Foppa Wanted In Russia

from David Staple at the Cult of Hockey,

And so it begins, the endless speculation on where Peter Forsberg will play if and when he plays this season.

Ak-Bars Kazan has started talks with Forsberg’s swedish representatives, in an attempt to get the Tre Kronor artist to join the new Russian Continental Hockey League team, reports Peter Adler, the Euro-hockey expert.

Forsberg Update- Maybe, Maybe Not

via Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Talking to some of my Swedish buds, there is growing optimism that Peter Forsberg will be able to play this season - and maybe sooner than the Christmas-at-the-earliest previous scenario.
As Foppa himself would say, though, “we’ll see.” But the people I’ve talked to say his foot is doing better than expected, and that he’s itching to continue his career.

Forsberg Still Trying To Resolve Foot Issues

via Rick Sadowski of the Rocky Mountain News,

“Peter still has this foot issue,” Don Baizley, Forsberg’s agent, said Wednesday. “He has to have that resolved before anything is going to develop on that front. There’s nothing new on that score at the moment.

“Peter has done some skating and he wants to play, but only if the foot is right.”

For The Love Of Foppa

from the Casper Star-Tribune,

She had a passion for Peter Forsberg.

That would be hockey player Peter Mattias Forsberg, who spent most of his professional career with the Colorado Avalanche.

When the lady found out sports memorabilia dealers Kim and Tim Attaway had a photo for sale autographed by said Mr. Forsberg, she was overcome.

“She got down on her knees, and we thought she was really having a heart attack,” Kim says. “We were very frightened. We were thinking about calling 911 because she was grabbing her chest and she was screaming and she fell on the floor.”

Let The Rumors Begin

from Adrian Dater at All Things Avs,

This was just a casual skate-around, but Foppa is slated to play in a charity game with a Swedish team named the Icebreakers this week. And, it makes me wonder how bad his foot problems are at the moment, if he’s doing this stuff.

Forsberg Months Away From Playing

from Adrian Dater of the Denver Post,

If you’re an Avalanche fan still holding out hope Peter Forsberg will play again this coming season, don’t even think about it until at least Christmas.

After consulting with more doctors about his troubled right foot in his native Sweden, Forsberg was told he would need several months of rehabilitation if he wanted to have hope of playing again, a source close to the Avs star said.

added 8:22pm, from Rick Sadowski of the Rocky Mountain News,

According to a report in the Swedish newspaper Expressen, Forsberg has a muscle problem in his right foot that has been the root of his health troubles in recent seasons, and he will need several months of rehabilitation for a chance to salvage his career....

A muscle on one side of Forsberg’s foot doesn’t work normally because a muscle on the other side has caused an imbalance. Forsberg told the paper that he can walk and even run without a problem but has trouble when he puts on a skate.

Reminiscing with Adam Deadmarsh

From Adrian Dater at All Things Avs in the Denver Post,

Christa [Deadmarsh] was telling me that Peter Forsberg recently paid a visit to their house. Forsberg and Deadmarsh were inseperable in their playing days with the Avs, always competing against one another in some kind of game.

Their latest grudge match involves golf, where the winner of a round gets a green jacket to wear and lord over the other. I guess Peter won by one stroke in their latest match, shooting an 80. When he got back to Sweden, he texted Deadmarsh asking what the temperature was in Idaho that day - “80 perhaps?”

The two reminisced some over their playing days, particularly the Kings-Avs playoff series of 2001. Christa and Adam joked to Peter that if only his spleen had burst a couple games earlier, the Kings would have had a better chance.

Foppa Talk

from Rick Sadowski of the Rocky Mountain News,

After playing nine of a possible 19 games during the regular season, Forsberg sat out for the third time in 10 playoff games Thursday night as the Avalanche was eliminated by the Detroit Red Wings.

Groin problems prevented Forsberg from being on the ice in the finale, but he said a chronically sore foot was the root of the problem.

“I’d like to continue to play, but it’s getting to a point where if it’s like this, I go out on the ice and I pull groins,” he said. “It’s tough to play like that and not play at your best.”

more

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

He was the greatest player I ever saw in person, in his prime. I never got to see Gretz or Bobby Orr in person play in their prime, but I did with Foppa, and he was the best I ever saw.

Shaking hands with him tonight, it definitely felt it was for the last time. For a second, I thought I might even choke up. Listen, I’m objective about things with the Avs, but after you’ve known and covered a guy most of the last 13 years, you’re human and to me he was just Peter, a guy I’ve spent a large portion of my life around in those years.

I guess Forsberg got his wish too, remember him saying he didn’t want to play in Detroit?  Well, he didn’t!

Afternoon Line

Noted by Rick Sadowski in the Rocky Mountain News:

Red Wings forward Darren McCarty is convinced Forsberg will play.

“I’m pretty sure, unless Forsberg’s leg’s going to fall off, he’ll probably be in there for Game 3,” McCarty said. “They’re a veteran team. They’re well-coached and they’ve got guys that have been in different situations like this before. It’s not like they’re a young team.”

The Foppa Saga

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,

He entered the zone of diminished returns.

There is no turning back.

Forsberg has become more trouble than he is worth. His unreliability is demoralizing.

It raised eyebrows when he was in and out of the lineup down the stretch of the regular season after signing with Colorado on Feb. 25.

This raises doubts.

At this time of year, in the most relentlessly testing of professional sports’ postseasons, any skepticism — even subconscious — about a teammate’s resolve is a major problem.

Roller-Coaster Ride With Foppa

from All Things Avs,

This is the bargain Francois Giguere made with the devil when he re-signed Peter Forsberg, all right. When Foppa is in the lineup, all is right with the world. You think he’s finally turning the corner on his health and things will stay good for a while and then - pow - right in the stomach comes the next injury.

In the Avs’ case, it came right before Game 1 tonight, and although the Avs tried to put on brave game faces and act like nothing had happened, you could tell it killed them. And this, as I’ve said before, is the problem with having Forsberg around....

I don’t anticipate Forsberg back for Game 2, and if the Avs lose again as I anticipate partly because of that, they’re done, even if Foppa comes back for Game 3.

Avs Get A Bargain

from Woody Paige of the Denver Post,

When he rejoined the Avalanche on Feb. 25, Forsberg signed a one-year, $5 million contract, with the pro-rated share actually only $1 mil.

It could turn out to be the deal of the century.

In the 16 regular and postseason games he’s played, the Splendid Swede has provided the Avs with 17 assists and two goals.

Against Minnesota, he had four assists and a goal, despite being a constant target for the Wild.

“I’m actually feeling better (physically) than I thought I would at the end of the series. There were a couple of real physical games in Minnesota, but these last two weren’t as physical. I feel good. I didn’t think I had that great of a series, but maybe I’ll do better.

“I think being the first team to (advance) in the Western Conference is a positive for us. If you’re going to play a lot of games, you want as much rest as you can get, and we’ll have a few days before we play again.”

Forsberg Takes Avalanche Back in Time

From John Branch at the New York Times (Wednesday edition),

“I wish I had played 40 games instead of 9, but that’s just the way it is,” Forsberg said in the locker room Sunday. “On the other hand, I should be pretty rested coming into the playoffs.”

Ploy or not, fans have found themselves attracted, again, to Forsberg’s rare blend of grit and artistry. He played his first nine N.H.L. seasons with the franchise, helping lead it to Stanley Cup championships in 1996 and 2001. His vaunted place in local lore was cemented when, during the 2001 playoffs, he had his ruptured spleen removed after helping the Avalanche clinch a spot in the conference finals.

Get Used To It

from All Things Avs,

I’m officially throwing in the towel when it comes to trying to make sense of anything to do with Peter Forsberg. Really, I give up.
I will never, ever, write anything other than Forsberg is “questionable” to play a game. His latest absence is just another train wreck of head-scratching misinformation/mysteriousness.

I should have known better than to swallow the Avs’ company line - again - yesterday, when I wrote what they said, that he was “likely” to play today in Minnesota. Forsberg did not play today, with yet another alleged “groin” injury.

Forsberg’s Problems

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,

And for at least one afternoon — when Forsberg had two assists in a home victory over Dallas on March 8 — it seemed that any doubts about the wisdom of the signing were about to be dispelled.

Since then, though, it has been a mess and a four-ring circus that, especially when considered in the context of a bizarre run of injuries to other high-profile players on the roster, has contributed to the Avalanche’s inconsistency and inability to not only jump to the top of the mediocre Northwest Division but stay there.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: While the official explanation — the sport’s “plague,” a groin problem — almost certainly can pass legalistic muster, the bigger problems that have bedeviled Forsberg since his return to the lineup remains the same old problems.

His foot and ankle.

Forsberg Needs To Play His Game

from All Things Avs,

...He fires up the opposing team, and crowd, too much by trying to be Steve McQueen on the ice and going after anyone who hits him. What happens is, Player X from the other team lays a big hit on him. Foppa gets mad and either tries to run said player, or lifts his hands in frustration to the ref over a non-call. Then the home crowd gets into it, mocking Foppa for whining and the home team gets into it because they know they’re getting Foppa off his game mentally, so they keep hitting him.

So, by then, Foppa is rattled, the home crowd makes it a sport to mock him and goes nuts when the next home team player lays the next hit on him. Forsberg would be much better off just letting it go, playing a skill game and avoiding all the rough stuff.

Avs Still Missing Smyth & Forsberg

from the CP via TSN,

Ryan Smyth and Peter Forsberg were both kept out of the Colorado Avalanche’s lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Smyth skated effortlessly earlier in the day and showed no signs of the concussion and shoulder injury that forced him to miss five games. Forsberg, out with a strained groin, didn’t take the ice at all in the Avalanche’s morning skate.

The Mysterious Forsberg

from All Things Avs,

Never have I encountered a more mystifying person and player than Forsberg. As soon as you feel like things are going to be fine with him, something always pops up. That’s why I was surprised for about, oh, a tenth of a second last night when Avs Vice President, PR man and Official Voice of the Avalanche, Jean Martineau, told me Forsberg wouldn’t play because of a groin issue.

Here’s what I think might be the case: Forsberg wasn’t going to play all along last night. But rather than just say he was too tired to play, they said he had a groin pull.

Why they would do that, though, if that’s the case, doesn’t make a lot of sense. Why get the fans all worried - as they always are about No. 21 - by saying he’s hurt again?

Foppa Fever

from the Denver Post,

“He’s huge,” said Per Karlquist, chairman of Denver’s Swedish American Chamber of Commerce. “He’s second to the king.”

So who’s third? Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom maybe?

“No,” Karlquist says. “The queen."…

“He’s the Michael Jordan of hockey,” said Chris Fuselier, owner of the Blake Street Tavern in LoDo and an original Avs season-ticket holder. “This is one of the three most exciting things to ever happen to the Avs — when they traded for Patrick Roy and Ray Bourque, and now bringing Forsberg back. They had become a nonstory, but things are going to be hopping now.”

Forsberg Feels He Can Add To The Avs

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Forsberg said Monday he hadn’t had a setback, but rather he didn’t want teams holding off on other plans by waiting on him. In short, he didn’t want teams depending on him. That’s not necessarily a good thing.

There are many reasons Forsberg ended up back in Colorado. One of them, apparently, is the Avs made it clear they were going to share the risk with Forsberg because risk is part of the package when dealing with Forsberg....

“I miss playing hockey,” he said. “It’s hard when you’re sitting on the side when I think I can go out and do good.”

Blackhawks Could Pay Forsberg

from Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald,

While it’s believed Forsberg would prefer to sign with a team that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup right now --if he decides to even play again—the Hawks are in the picture because of their financial flexibility beyond this season.

Forsberg has told the Hawks he hopes to play for a few more years if he can skate on his gimpy feet and ankles, and it’s likely the deal Tallon has presented Forsberg is for at least two years past this one, perhaps in the neighborhood of $5 million a year.

OK, this is no joke.

According to an NHL source with inside knowledge of the situation, the Blackhawks are among a handful of teams still in the picture to sign Peter Forsberg.

According to sources, Forsberg likes the direction the Hawks are going and he is intrigued about the possibility of playing with talented rookies Jonathon Toews and Patrick Kane.

Hawks general manager Dale Tallon did not want to comment extensively on the Forsberg situation.

“We’re in the mix,” was all Tallon wanted to say Saturday morning.

It Could Happen Again Next Year

Fan590 radio in Toronto had a reporter/friend of Forsberg’s on yesterday.  He said Forsberg wants to play in a city that he feels he is comfortable in and sign only for this season.  He would basically showcase himself to other teams for next year, showing he is in playing shape.

Of course, he could do exactly what he is doing now, wait until next February to play, unless the NHL steps in with some type of ruling.

Just Wrong

from Jim Kelley at Sportsnet,

Pardon me if this comes off as anti-Swede or even a mangling of the French Canadian language, but bringing Peter Forsberg back to the NHL at this point of the season is a monumental faux pas.

The idea that any time prior to the NHL trading deadline of February 26 (the day NHL rosters are frozen) any team can sign him and inject him into their lineup is not just a bastardization of all that should be logical and decent in regards to NHL roster rules, but it also makes a mockery of the idea of team building and the value of playing a full NHL season.

Forsberg Unsure Of His Return

from the Philadelphia Inquirer,

Forsberg may have instructed his agent, Don Baizley, to canvass offers for his services, but neither the 34-year-old center nor anyone else is certain he will return to the NHL this winter or spring. The center’s ailing right foot continues to be problematic.

Holmgren, who spoke directly to Forsberg during his scouting mission in Sweden, cannot get a handle on his status.

“I honestly don’t have a feel for what his decision will be, and I didn’t get to see him skate,” Holmgren said. “From talking to him, I’m not sure he is ready in his own mind. He doesn’t seem to know if he’s OK. When he’s ready, he’ll make a decision.”

Sources tell TSN that Forsberg’s agent Don Baizley has been given the green light by his client to start the process of talking to NHL teams that may be interested in the talented but oft injured Swedish forward who is making one final attempt to overcome troublesome and chronic foot problems.

But it should be made clear that beginning the process of talking to NHL teams - which Baizley has reportedly done with a number of franchises - about a potential contract is not to be confused with a firm commitment from Forsberg that he’s ready to return to the NHL.

Taking A Chance With Forsberg

from Chuck Gormley of the CourierPost,

The Flyers are believed to be at the top of Forsberg’s list and if Paul Holmgren can devise a suitable contract offer, Forsberg could be wearing orange and black as early as Valentine’s Day, when the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Flyers at the Wachovia Center.

With a few tweaks, the Flyers can create between $2.5 million and $3 million in cap space. If they offer Forsberg $1 million to play the final 26 games (52 days) of the regular season, his prorated salary of $3.54 million would count against the cap.

If they offer him $750,000 to play the remainder of the season, $2.65 million would count against the cap.

Judging from Forsberg’s recent comments, he’ll want a contract that includes next season and perhaps another, taking him through the 2009-10 season. If that is the case, the aforementioned salary figures (between $2.6 million and $3.5 million) would likely count against the Flyers’ cap....

Which brings us back to our original question: Should the Flyers do it?

Forsberg Has Many Teams To Choose From

from Chuck Gormley at the Sporting News,

Forsberg said he plans on testing his foot on skates in a few days and is “very hopeful” of a successful comeback. As for the Flyers’ chances of getting him, Forsberg was non-committal.

“It’s nice to hear that they want me back and I enjoyed my time in the Flyers organization,” Forsberg said. “It’s one of many options. I haven’t decided even if I will play yet. And I read somewhere that I am only interested in playing for one of the three clubs I’ve played for (Colorado, Philadelphia and Nashville). But I have never said that. I have a lot of options and Flyers are one of them.”

Forsberg said he will make a decision on his return to the NHL as soon as he believes his foot can withstand the rigors of the NHL. He said he understands the NHL imposes a roster freeze following the Feb. 26 trade deadline, “but I hope it will be sooner than that.”

Here’s why the Avs will make a big pitch if he wants to play: First, he’s still Peter Forsberg. Second, the Avs are DESPERATE for some offensive punch right now. Third, the Avs need to get some buzz back with their fans and sell some tickets.
