COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire will undergo surgery on his injured ankle and is expected to be sidelined 10 to 12 weeks, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today. The surgery is scheduled to take place on Friday and will be performed by Dr. Brian Donley at The Cleveland Clinic.
Leclaire, 26, has appeared in 12 games this season and posted a 4-6-1 record with a 3.83 goals-against average and .867 save percentage. He originally suffered the injury in a preseason game vs. the Minnesota Wild on October 3. He missed eight games earlier this season due to the injury and last played in a game on December 18 at Dallas.

I think it is fine the way it is now, everything is always the goalies’ fault. It makes me laugh. Whenever there’s something wrong in hockey, it’s always the goalies’ fault. Every player thinks our gear is too big.”

Heck, I thought everyone blamed Gary Bettman when something went wrong!

via Puck-rakers,
Goaltender Pascal Leclaire has signed a three-year contract worth $11.4 million with the Blue Jackets, The Dispatch has learned.
The deal will pay Leclaire $3 million this season, $3.6 million in 2009-10 and $4.8 million in 2010-11.
added 5:22pm, from the Columbus Blue Jackets,
“We’re very happy to have signed Pascal to a new contract that will keep him with the Blue Jackets for the next three seasons,” said Howson. “He is an important part of our team and we think he will continue to improve and play a significant role in helping us reach our goals.”

from Puck-rakers,
Talked to agent Don Meehan today (Wednesday). He’s expecting to talk with Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson again on Thursday regarding goaltender Pascal Leclaire, and it sounds like the talks are heating up ... in a good way. It’s believed to be a three-year deal. Money is the issue, but they might be getting close.
I’ve been saying all along that Leclaire signing an offer sheet is unlikely. I still believe that’s the case. But if you’re looking for a candidate, look no further than the Colorado Avalanche. First off, the Avs have quite possibly the worst goaltending tandem in the NHL…

Health Problems in Columbus

From Tom Reed at Puck-rakers,
You just knew the Jackets’ good health wouldn’t last. Goaltender Pascal Leclaire will miss at least the next two games with a possible concussion, coach Ken Hitchcock said. He was struck in the mask with a puck during pre-game warm-ups on Sunday.
Freddy Norrena will make his second straight start against Calgary on Tuesday night in Nationwide in what promises to be a testy game. [...]
Jackets’ winger David Vyborny is out for 7-to-10 days with a knee sprain. There was fear Sunday night that Vyborny’s season and possibly his Blue Jackets career might have been over.
And from TSN: “The Blue Jackets called up goaltender Dan LaCosta from the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL on an emergency basis.”

Injuries Hurting Blue Jackets

from Bob Hunter of the Columbus Dispatch,
A season can change in a blink of an eye, or in this case, a crash into a goaltender.
A speeding bullet called Quintin Laing rammed defenseman Jan Hejda into Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire, whose neck hit the goal post the way a runaway car hits a tree. Depending upon how long Leclaire is out, that could have been the most important play of the season.
continued...Plus with Fedorov and Modin still out, the playoff run for Columbus is in serious trouble…

Pascal Leclaire Leaves Game In Loss To Edmonton

from the Columbus Dispatch,
Goaltender Pascal Leclaire, whose early career has been dogged by leg injuries, left the game at 5:58 of the second period, complaining of a tight hamstring.
After the game, the Blue Jackets—from coach Ken Hitchcock to Leclaire himself—stressed that the injury was minor, that Leclaire might be out only a brief while, if he missed any time at all.
“We’ll see how it is (today),” Leclaire said. “But I don’t have any sharp pain or anything.
“It’s more like a tweak, but it’s not something I wanted to take a chance on.”

from The Lantern,
“Goaltenders by reputation are quirky, to say the least,” Sharrock said. “Pazzy (Leclaire) is the most down-to-earth, I don’t want to say normal, but I will, he’s probably the most normal goaltender that I’ve ever been around.”
Ohio State students in a French 104 class will have the opportunity to see how “normal” Leclaire really is when he visits today from 2-3 p.m. in Hagerty Hall 145.
Leclaire, a native of Repentigny, Quebec, grew up in the French-speaking Canadian province. The visit is an opportunity for the class to get a personal perspective on the people, language and culture of Quebec, one of the French-speaking areas the class is studying.

Leclaire Seeing Shots & Stopping Shots

from the STATS Blog,
The Columbus Blue Jackets are the surprise team in the early going, and their goaltender, Pascal Leclaire, has been stellar, posting a league-high five shutouts in his nine starts. It shouldn’t come as a shock that Leclaire, who turns 25 on Wednesday, also ranks first among his peers with a 1.12 goals-against average and .957 save percentage.
In the last 10 days, Leclaire has secured wins despite facing his two highest shot totals of the season. On Oct. 25, he faced a season-high 36 and stopped all of them for a 3-0 win over St. Louis. In Los Angeles on Halloween, Leclaire was 33-for-34 in a 4-1 decision against the Kings. He hasn’t lost when facing 30 shots.
