Penguins Depend On Eaton

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

“If I can chip one in every once in a while, that’s great, but that’s not my role” said Eaton, who has 16 goals in 348 regular-season and 23 playoff games with Philadelphia, Nashville and the Penguins.

“There’s no mystery what my role is. I’ve got to be solid defensively, good in my own end, block shots.”

That, and not any offensive prowess, on the power play or otherwise, is why the Penguins signed him as a free agent in July 2006.

It’s what the Penguins got from him last season, just not enough of it.

Pens Head To West Point

from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

Still, though there will be plenty of bonding time, this will be a working vacation. Last year 1st Sgt. J.B. Spisso, a Greensburg native, put the players through rigorous boot camp-like drills, including dragging a wounded soldier and carrying someone like a firefighter does when taking an unconscious person out of a burning building.

“We do some things that are very unique and very fun ... but you’ve got to go there with the right attitude and that’s the great things about the guys is that they have the right attitude,” Penguins forward Mark Recchi said. “I’ve been on teams where they haven’t got the right attitude and they didn’t get anything out of it, but the guys are excited about it and we’re looking forward to it.”

All Wet

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

The Penguins agree, pretty much to a man, that the high-tech sweaters they will be wearing this season are lighter and more comfortable than the ones they replaced.

They also concur that the new sweaters are extremely effective at repelling moisture, exactly as planned.

Trouble is, quite a few have concluded that is not necessarily a good thing….

“[The sweaters] don’t soak anything in, which I guess is what they wanted,” Recchi said. “But the problem is, it goes through all of your equipment. It goes into your gloves, goes into your skates.”

And eventually saturates the leather in both, leaving the players feeling as if their hands and feet are immersed in liquid. Perhaps because, at least in some cases, they are.

Penguins Sign a Lease

From the AP via TSN,

Pens Look At Crosby For PK

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

Though just 20, he has been hockey’s top ambassador for some time. He was the NHL’s scoring champion and MVP last season and was named the Penguins’ team captain in the offseason.

Now he could add the final facet to his on-ice role. Already the Penguins’ top-line center, quarterback of the power play and top-three shootout participant, Crosby will be given a chance earn a spot killing penalties.

“We need to try to add more people,” Therrien said. “There’s [Jarkko] Ruutu, who has a little bit of experience with the way we play. And we’re talking about a Crosby. We’re talking about [an Evgeni] Malkin. We’re talking about [an Erik] Christensen.”

The Winter Classic Sells Out in 40 Minutes

From WBEN in Buffalo,

The Buffalo Sabres outdoor game at Ralph Wilson Stadium—officially called AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic New Year’s Day- sold out 74,000 tickets in under 1 hour Tuesday morning.

The game, against the Pittsburgh Penguins, began offering tickets at 10:00 am at the Bills Ticket Office outside the stadium and online at Ticketmaster.com. None were available by 10:40 am

It is not known how many tickets went to individual buyers and how many went to brokers, but there are indications that the secondary market is already skyrocketing.  There were no limits on the number of tickets any individual could buy, and immediately after the sell out tickets were being offered on E-bay, at typical prices of $2,000 for six, or roughly $300 each.

Crosby Focused on Team Goals

From the CP via Toronto Sun,

The Pittsburgh Penguins set a lofty standard last season and want to take it even farther in the 2007-08, says star centre Sidney Crosby.

Last year’s surprise Penguins finished tied for third overall in the Eastern Conference with 105 points, but were bumped from the playoffs in the first round by the team they tied with, the Ottawa Senators.  And Crosby, who won MVP honours after leading the league with 120 points, wants both himself and the team to do even better this season.

Esposito Has A Small Chance Of Cracking Pens Lineup

from the Pittsburg Post-Gazette,

Regardless of how management classifies him, it seems extremely unlikely that Esposito will spend this winter with the Penguins.

They have a surplus of NHL-caliber talent up front, so there is no need to force-feed the league to Esposito instead of sending him back to the junior league Quebec Remparts.

“Just like everyone else, you want to make the team, but if I don’t make this team this year, I’m still young,” Esposito said. “I want to come in here and learn a lot and we’ll see what happens.”

No matter what transpires the next few weeks, Esposito figures to take at least one enduring memory out of this camp: He is expected to be in the lineup when the Penguins face Montreal in a preseason game tonight at 7:38 p.m. at the Bell Centre.

The Outdoor Game

from the Buffalo News,

League executives will gather at Ralph Wilson Stadium this afternoon to trumpet the first NHL game to be played outdoors in the United States, one that should shatter the league’s attendance record. The Sabres will host the Pittsburgh Penguins at 1 p.m. Jan. 1 in the home of the Bills.

NBC, one of the league’s television partners, has been pushing for a marquee New Year’s Day event, Collins said. The holiday is one of the busiest days of the year for television use. It traditionally has been an afternoon of college football bowl games for sports fans, but since the advent of the Bowl Championship Series to determine a national champion, most of the top games are on other days.

The league views that as an ideal time to attract fans.

“It will really build a national and North American platform for the league,” Collins (NHL Sr. VP) said. “There’s a lot of interest in the game.”

The Next Outdoor Game

From Eric Duhatchek at the Globe & Mail,

This time around, the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Buffalo Sabres and that too represents an intriguing match-up - although with a 1 p.m. Eastern starting time, it is hard to imagine them fitting in what could be a great legends game beforehand, what with Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey available on the Penguins’ side and a reunited French Connection leading the way for Buffalo. Nor can anyone underestimate the value of getting Sidney Crosby involved in the project, along with the rest of his exciting, emerging Penguins’ team. Even if the event doesn’t strike a chord, the presence of Sid The Kid will
