest list includes a number of notables but also features one notable exception, as well.
NHL luminaries for the Esquire party include the commissioner, Gary Bettman, the deputy commissioner, Bill Daly, plus members of the New York Islanders (Bill Guerin, Mike Comrie), the New Jersey Devils (Patrik Elias) and some as yet-to-be-announced members of the Buffalo Sabres. Curiously, there are no New York Rangers’ players listed as possible attendees, even though the Rangers boast two of the NHL’s most attractive free-agent acquisitions, Scott Gomez and Chris Drury, at least one of whom (Gomez) is an unbelievably great talker.
One wonders if the Rangers’ absenteeism is merely an oversight, or has something to do with that curious decision by Madison Square Garden (MSG) to file a lawsuit against the NHL last Friday for violating antitrust laws and acting like an illegal cartel.

Rangers Roster Taking Shape
by Paul on 09/26/07 at 09:30 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Newsday,
Like details of a photograph emerging in a darkroom developing pan, the Opening Day roster for the Rangers became clearer Wednesday.
Based on their performance in camp and preseason games, two prospects seem to have solidified positions: 21-year-old center Brandon Dubinsky, ticketed for the third line, and highly-touted defenseman Marc Staal, who at age 20 seems to have all the instincts and skating ability necessary for the NHL. If the Rangers add just Staal and Dubinsky and keep the roster at 22, not 23, they would squeeze under the $50.3-million salary cap by about $600,000.

Rangers Win - Everyone Is Happy
by Paul on 09/26/07 at 12:44 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Lindsay Berra of ESPN the Magazine,
If relatively anonymous. Drury, carting two gallons of milk out of a bodega on Manhattan’s Upper West Side recently, had to stare at a guy he thought was on HBO’s “Flight of the Conchords” (he wasn’t) before he got a “Hey, you’re the new Ranger!” in return. And Gomez spent an hour in a Starbucks near MSG on a late-summer workday afternoon, drinking his grapefruit soda in total peace. Think that’d happen to Eli Manning or Derek Jeter?
But Gomez and Drury just got into town; give them a season. Next June, the Rangers could be polishing the Stanley Cup, and NHL brass could be glowing about their improved ratings. Then the only unfinished business would be the ticker-tape parade.
much more...

Asked about his status for Friday’s game in the Garden, Avery said, “Oh yeah, I’ll be ready.”

Simon Should Not Have Been On The Ice
by Paul on 09/25/07 at 07:02 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Scott Morrison of CBC Sports,
Where is the common sense?
Simon shouldn’t have been anywhere near the ice against the Rangers for all the obvious reasons. And especially since the Rangers decided to dress Ryan Hollweg, the player Simon chopped down his with his stick back on March 8 to earn the supreme wrath of the league.
Can you say retribution?
But there they were together on the ice Monday night in Long Island and the mayhem was, well, as predictable and it was entirely avoidable. Hollweg and Simon sparred and jabbed with each other.

Renney on Kasparaitis Waiver Decision
by Paul on 09/24/07 at 07:11 PM ET

from the Rangers Report,
“We’re trying to help him,” Renney said. “I don’t see Kaspar playing hockey for us, and we’ll do everything we can to help him play somewhere else. And if not, he’ll go to Hartford, and in the kind of condition he’s in, and the mental approach he’s taken, you never know.”
I asked Renney if he still thought Kasparaitis could play at the NHL level, and the coach said he believed he could. Bear in mind it’s in the Rangers’ best interest to have another team pick him up off waivers, so it wouldn’t make sense for the coach to elaborate on all of Kasparaitis’ deficiencies. But the answer merits passing on.

The Fab Five of the 2007-08 Season
by Alanah McGinley on 09/24/07 at 03:58 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Pierre LeBrun at the CP via Yahoo!
The Ducks may be in flux but they are still mighty. The Sharks smell blood, the Red Wings will soar, the Senators sense destiny and the Rangers plan to rock Broadway again.
Those are the Fab Five as the NHL’s 90th season opens this weekend in London, England, with Anaheim opening defence of its title against rival Los Angeles.
The Ducks romped so impressively to California’s first Stanley Cup last June that giving the NHL its first repeat champion in a decade seemed like a sensible proposition. That’s before superstar defenceman Scott Niedermayer and 48-goal scorer Teemu Selanne started talking about retirement.
note: an earlier LeBrun story is noted here, for more on the London game.

Can Rangers Live-Up To The Hype
by Paul on 09/24/07 at 10:30 AM ET

from E.J. Hradek at ESPN,
As you know, Rangers GM Glen Sather turned a heck of an offseason double play, landing top pivots Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. When any team can add two talented centers with championship pedigree, I have to think they’ll be better—maybe, a lot better….
The Rangers certainly figure to better their 94-point total of last season. The expectations will be skyscraper high, though. If they don’t fall victim to the hype, they could make it a longer spring for hockey fans in New York.

Rangers Trying To Mesh
by Paul on 09/23/07 at 07:25 AM ET
Comments (0)
from the NY Post,
It’s way too early, but it has already started. Even Tom Renney jumped in, breaking them up briefly. In their first exhibition game together, Scott Gomez and Jaromir Jagr did nothing to dismiss the idea that one puck isn’t enough for the two of them….
Meshing players whose game depends first on skill is always more difficult than throwing together a line of diggers, grinders and hard-drivers, and Jagr and Gomez are still looking for an intuitive understanding even in practice. Those who play with Gomez must learn that the puck is coming when they least expect it.

“If people had heard I didn’t wear shoulder pads beforehand, now they know I don’t,” said a slightly less-imposing Brendan Shanahan, who for the record, wears slight pads on his shoulders.
“Man, I look tiny,” Sean Avery said.

“I look sexy,” he said.

Jason Strudwick Brings More Than Play On Ice
by Paul on 09/20/07 at 06:47 AM ET
Comments (0)
from the Journal News,
...But if there is a reason the 6-foot-4 Strudwick finds himself on the team’s opening-night roster, it is because they do not have another player who so easily unites a dressing room.
It is an odd notion to think a player can crack a roster at the highest level of professional sports on the strength of his personality. But that may be the case with Strudwick, a tough, versatile player who others say has an inherent knack for bringing a team together.
“He knows how important it is to cross all boundaries, whether they’re geographic or ethnic or whatever,” Rangers coach Tom Renney said. “For Jason, it’s just so natural, and because of that people trust his judgment and they like him a lot. They feel regardless of what his participation might be on the ice, he serves a huge advantage everywhere else.”

The Prospects for Rangers Prospects
by Alanah McGinley on 09/19/07 at 11:40 AM ET

From Larry Brooks at the NY Post,
The Rangers may have an impressive group of prospects within the organization, but there’s a good chance that not a single one of them will be on the roster for the Oct. 4 NHL opener at the Garden against Florida.
How different would that scenario appear, and how more powerful would the Rangers be, had management been keener with its three first-round picks in 2003 and 2004 Entry Drafts that yielded three players who so far have not played in a single NHL game among them, and who probably won’t for at least a while?

Who Should Backup Lundqvist

Comments (0)
fro Stan Fischler of MSG Network,
My equation goes like this.
Pencil Lundqvist in for 66 games and allow the remaining 16 for Stevie.
Should, Valiquette fail, Glen Sather has an option or three: 1) Curtis Joseph; 2. Robert Esche; 3. Make a deal for Scott Clemmensen.
* CONCLUSION: Valiquette will do the job, and not because he’s my friend. I like Montoya, too, but more than anything, Al needs experience more than my friendship.

Kasparaitis On The Comeback Trail
by Paul on 09/16/07 at 05:56 AM ET
Comments (0)
from the New York Times,
Last March, Kasparaitis hit what he called rock bottom. At midseason, he had been banished to the Rangers’ top farm team, the Hartford WolfPack. He had arrived for training camp out of shape after off-season operations and was replaced on the Rangers’ roster by younger players. A 14-year N.H.L. defenseman, Kasparaitis was also going through a painful divorce and said he felt as if he were losing everything.
After a practice in Hartford, he had what he now describes as a panic attack. It alarmed team doctors enough that he was rushed by ambulance to a hospital, where doctors found nothing physically wrong.
“It was emotional, the divorce and injuries and I don’t know, I was just tired from all the pressure in life,” he said. “Then I had the panic attack in Hartford after the practice.”
