Report: Sens and Pens to Open ‘08 in Prague
by Alanah McGinley on 10/10/07 at 06:25 PM ET
Comments (0)
via TSN,
The Hockey News is reporting that the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins will drop the puck in Prague on a compressed schedule next season.
Sources have told the Hockey News that the season will be pushed back by about a week and will begin either October 9th or 10th. In order to accommodate the change, the league will further compress the schedule early in the season rather than late in the season to avoid the season running one week longer.

Emery’s #1 Status In Doubt
by Paul on 10/10/07 at 03:44 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,
While it might appear Ray Emery is the odds-on favorite to regain the starter’s role once his wrist is healthy, there is every chance Martin Gerber will have used the time to stake a hold on the job that was his last season before he tanked it early in the year. In his first four games – all victories – Gerber has looked solid, if not outstanding.
There is no denying Emery saved the day last year. He picked up the ball when Gerber fumbled and carried it all the way to the Stanley Cup final.
But let us not forget, it wasn’t necessarily a smooth journey.

Marian Hossa Out With Groin Strain
by Paul on 10/10/07 at 12:46 PM ET

via the Ottawa Citizen,
Hossa caught his skate in a rut at the end of practice on Monday and pulled a groin muscle. This morning, coach Bob Hartley ruled him out of tonight’s game against the Senators.
“He really wanted to play but this is not the case where we’re going to bring him back if he’s 80 per cent or 90 per cent,” said Hartley.
“We are all in agreement that he won’t come back until he’s 100 per cent.”

Gerber In Relaxed Mode
by Paul on 10/10/07 at 06:21 AM ET

from the Ottawa Sun,
“He’s relaxed,” said Senators coach John Paddock. “He got off to a good start in the first exhibition game. Last year he didn’t get off to a good start, then had to face (the media).
“I know they have (one) beat writer in Carolina, so there’s about 20 times the amount of people in here right now and that’s every day. That makes a difference. We struggled and those things mentally were tough (on Gerber).”
Gerber admitted he had a difficult time dealing with the pressure after he arrived with a three-year, $11.1 million US contract.

Alfredsson Off To Fast Start
by Paul on 10/07/07 at 09:40 AM ET

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,
“It’s like he had a week off instead of three months. He’s continued right from where he left off in the playoffs,” Senators coach John Paddock said of Alfredsson. “I couldn’t come up with enough superlatives to describe the way he’s playing.”
“He has been just unbelievable to start the season. Everything he touches ... he’s skating well, shooting well. He just sees the ice so well,” said Senators centre Mike Fisher of his captain.
Alfredsson stood out on a night when the Senators got a great team effort. The penalty killing was flawless again and is now a perfect 20-for-20 on the season.

Spezza Next In Line
by Paul on 10/05/07 at 04:12 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Pierre LeBrun at Sportsnet,
If Jason Spezza ends up as a RFA come July 1, Kevin Lowe will no longer be the lone rogue GM filing offer sheets on hot commodities.
With Dany Heatley taken care of, the focus for the Ottawa Senators shifts to linemate Jason Spezza, a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
A deal won’t get done soon. Spezza’s agent Rick Curran will probably wait until the New Year to get serious talks going, giving his client time to build up yet another monster season. That’ll give him just a tad more leverage in talks.

Looks Like Heatley Has A Deal
by Paul on 10/03/07 at 06:22 PM ET

from Darren Dreger at TSN,
Dany Heatley has agreed to a 6-year contract extension with the Ottawa Senators. Sources tell TSN that the salary averages $7.5 million per year.
Although details of the structure remain confidential, sources say it’s similar to the contract Daniel Briere signed in Philadelphia in terms of a heavily weighted salary at the front of the contract that ratchets downward, making the cap hit the team will absorb more attractive.

Gerber #1 For Now
by Paul on 10/02/07 at 09:03 AM ET

from the Ottawa Citizen,
Scenarios change so quickly, the starting job sometimes falls from the sky.
“You never know what the situation is,” Gerber says. “All I can do is put everything out there, try to work hard and everything else takes care of itself usually. You have to stay healthy. A lot of things play into it.”
The 34-year-old from Burgdorf, Switzerland, is more comfortable in his Canadian environment now, and more comfortable in the same old net. Known as a goaltending technician, Gerber has been working on the athletic side of his game - in particular, quickness and mobility.

Sens Looking For Fast Start

from the Ottawa Sun,
Senators coach John Paddock will have captain Daniel Alfredsson back on the right side with centre Jason Spezza and winger Dany Heatley when the Senators open the season tomorrow in Toronto.
With the Senators playing seven games in the first 11 days of the season, Paddock believes it’s crucial the team begin the year on the right foot.
“The last two or three days I’ve looked at the schedule and, obviously, you want to get off to a good start because then the schedule becomes extremely light (for the rest of October),” said Paddock. “We go from one extreme to the other.

Spezza Primed for Scoring Race
by Alanah McGinley on 09/30/07 at 11:45 AM ET
Comments (0)
From Don Brennan at the Ottawa Sun,
Earlier this week, Jason Spezza shook his head in bewilderment as he told teammates of a meeting he had just finished up with an equipment rep.
“He’s telling me I’d be 15% better (of a player) with a different mouth guard,” the Senators centre said, chuckling.
Now, we’re not exactly sure how that works, either, but if that’s truly the case, Sidney Crosby should hope Spezza sticks with what he’s wearing. Fifteen percent more of him would cost the Pittsburgh star the scoring race.

Dany Heatley and Senators Delay Negotiations
by Alanah McGinley on 09/27/07 at 07:28 PM ET

From Darren Dreger at TSN,
Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk along with general manager Bryan Murray spent the better part of five hours on Thursday in discussion with Dany Heatley’s representatives, J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpline in Ottawa.
The two groups decided it would be best to walk away from the negotiating table, challenged with the task of re-establishing their positions.
“We had lengthy and detailed discussions regarding Dany’s free agency and we will take some time over the next week to consider each other’s position,” Barry said.

Downie Suspended
by Paul on 09/26/07 at 06:17 AM ET
Comments (0)
from 640am in Toronto,
The NHL has suspended Flyers rookie Steve Downie following a vicious hit on Senators forward Dean McAmmond last night.
Downie was handed a match penalty for attempt to injure. He is now indefinitely suspended by the NHL, pending a review of the hit by the league. Downie was the victim of a clean hit from Christoph Schubert before he immediately got up and sought revenge on McAmmond in the Flyers zone.
See the hit in this post...
added 6:54am, from the Ottawa Sun,
“There’s no place in the game for that stuff,” a seething McGrattan said after the game. “That was a dirty hit and he’s a dirty player. He’s known for that and he’ll get what’s coming to him next time we play him, for sure.
“You don’t want to see stuff like that. We’re not out there to kill each other. At this level, he’ll get what’s coming to him.”
Update September 27, 7:40pm ET:
Just a note that Downie contacted McAmmond to offer an apology. From The Star,
A phone call of apology from Steve Downie has earned the Philadelphia Flyers prospect some understanding from Dean McAmmond but not from the rest of the Ottawa Senators.

McAmmond Suffers Concussion

via TSN,
Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond left the pre-season game against the Philadelphia Flyers on a stretcher in the second period after a vicious hit to the head by Flyers forward Steve Downie.
McAmmond had just passed the puck and was skating behind the Flyers net when Downie leveled him with a shoulder to the head. Downie, who was hit into the boards earlier in the shift by Christoph Schubert was given a match penalty - which means he is suspended indefinitely pending a review.
McAmmond has been diagnosed with a concussion, but he is moving his extremities and has been sent to a hospital for further examination.
Update 12:35am ET:
From Allan Maki at the Globe & Mail,
Dirty. Cheap. Needless. Despicable. Those words don’t just describe Tuesday night’s hit on Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond. They describe the man who delivered it – Steve Downie of the Philadelphia Flyers.

from Darren Dreger of TSN,
Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk is expected to meet with Dany Heatley’s agent, J.P. Barry on Thursday in Ottawa.
And based on preliminary discussions, the Senators are aware of Heatley’s expectations.
It’s believed that Heatley is seeking an average salary of $8.5 million and a multi-year term similar to what Daniel Briere, Chris Drury and Scott Gomez agreed to this summer.
The question is, will Eugene Melnyk pay it?

The Fab Five of the 2007-08 Season
by Alanah McGinley on 09/24/07 at 03:58 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Pierre LeBrun at the CP via Yahoo!
The Ducks may be in flux but they are still mighty. The Sharks smell blood, the Red Wings will soar, the Senators sense destiny and the Rangers plan to rock Broadway again.
Those are the Fab Five as the NHL’s 90th season opens this weekend in London, England, with Anaheim opening defence of its title against rival Los Angeles.
The Ducks romped so impressively to California’s first Stanley Cup last June that giving the NHL its first repeat champion in a decade seemed like a sensible proposition. That’s before superstar defenceman Scott Niedermayer and 48-goal scorer Teemu Selanne started talking about retirement.
note: an earlier LeBrun story is noted here, for more on the London game.

Emery Still Needs More Time

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Ray Emery doesn’t have an answer.
After taking part in his first full practice with the Senators yesterday at Scotiabank Place, Emery told reporters he’s not sure when he’ll be able to play, but doesn’t believe he’s ready yet.
“I’m just working hard at getting back right now. I obviously want to get some games in, but I’ve got to make sure that I’m not going to get hurt when I get in there,” said Emery. “I’m close, but I’m not where I want to be as far as playing a game. It’s kind of frustrating for me right now, but I’ll get in there.”

Experience Counts

from the Ottawa Citizen,
Yet whatever Richardson ends up doing on the ice, he figures to serve an important role for the Senators on the bench and in the dressing room.
He’ll lend an ear if a younger player asks his advice. He’ll remove a struggling player from the dressing room for a pep talk or pat a player on the back for a job well done. He’ll take a prospect home to dinner to make him more comfortable in his surroundings. When Richardson was in Columbus, rookie Gilbert Brule lived with the family for a while.
Think of him as the Kevin Costner character in the baseball movie, Bull Durham, providing whatever tips he can, based on his experiences.

Sens Would Like To Sign All Their UFAs

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
As a matter of fact, Murray said he has already had contract discussions with Redden’s agent, Don Meehan.
“I don’t know (where the Redden stuff comes from),” said Murray. “(Reporters) ask me about trying to sign Heatley and Spezza and then the conclusion (from reporters) is always nothing about those two at all, it’s always about eliminating another player. That’s not what we’re trying to do here. We’re going to try to do as well as we can with the people that we have and, obviously, keep them here.
“But there are a lot of factors involved here: The total dollars, the cap system and can we keep everybody? Will everybody give us an opportunity to sign them or will it be impossible because of the numbers?”

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Alfredsson said he’s not sure if he pulls more weight than Leafs captain and countryman Mats Sundin, but indicated if Forsberg wants a realistic chance to win a championship then Ottawa would be a better choice than Toronto.
“I don’t know, but I think our situation should be able to catch (Forsberg’s) eye,” Alfredsson said yesterday. “Looking at the team we have and the opportunity we have here, I’m sure he’ll realize how close we were last year and he could be the one who could add that little bit of extra confidence for us.”
Senators GM Bryan Murray, who is trying to add a top-six forward, has spoken with Forsberg’s agent, Don Baizley, three times and has also asked Alfredsson to phone Forsberg and talk up Ottawa.

O’Neill Weighing His Options

While the Maple Leafs make their pre-season debut in Edmonton tomorrow, Jeff O’Neill sits and waits.
Could the free-agent sniper, who spent the past two seasons with Toronto, be headed to the Ottawa Senators?
O’Neill’s agent, Ian Pulver, told Sun Media yesterday that discussions have been held with Senators general manager Bryan Murray.
“Jeff O’Neill continues to review all of his options,” Pulver said.

Hockey Thoughts

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
• The Ottawa Senators have quietly expressed some interest in Curtis Joseph as a backup goaltender should they be able to find a home for Martin Gerber and his $3.7-million US contract.
• Word around is that the new tough NHL was ready to give Mark Bell a 30-game suspension had he not shown such remorse and personal growth to the league. Doubt Ferguson, who said he did his due diligence on Bell, was aware of that when he tied up $2 million in summer cap money trading for him.
• A waste of money: Whichever NHL team ends up signing Peter Forsberg. He has little left to offer.

Contract Year For Mike Fisher
by Paul on 09/16/07 at 06:07 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Erin Nicks at the Ottawa Sun,
While the Senators would undoubtedly be overjoyed if No. 12 experiences a healthy and fully productive season in 2007-08, they surely must realize that if Fisher comes away with a newfound goal scoring vigour, he could easily price himself out of the franchise’s range by next summer. Keep in mind that the Senators already have their backs creeping against the wall before the season has begun, with similar players such as Scott Hartnell landing a six-year, $25.2-million (all terms US) contract with Philadelphia. It’s a safe bet to assume that many GMs would willingly cough up a Hartnell-type salary—an average of $4.2 million per season—for one of Ottawa’s greatest assets. In fact, several would probably consider that number as a starting point.
