Patrick Roy & Wendel Clark Ceremonies

Tonight, Patrick Roy is standing on the podium in Montreal accepting the great honor of witnessing his number being retired by the Canadiens.  We’ll add his acceptance speech to this post later (assuming it becomes available) as well as a couple more photos. A special night for Habs fans, without a doubt.

Updated...

Tonight was also a special night in Toronto where Wendel Clark also saw his number retired. I thought I’d include a few images from that ceremony on this same post. You’ll find them below.

A Goaltending Idol

From the Montreal Canadiens:

For one generation, the dream was to be like Maurice Richard or Guy Lafleur.  For another, it was all about Patrick Roy.

Before Roy began showcasing his talents in the Canadiens’ crease in 1985, goaltending was generally reserved for the less athletic or, if you prefer, less talented.  That changed quickly with the arrival of the Habs’ netminder, who suddenly had kids across Quebec clamoring to strap on the pads just like their idol.

When Roy decided to hang up his pads after a 19-year NHL career in 2002-03, the league was inundated with stoppers who grew up admiring the Habs’ No. 33.  Just that year alone, there were 29 Quebec native goaltenders lacing up their skates in the NHL.

Update 1:45pm ET: Lynn Zinser at the New York Times has a great summation of Roy’s Top 10 Moments

The video below is a career retrospective in honor of Roy’s jersey retirement on Saturday night, with numerous other NHLers reflecting on his career.

Roy Takes A High Shot & Gives One Back

from Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun,

Craig Conroy twice experienced the wrath of Patrick Roy.

On his first day on the ice as a rookie with the Montreal Canadiens, a high shot in warmup brought about a confrontation with the Hall-of-Fame goaltender…

“It was actually my very first day on the ice. Patrick was on my team for the scrimmage,” said Conroy, who was a little excited in warmup and watched his first shot at Roy get away from him.

“It kept rising and hit him in the head. He kind of stopped everything, cleared off his crease, then he came out and actually punched me in the head with his blocker.

“I thought, ‘What do I do?’ He’s Patrick Roy. I’m just nobody. I didn’t throw any punches or anything. I just kind of took it and they broke it up. I was sent down (to the AHL Fredericton Canadiens) pretty soon after that.”

Patrick Roy Conference Call Transcript

On Saturday night, prior to their game with the Boston Bruins, the Montreal Canadiens will honor Patrick Roy by retiring his No. 33 at the Bell Centre.  The following is the transcript from the Q&A session Roy had with the NHL media today.

Q&A

image

Q. Can you just talk about what it means to you, and did you think this day would come given your departure from Montreal?

PATRICK ROY: Well, you have no control on if they will retire my jersey or not, but I surely hope that that would happen one day. I knew they had a lot of guys to do before me. You know, the Canadiens haven’t done that for a long time, and I felt that the Savards, the Robinsons, Gainey, Dryden, they’ve been a big part of the history of the Canadiens, and I think they deserve that.

The Impact Of Patrick Roy

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,

Oh, it’s a great experience to play for him,” (Kelsey) Tessier, 18, the Avalanche’s fourth-round draft choice this year, said after Colorado’s rookie-camp workout Sunday at Family Sports Center.

“His passion for the game and the will to win are there because he coaches the same way he plays,” Tessier said. “He has the attitude that he hates losing, and that’s the passion he gives our team. It’s just such a great experience to play for him. He gives you every tool to win, and you have no excuse not to. When he was a goalie, he saw the whole ice in front of him and saw everything. And he knows exactly where we should be."…

You can say a lot of things about Patrick Roy, but if you could hear the awe and appreciation in the voice of one of his current charges, Tessier, you wouldn’t even try to diminish his impact as a coach and motivator.

The Game That Changed Everything

from TSN and files from RDS,

On December 2, 1995, the hockey world changed for both Patrick Roy and the Montreal Canadiens in what was supposed to be another Saturday night game at The Forum.

At home to face the Detroit Red Wings, the Habs played their worst home game in franchise history, losing in a 12-1 blowout.

Roy was kept in goal by then head coach Mario Tremblay for the first nine goals, and the Forum fans jeered him when he made an easy save.

Embarrassed, Roy raised his hands in mock celebration.

Roy Will Join The Montreal Greats

from Kevin Mio at Habs Inside/Out,

Canadiens president Pierre Boivin has called a news conference for 3 p.m. today at the Bell Centre at which time he will announce that the Canadiens will retire No. 33 in honour of Patrick Roy as part of the team’s festivities celebrating its centennial season in 2008-09.

Report- Habs Will Retire Roy’s Number

from Mike Boone of Habs Inside/Out,

La Presse reports the Canadiens will retire Patrick Roy’s jersey number in November.

The club would not confirm the story. Columnist Richard Labbé was told the team plans to announce its centennial activities on Sept. 24.

Roy’s number 33 already has been retired by the Colorado Avalanche.

If the story is true, at least one pundit won’t be happy. In March, Red Fisher wrote:…

In my view, Roy abdicated his rights to that honour with his capitulation to irrationalism on Dec. 2, 1995, when a stunned Forum crowd saw him allow nine goals on 26 shots in an 11-1 meltdown to the Detroit Red Wings.

Jonathan Roy Charged with Assault

From Les Perreaux in the Globe & Mail,

The son of hockey legend Patrick Roy has been charged with assault for his part in an infamous hockey brawl last season.

Saguenay, Que., police confirmed a single charge of assault was laid against Jonathan Roy this morning in Quebec court.

The younger Roy, a goaltender for the Quebec Remparts, is the only player or coach charged in the incident March 22 when he stormed across the ice to pound on the opposing goaltender, Bobby Nadeau.

Roy Not Yet Ready for the NHL

From Adrian Dater at the Denver Post,

Patrick Roy will not be the coach of the Avalanche. Not for next season, anyway.

Roy told The Denver Post late Thursday night he wants to stay in Quebec at least through this coming season, mainly to keep coaching his sons, Jonathan and Frederick.

But Roy said he does want to coach in the NHL at some point, probably when his younger son, Frederick, leaves junior hockey.

“When Fred is done, it will be different,” Roy said. “But this is OK with me for now.”

Patrick Roy? Just Kidding

From Bernie Lincicome at the Rocky Mountain News,

Wait. I was only kidding when I suggested Patrick Roy for the coach of the Avalanche. So, I take no credit or blame if Roy gets to stand under his own jersey hanging up there in the Pepsi Center rafters, along with those two Stanley Cup banners he helped win.

My suggestion was in keeping with the Avs’ fondness for leafing backward through their old scrapbooks. Oh, look. There’s Ray Bourque.

Why not him? Or how about Adam Deadmarsh, great name. Chris Drury, old Captain Clutch, still playing, could be a player-coach.

No, it is Roy, the only name that gets the blood up, causes conversation.

Could Patrick Roy Return to the Avs?

From Adrian Dater at the Denver Post,

Roy, who retired in 2003 with the Avs, has coached the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League since then. Speculation has begun that he might be ready to return to the NHL with the Avs behind the bench.

“Am I interested? Right now I am very happy in Quebec with the Remparts. I really haven’t thought about one day making the move to the NHL. Right now this is only a rumor or speculation,” Roy told RDS.

But Roy seemed to leave a little wiggle room that he might be interested.

“We’ll see what’s going to happen. Francois Giguere will certainly have a list of candidates that he would like to meet.”

Hockey Isn’t Cuddly

From Pierre LeBrun at Sportsnet,

Fighting used to be ingrained in hockey culture. These days, however, there seems to be more taste for a kinder, cuddlier game. So is it time for fighting to go?

I can only shake my head at the attention the Jonathan Roy story has received in this country this week.

When did the tree huggers take over this bloody country? When did we all become such bleeding hearts that a junior hockey brawl shocked our collective senses so badly we became outraged?

Afternoon Line

From Adam Proteau’s mailbag at The Hockey News:

[To:] Adam,
I was wondering if Cristobal Huet would return to Montreal after he is a free agent in July? [...]
Dianne B., Ottawa, Ont.

[To:] Dianne,
The only way Huet returns to Montreal is if Carey Price quits hockey to join a Zen Buddhist retreat, and Jaroslav Halak receives an eight-year, $80-million restricted free agent offer from Kevin Lowe in the off-season.

added 5:03pm, We had two Morning Lines, so why not two Afternoon Lines…

from Adrian Dater at All Things Avs,

He blew up at me several times, probably the biggest being after I wrote of his also-legendary incident when he smashed up the office of Bob Hartley in 1999, in Anaheim.

Roy smashed up Hartley’s office with his goalie stick, after being pulled briefly in a game, one in which the Avs won but Roy didn’t get credit for the victory. The Avs did a good job of keeping it quiet, but a few days later I got word of it and wrote about it. Roy not only came after me, he went on a kind of witch hunt around the team as to who leaked it. A few people were falsely accused, and it was a full-blown circus in the locker room for a while.

Patrick Roy Suspended For 5 Games, Son Gets 7 Games

from the CP via 660 News,

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has suspended Quebec Remparts coach Patrick Roy for five games for his role in a weekend brawl.

The league said today that Roy is being suspended for “prejudicial conduct” related to his team’s scrap with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens on Saturday....

Jonathan Roy was suspended for seven games for barrelling into the Chicoutimi goaltender and pummelling him with repeated blows.

Update 2:52pm ET: From Marty Henwood at Hockey.com,

When it comes to the Roy family, apparently the apple doesn’t fall all that far from the tree.

A piece of friendly advice to the Roy clan? Time to put in a call to the doc and seek a little anger management, provided the caller can stay on the phone long enough prior to dropping an f-bomb and hanging up.

Update 5:02pm ET: From the CP,

Quebec’s director of public prosecutions has launched a criminal investigation into the junior hockey brawl that netted suspensions for former NHL great Patrick Roy and his son, among others.

The province ordered the investigation after the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League suspended Roy, the Quebec Remparts coach, for five games for his part in an ugly brawl involving his son.

Update 6:38pm ET: From CJAD,

“I certainly regret not taking better control of the situation,” said Roy.

Roy did not respond to suggestions he egged his son on, but says he accepts the league’s ruling.

“My goal is to never make this sort of mistake again,” he said.

Willing Combatants Only

From Jeff Marek at CBC,

Well, by now we’ve all seen the video of Patrick Roy’s son Jonathan attacking Chicoutimi netminder Bobby Nadeau.  If you haven’t seen the clip yet, have a look.  QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau will rule on the incident sometime Tuesday.

We all have our opinion on the incident itself. It appears that Patrick Roy motioned to his son to skate down the ice and attack the other goalie, who wanted no part of the encounter as is evidenced by the video.

I can never condone that.

Patrick Roy Coaching Incident

From the Canadian Press,

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey league fined the Quebec Remparts $2,000 Thursday following an incident involving head coach Patrick Roy.

Roy, the NHL’s all-time leader in wins by a goaltender, earned an extreme game misconduct penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after confronting the officials following Sunday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

Roy was not suspended for the incident.

Dad Wants To Fix Patrick Roy’s Image

from the CP via Yahoo,

...And, like any good dad, Michel Roy is standing up for his son with “Le Guerrier,” which translates into English as “The Warrior.”

Michel Roy says the French-language book - there are no immediate plans for an English version - is aimed at correcting the public perception of Patrick Roy’s life and career.

“I wanted to present Patrick as he is,” Michel Roy said at the book’s launch on Tuesday. “I think that the image that people often have of Patrick is not the real picture of Patrick. He’s not like that.”
