Is Lidstrom One Of The Top 20 All-Time NHL Greats?
by Paul on 10/17/09 at 11:19 AM ET
Comments (10)
from Sam McCaig of The Hockey News,
So, maybe it’s time to rewrite history a bit and find a spot for Lidstrom among the game’s all-time greats. At least, let’s see where the smooth Swedish blueliner fits among the best rearguards the NHL has ever seen....
Bobby Orr ranked No. 2 in The Top 100 behind Wayne Gretzky and Orr forerunner Doug Harvey was next (among D-men) at No. 6.
Orr (eight) and Harvey (seven) are the only two rearguards to win more Norris Trophies than Lidstrom. And while it’s nigh on impossible to truly compare players from such drastically different eras, it would be difficult to argue that Lidstrom has had a similar impact on the way the game is played as did those two revolutionary defensemen…
And, as the best blueliner the league has seen in the past 20 years, the Red Wings great deserves to be slotted somewhere in the No. 15-20 range, among the very best NHLers of all-time.

Another Example Why Lidstrom Is The ‘Perfect Human’
by Paul on 10/16/09 at 08:19 AM ET

via Craig Custance of the Sporting News,
I was talking to Los Angeles captain Dustin Brown before the game, and asked him about the Calgary Flames defense, one that I consider the best in the league (or at least I did until that Chicago meltdown). Brown made an interesting comment.
“For me, Calgary’s defense - I don’t mind as much as a Nick Lidstrom,” Brown told SportingNews.com. “A physical confrontation is okay, if I have to chase the puck all night, that’s when it gets frustrating.”
It’s not as flashy is a big Dion Phaneuf hit, but Lidstrom can drive opponents crazy by making them chase the puck all night.
“He can,” Brown said. “He’s good with his stick. He’s incredibly smart on the ice and that’s tough to play against.”

Lidstrom Joins An Elite Group

Nicklas Lidstrom with 2 assists tonight becomes just the fourth player in team history to record 1,000 points in a Red Wings sweater:
1. Gordie Howe - 1,809 (786g-1023a)
2. Steve Yzerman - 1,755 (692g, 1063a)
3. Alex Delvecchio - 1,281 (456g, 825a)
4. Nicklas Lidstrom - 1,000 (229g-771a)
Nick also became the second Swede (Mats Sundin) to join the 1000 point club in the NHL.
added 10:24pm, Forgot to add this, but the Wings TV crew mentioned Nick was the fastest (games played) to reach the 1000 point mark for the Wings.
udate: If you read the comments here, the TV crew corrected their mistake regarding Nick being the fastest to 1000 points. That makes much more sense.

Lidstrom Selected Sporting News Player Of The Decade
by Paul on 09/24/09 at 06:52 AM ET

from Craig Custance & Steve Greenberg of the Sporting News,
Lidstrom is an anomaly—the first European-born player to win a Conn Smythe ( 2002) and the only one to captain a Stanley Cup champion (’08). But the Swedish defenseman’s accomplishments cannot be trivialized. Twice in this decade—from 2001-03 and 2006-08—the 17-year veteran has three-peated as the winner of the Norris Trophy. In a word: ridiculous.

There’s balls and then there’s balls.
Chutzpa versus cojones.
Exhibit A: Jim Balsillie; Exhibit B: Nicklas Lidstrom.
Both have taken it in the groin – one off the ice, from the courts; the other on the ice, from a hockey stick. You are invited to take the measure of each man.
We’ll start with the player, Detroit’s inestimable captain, a ferocious warrior who, despite gallant effort, was unable to capture a second straight Stanley Cup triumph for the Motor City.
How gallant?

Writer Wars

from Damien Cox of The Spin at the Toronto Star,
Today, we are treated to a diatribe about how all the “embedded” reporters at the Stanley Cup final - none actually named - were hiding the true nature of Detroit defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom’s injury, and that it took the courage for this intrepid Globe and Mail writer to break the news (from Calgary, apparently) that Lidstrom had suffered a testicle injury when he was slashed or speared.
It was suggested that reporters - again, all unnamed - were “complicit” with the NHL’s secrecy policy on such injuries, which is about as insulting to a journalist as you can get.
Well, I’ll leave the Globe writer to sort out the insults with his colleagues at his paper - some of whom are among the best in the business - but who he apparently believes are in cahoots with the NHL. But just for his information, Lidstrom’s precise injury was reported by The Star last week.

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,
...And when Lidstrom appeared tired and mistake-prone in the Final against Pittsburgh, questions were raised again about his fitness to play. Was it an ankle? A knee? Under the NHL’s Orwellian injury disclosure policy, a postal-code approximation of the hurt was all that was given to the media.
Actually, Lidstrom had a damaged testicle from being pitch-forked by Chicago’s Patrick Sharp in Game 3 of the Western final. He needed all the time between the cheap shot and Game One of the final to rehabthe injury. As Paul Harvey used to say, “Now you know the rest of the story”.
While it’s considerate to Lidstrom that such an . . . er, intimate injury be hushed up, the cover-up damages the league’s credibility in several ways.

The Evolution Of Nick Lidstrom

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,
“The first time I ever met Lidstrom what I remember is how quiet he was,” said Draper, who has played with him since 1993. “I’ve been very fortunate to see the evolution of Nick Lidstrom first hand.”
Maltby recalls that he was surprised the first time he heard Lidstrom speaking Swedish.
“He doesn’t even really have an accent, so the first time he started speaking Swedish, I said, ‘What the ... Oh, I forgot about that,’. “ Maltby said, laughing. “It was funny. ... You almost took it for granted he was North American. He’s the same way now. He’s quiet and he goes about his business.”
Although he was a coach’s dream as a defender early in his career, his quiet demeanor, coupled with Detroit’s high-profile dressing room, stunted his national attention. “For a while, he was the best-kept secret in the league,” Draper said.
With six Norris trophies, Lidstrom now has the best defensive credentials in the game.

Q. Can I ask you about home ice advantage in this series? The home team has obviously won all the games. Are match?ups that critical in this series, how big a part of the results that we’ve seen is that?
NICKLAS LIDSTROM: I don’t think match-ups has been the big issue. I think the team that has had home ice advantage has played really well at home. They’ve gained a lot of momentum from the crowd or what not. So I think just that in itself has helped the home team playing on their home ice.
I think match-ups in Games 3 and 4 wasn’t that big of an issue for us. Only a couple of times we didn’t have the match-up that we wanted when we started the shift. But otherwise we did a good job coming on and off the ice.

Q. What about offense for like some of the guys, maybe a little bit yourself. I know Game 4 has been good for you. Tomas is struggling. How do you try to get your offense going so you don’t have to worry as much about their offense?
MARIAN HOSSA: We have to step up, and you know, get it going offensively. Help this team score some goals and put them ?? instead of coming back, the last two games. So, you know, we have to be better offensively, and we have to step up.
Q. What did you think happened in that six-minute stretch when they got the three goals?
MARIAN HOSSA: That was momentum changing. You know, they scored the shorthand goal, and that kind of gave them momentum, especially in their building. And they also got the jump. And after they got another one from our mistakes.
But, you know, we are back to basically a 0-0 situation, and now, you know, it’s the best of three, and we have to make sure we play strong games at home.

Fourteen-year-old Nick Kaufman likes fast cars, but he also is a fan of elite, mobile defensemen, one in particular.
So Kaufman, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, chose to meet his hockey idol, Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom, instead of a trip to Italy to tour the Ferrari plant.
“He’s my favorite player,” Kaufman said. “I’ve been a Red Wings fan for six years.”
Kaufman, from Maple Grove, Minn., skated with Lidstrom after practice Saturday at Joe Louis Arena and took some shots on Ty Conklin. Afterward, he sat next to Lidstrom in the dressing room while his parents snapped pictures.

The Power Of Lidstrom
by Paul on 03/22/09 at 10:50 AM ET

from Bruce MacLeod of the Macomb Daily,
The Red Wings’ success with Lidstrom is one of the best runs in league history.
If you do a quickie study of the won-lost record of NHL teams with individual players — estimating won-lost record using individual games played and leveling all seasons to 82 games — Lidstrom ranks third all-time in team wins over losses. In fact, the Red Wings have won approximately 402 more games than they’ve lost since Lidstrom joined the club.
That puts Lidstrom in the midst of 11 former Montreal Canadiens in the top 13 all-time in this statistic. First is Larry Robinson followed by Henri Richard. Then comes Lidstrom followed by Bob Gainey, Serge Savard, Yvon Cournoyer and Jacques Lemaire.

Hey, How About This Guy For The Norris?
by Paul on 02/22/09 at 10:42 AM ET

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal via Faceoff.com,
I’m not sure why people are writing off Detroit’s Nick Lidstrom for his seventh Norris Trophy. Don’t you have to knock off the champ?
Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara is getting lots of play in Boston, but he’s got 34 points and is plus-24. Lidstrom has 43 points and is also plus-24. Capitals defenceman Mike Green might actually be the biggest challenger. Green has 51 points and he’s plus-26 in Washington, but Lidstrom has played all year with tendinitis in his elbow, which has cut down his effectiveness.
Here’s everything you should know about him, though. He’s plus-404 in his NHL career. He’s never had a season where he was a minus player. Here’s the top five in history, with most playing in the ‘70s and ‘80s, when there were lots of patsies to beat up on: Larry Robinson (plus-730), Bobby Orr (597), Ray Bourque (528), Wayne Gretzky (518) and Bobby Clarke (506). Orr was plus-124 in 1970-71.

Leave it to Scotty Bowman to break down the forced-sitting of Lidstrom & Datsyuk.
Listen to Scotty who was on the Fan590 in Toronto this morning. Scotty also discusses numerous NHL topics.
Also, from Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen,
Fine them.
Make them go to their room.
Make them each write a 1,000-word essay on why they love the NHL All-Star Game.
But to make Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings miss tonight’s game against the Blue Jackets does more potential harm to the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild than it does to Detroit.
For the sake of propping up an all-star game that is rightly mocked for presenting silly hockey, the NHL is using a sledge hammer to kill a fly.

The Wings said, contrary to reports, there is no appeal process. It’s cut and dry. They will not play tonorrow. Technically, it’s not a suspension, as they will be paid.

Bettman Throws Lidstrom Under The Bus
by Paul on 01/25/09 at 08:48 AM ET

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
• The euphoria over the possible drafting of John Tavares, and what he could do for an NHL team, is overblown. Think about this: Rick Nash and Jay Bouwmeester were the best two players drafted into the NHL in 2002. Six seasons later, neither has been in a playoff game.
• Department of Dumb: Suspending Nicklas Lidstrom, who has played hurt, been to a million all-star games, and never has taken a shift off in his spectacular career, for not playing in today’s all-star game. This is so typical of Gary Bettman: He’ll protect his bankrupt owners but toss the best of his players under the bus.

Why Not Lidstrom For SI Sportsman of the Year
by Paul on 11/19/08 at 02:21 PM ET
Comments (3)
from Kostya Kennedy of Sports Illustrated,
In a parity-stricken league, Lidstrom has ensured that the Red Wings remain in a class of one, and in June he crossed into hockey’s final frontier when he became the first European captain in NHL history to hoist the Stanley Cup. “I’m very proud to be the first,” he said, and in the next breath, “I’m very proud of the whole team too.”
What makes Lidstrom so Sportsman-like is, well, his sportsmanship: his humility, his professionalism. He is intuitive on the ice and equally so in the locker room. Earlier this year Babcock told me that he had never coached player this good. “In what way?” I asked. Replied Babcock: “In any way you can think of.”

Harvey vs. Lidstrom
by Paul on 07/25/08 at 08:01 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Greatest Hockey Legends,
Now, on to Doug’s question. Is Nicklas Lidstrom better than Doug Harvey?
I think history tends to nicely accept that Doug Harvey is the second best defenseman of all time, behind Bobby Orr, of course. In fact, most of the so called experts tend to place Harvey in top ten players of all time, regardless of position....
Doug Harvey was the epitome of hockey grace, and one of the few players in hockey history that could truly take control of a game all by himself.
Now that is awfully hard to compete against. Lidstrom is catching up, with more seasons ahead. He’s got 4 Stanley Cup championships and 6 Norris Trophies. His career offensive numbers dwarf Harvey’s, mind you that is due much to the very different eras each played in. Both are classic and near flawless defenders and both are dominant at both ends of the ice.

Lidstrom Changed The European Thinking

from Michael Farber at Sports Illustrated,
Indeed the most vocal that Lidstrom became during this year’s playoff run was before Game 6 of the Western Conference finals, after Detroit had lost two straight to the Dallas Stars. According to Cleary, Lidstrom said, “O.K., boys, this is going to be a good night for us. Do what we do, boys. Just believe in ourselves, and let’s not be nervous.” The Red Wings won 4-1 to clinch the series. Lidstrom speaks the hockey idiom in an English so lightly accented that veteran fourth-liner Kirk Maltby said he “found it weird” when Tomas Holmstrom joined the team in 1996 and Maltby heard Lidstrom speaking Swedish for the first time.

from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,
One area where Lidstrom excels and which is frequently undervalued is his ability to deftly complete tape-to-tape first passes out of the defensive zone, the move that shifts the attack into gear.
With Lidstrom in the lineup, the club averages 3.2 goals per game. Without him, that percentage dropped to 2.3 tallies a night.
The power play registered six times in 34 opportunities minus Lidstrom, but was good for three goals Sunday, with Lidstrom, armed with one of the league’s deadliest and most accurate point shots, figuring directly in two of the tallies.

He’s been thrown off his routine — which is everything to a hockey player — but at least hasn’t thrown off the family household.

“I don’t know if it goes on for another week if she’ll change her mind, though.”
Despite the injury, Lidstrom may very well remain the odds-on favourite to capture a sixth career Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenceman.

from Bruce MacLeod of Red Wings Corner,
Tonight will be spent as most Red Wings fans will, wondering what tomorrow morning’s MRI would reveal about Nicklas Lidstrom’s ailing right knee. Lidstrom was knocked woozy, Monday in Denver, when Avalanche forward Ian Laperriere ran the Detroit captain hard into the boards. Laperriere’s forearm landed on Lidstrom’s jaw and the defenseman bounced back off the boards.
(That was a dirty hit, by the way. Any time a player gets a forearms up on another player’s jaw and slams him against the boards, it’s dirty. It might have been accidental, but Laperriere sure didn’t act like it was.)

The Lidstrom For MVP Campaign
by Paul on 02/06/08 at 09:17 AM ET
Comments (6)
from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
It’s about quiet brilliance. Being, to knock off the old Johnny Rodgers nickname, an ordinary superstar.
His Red Wings are running away with the NHL regular season, by far the best team in the opening four months with a shot – not a great shot, but still more than a mathematical possibility – at breaking league records for wins and points in a single season.
Lidstrom is the best player on the best team. So shouldn’t an awful lot more people be making an awful lot more noise about Lidstrom winning his first Hart Trophy as league MVP this season?
“I have no idea why Nick Lidstrom hasn’t won a Hart already,” said an exasperated Detroit GM Ken Holland. “I just don’t know what people are watching. I mean, he doesn’t win because why, he’s not a good quote?”
In the last few days there seems to be numerous Lidstrom for MVP stories and I wonder who is behind this talk. It is not like the Wings to promote an individual player, but a few weeks ago on local Detroit radio, Scotty Bowman was asked about Lidstrom. Scotty praised Nick and and said it was up to the media to start the Lidstrom for MVP campaign. Looks like they were listening or Bowman is bending some ears with a few well placed phone calls.

from the Detroit News,
In the middle of presidential campaign season, coach Mike Babcock did some lobbying of his own Monday in the Red Wings locker room.
The candidate Babcock was backing was Nicklas Lidstrom.
from TSN,
Well, you can add another can’t-miss player for the mix, but the here’s the kicker - all 30 NHL teams missed out on him a while ago. His name is Fabian Brunnstrom, and he’s one of the most coveted young players not playing in the National Hockey League.

Simply The Best

from Brian Costello of the Hockey News,
The debate was interesting, but not terribly long when we were determining The Hockey News cover feature for our European issue, due to come out next week.
Nicklas Lidstrom is our cover boy, plain and simple. The best European-trained player ever in the NHL.
A case was made for Jaromir Jagr, the five-time scoring champion and destined to be the top-scoring European for long time to come. Jari Kurri had a lot of support, as did Dominik Hasek. But the more we studied the facts and figures, the more it became obvious.

Nick The Machine

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
The great ones make a hard game look ridiculously easy.
Gretzky. Orr. Mario. Howe. Beliveau. Lafleur.
You can add Nick Lidstrom to that pantheon.
Since Orr retired 31 years ago because his knees gave out, Lidstrom and Ray Bourque have been hockey’s pre-eminent defencemen. Paul Coffey, who had 1500 points, was close. So was Denis Potvin, a mean customer. Chris Chelios, Larry Robinson and Scott Niedermayer have a following as game-managers. But, Lidstrom, who’s remarkably only missed 22 of 1,201 total games (some forced to rest him for the playoffs) is, in his 16th NHL season, a machine.

How Much Longer For Lidstrom
by Paul on 10/04/07 at 05:05 PM ET

from Evan Grossman of NHL.com,
Lidstrom won his fifth Norris Trophy last season as the NHL’s best defenseman, and he’s in the final season of his contract with the Red Wings. But if General Manager Ken Holland has his way, Lidstrom will be back for another decade in Hockeytown, perhaps long enough to equal Bobby Orr’s record of eight Norris Trophies.
“I hope about another 10 years,” Holland said when asked how long he hopes Lidstrom will play. “I think Nick, he’s 37, 38 years of age. Certainly the superstars, it appears to me, can play into their early 40s. Steve Yzerman was a real good player for us in his late 30s; unfortunately, injury caught up to him. Chris Chelios at the age of 45 is still going strong....”
