Surgery For Kolzig

Lightning backup Olie Kolzig will have surgery on Saturday to repair a ruptured distal tendon in his left forearm. The surgery will be performed in Washington by orthopedist Ben Shaffer, a Capitals team physician who treated Kolzig when he played in Washington. Lightning head trainer Tommy Mulligan said Kolzig will be out three to four months.

Kolzig Done In Washington

Olie Kolzig, the Washington Capitals goaltender through some of the best and worst moments in the team’s history, confirmed yesterday what had been suspected for weeks: He has played his final game for the franchise that drafted him in 1989.

Conspicuous Absence

...just hours after an excruciating overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, one absence was conspicuous.

Veteran goaltender Olie Kolzig had cleaned out his locker stall and left the building, skipping the mandatory meeting. He did not speak to reporters. After Monday’s 3-2 loss at Verizon Center, he stripped his name tag off of his locker stall.

Kolzig, a fixture in the Capitals’ net for a decade before being essentially replaced by trade-deadline arrival Cristobal Huet, did not play after a 5-0 loss in Chicago on March 19. In recent weeks, Kolzig seemed increasingly detached as Huet led the Capitals to the franchise’s first playoff berth in five years. Kolzig, 38, did not return a message left on his cellphone, and his agent, Art Breeze, declined to describe his client’s thought process, other than to say: “The choice will be Olie’s as to where he plays next year...”

Update 1:20pm ET: El-Bashir hears from Kolzig and updates at his blog,

First, Kolzig said he doesn’t want to give any interviews for a few days as he collects his thoughts. He said he obviously has some decisions to make and will talk soon.

Second, he also said he didn’t remove his nameplate from his locker stall at Verizon Center out of anger. He acknowledged that the Caps’ Game 7 loss to Philly could “possibly” have been his last game in Washington, so he wanted to take the nameplate as a memento. He plans to frame it with a jersey.

No “Pity Party” for Kolzig

“I’ve had a good run here,’’ Kolzig said Thursday. “And I hope it continues in the next two months.’’

In other words, until the playoffs are over. After that, Kolzig will become a free agent, presenting an understandably murky future for a 38-year-old goalie who lost his starting job just as the Capitals were becoming good again.

“The worst thing I can do is have a pity party,’’ Kolzig said. “I’m not really going to talk about the situation until the end of the year, but it is what it is and I’ve come to grips with it.’’

Kolzig has been supplanted by Cristobal Huet, acquired from Montreal at the trade deadline.

Caps Need A Winning Streak

“There’s no question: There’s desperation now, even though it’s not even 20 games yet,” Kolzig said after yesterday’s practice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. “Any time you go on a winless streak that we’ve been on, you’ve got to turn the tables and do the exact opposite to get back into it. For the good teams, the losing streaks never outlast the winning streaks.

“The bottom line is we have to put a streak together.”

Of the 16 teams that qualified for the playoffs last season, only Ottawa had as few as 13 points after as many games. But the talented and deep Senators won nine of their next 11 games and earned a spot in the Stanley Cup finals.

Caps Looking For Scoring

“The overriding theme for us is [a] lack of scoring,” Hanlon said. “That’s the main thing. Defensively we’ve made as big an improvement as any team. We don’t have those chaotic games where we’re running around. But there’s a price for scoring goals and, at times, we’re not doing that.”

Added veteran goaltender Olie Kolzig: “You have to first get ugly goals to get things going. You have to get people in front and throw pucks at the net....”

There’s Only One Team for Kolzig

Kolzig might not be Cal Ripken—he missed 13 games last season with a knee injury—but his numbers are impressive. Nine seasons as the Caps’ regular goaltender, 702 games in goal overall. A regular season winning percentage of slightly better than .500, and just as important, two major NHL awards for community service.

“It’s rare an athlete plays his entire career with one team, but Washington gave me my opportunity and stuck with me when I was coming up and not what they call a top-end prospect,” Kolzig said. “Playing with one team my whole career, that’s something I’d like to hang my hat on.”
