Coyotes’ forward Raffi Torres faces a disciplinary hearing Monday morning for his hit on Wild defenseman Nate Prosser during Saturday’s game. There was no penalty assessed on the play.

Torres Fined For Elbow On Hejda

Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for elbowing Colorado Avalanche defenseman Jan Hejda in NHL Game No. 549 in Denver on Thursday, Dec. 29, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

No penalty on the play and I am not really sure why Hejda started going down before the hit. Did he see Torres coming or was it just a fall?

A Learning Experience

Hockey’s sociology department is really having a hell of a year. There was the banana thrown at Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers, a black player, during a pre-season game in London. Ont.; there was Simmonds caught on camera calling Sean Avery of the New York Rangers a “faggot” a couple days later. If you wanted to go further, there is the visor debate, which boils down to a sort of libertarian approach to personal safety, much as, say, seatbelts did. We all know how that one turned out.
And then Sunday, there was Raffi Torres and Paul Bissonnette. Bissonnette, the Phoenix Coyotes forward who has become a Twitter celebrity as @BizNasty2point0, who has over 150,000 followers, put a picture of his Coyotes teammate and his wife in their Halloween costumes as Jay-Z and Beyoncé. They had coloured their skin to appear black.
This, unfortunately, is a practice traditionally known as blackface. It wasn’t the shoe polish Al Jolson used to wear, but Raffi Torres painted himself to look like an African-American. And historically, that carries a weight.
To be clear, nobody should be saying that Torres is a racist.

Raffi Torres Hit on Joe Thornton

Joe Thornton was gone for the latter part of the game and no updates on his condition were available to the press in the post-game press conferences.
Others may disagree, but I think it was a clean hit. Still, Thornton’s had a great playoffs and it would be unfortunate if this turned out to be serious at all. We’ll cross our fingers that he’s alright.

The Sharks did not make Joe Thornton available to the media after that 4-2 loss and Todd McLellan said he had nothing to report yet when he was asked about his captain’s status during the post-game press conference.
But a text message to Thornton several hours later did get this response when he was asked the chances he’d be ready to play in Game 5 on Tuesday night.
“100 percent,” he wrote to my Mercury News colleague Mark Emmons. “It’s playoffs, got to play through everything.”

Special Hitting Zone

Now, the Torres/hitting zone ruling might come as a bit of a surprise to Jarret Stoll given that he was given a one-game suspension last week for hitting San Jose’s Ian White into the glass behind the net. So the “hitting zone” - “separate head from body zone?” - area apparently doesn’t extend all the way from the goal line to the glass, but just to some ill-defined area immediately behind the net.
Having been now to three of four GMs meetings and NHL board of governors meetings at which head shots and concussions were extensively discussed, I can assure you I’ve never, EVER heard of any special rules for hits behind the net. Several NHL managers were mystified about this concept when contacted.

My prediction, based on the DVD from March 2010 and “hitting area” rationale, is I don’t believe he’ll be suspended.
My opinion, based on Torres’ penchant for hitting people in head, is he probably should be suspended.
But I will be surprised if is.

How To Handle Hitchcock

When old Blue Jacket teammates Manny Malhotra and Raffi Torres think back to their days in Ohio, it’s not to reflect on the Columbus night life.
“We find ourselves talking about Hitch a lot,” Torres said. “Manny has big time Hitchcock impersonations.”
Ken Hitchcock may be gone, but he is not easily forgotten even if Torres only played for him for a year and a half.
He had some interesting — uh, old school ways — of motivating.
“When I first got there, Hitch was riding me on the bench,” Torres said. “I had just got there. “Manny says to me ‘You got to give it back to him. He wants you to get into a confrontation with him.’”

Torres said he will now approach every game as though it is his last, because, “I never want to be in that situation again.” He said that scoring slumps have long been his nemesis, because he begins pressing and starts losing his way. So, he’s on guard for the start of the season, saying he will play a simple game and let the goals come.
“I’m hungry again,” Torres said. “That’s the thing: You sign a one-year deal for not too much cake, if you don’t have a great year, you’re on the outs looking in.”

Torres May Be A Bargain For Canucks

Raffi Torres didn’t feel great about getting to late August without a contract.
“It sucked,” he said.
Things did get better this week. But with a catch.
Torres signed a one-year, $1-million-US deal with the Vancouver Canucks. Not a lot of comfort or security there. It doesn’t mean this is his last chance. But you can see it from here.
Truth is, Torres has too much talent for this. He can skate, pound and aggravate. He has size, sandpaper and soft hands. He can play anywhere in the lineup. He was a fifth overall pick, scored 27 goals in a season and is in his prime at 28 years old. Talent wise, he should be playing for $3 million right about now. Instead, he’s on his fourth NHL team in three years.

And that’s why the Canucks were able to reportedly sign him to a one-year, $1 million contract, as revealed by Sportsnet Tuesday. With that price point, the Canucks limit risk. They also set themselves for some (inexpensive) rewards.
Because there’s plenty to like here.Torres brings things to the table the Canucks are woefully lacking in. He brings size/muscle/sandpaper. He will forecheck, be a net presence and score garbage goals. His seven power play goals last year with Columbus are more than Steve Bernier managed during his entire Canucks career.
It’s also more than Kyle Wellwood and Bernier had last year combined.

Talking Torres

Raffi Torres and Milan Jurcina, a pair of UFAs, continue to attract serious interest. In the case of Torres, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Boston are three of the teams we keep hearing.
The Bruins have three second-round picks in the upcoming draft so they shouldn’t have trouble meeting the Jackets’ believed asking price. It’s thought that the Bruins also have interest in Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne, another UFA, among others. Torres played for Boston coach Claude Julien in the AHL with Hamilton in the 2002-03 season.
Pittsburgh is said to still have interest despite dealing their second-round pick to Florida for Jordan Leopold. They are looking for a rugged winger with a scorer’s touch to put on a line with Evgeni Malkin. Would the Penguins be willing to part with offensive defenseman Alex Goligoski if the Jackets sweetened the pot?

Flyers Have Interest In Torres, But…

The Dispatch has learned the Philadelphia Flyers are one of the teams with a strong interest in Jackets winger Raffi Torres. The problem is the Flyers do not have a first- or a second-round pick in the upcoming draft. It’s believed general manager Scott Howson is seeking at least a second-round pick. We don’t think there are serious talks between the clubs, but only that the Flyers have a serious interest in Torres.

Raffi Torres Likely To Be Traded By Deadline Day

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson and the agent for unrestricted free agent Raffi Torres spoke during the Olympic break and were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension, the Dispatch has learned. Torres almost certainly will be dealt by Wednesday’s trade deadline.
No surprise here, of course. Howson likes Torres—he’s been part of two organizations that traded for him—but the Jackets are anticipating the return of Nikita Filatov and are likely going to be spending money on rebuilding their blueline.

One month and one day from the NHL trade deadline, all signs point to Blue Jackets left winger Raffi Torres being traded to a playoff contender in exchange for draft picks or prospects.
As of yesterday, the Blue Jackets and Torres’ agent, Eustace King, had not discussed, even preliminarily, a contract extension that would prevent Torres from becoming an unrestricted free agent July 1….
The Blue Jackets, who play the Colorado Avalanche at 9 tonight in the Pepsi Center, would like to keep Torres, too, but money likely will be an issue.

Moving Raffi Torres

Management will leave room for a miracle but look forward with sobriety, which is to say that general manager Scott Howson will be selling when the trade deadline arrives March 3. Torres is in the final year of his contract. So are Milan Jurcina and Fredrik Modin, although Modin has a no-trade clause. These veterans have value, and, absent playoff contention, they should be dealt.
What will the Jackets get in return for, say, Torres? They won’t get the elite center or puck-moving defenseman they have craved for the entirety of their existence. They will get prospects and draft picks. So it goes. The long-range good of the franchise demands that assets be salvaged when and where possible.
There is a chance the Jackets will work out a contract extension with Torres before the trade deadline. But such shotgun negotiations normally do not fare well.

The Torres Family

There is only one Torres family in the NHL, and their tale is both familiar and unique to the hockey world.
They are a hard-working, fun-loving, tequila-drinking clan that overcame tough financial times and racial prejudice to produce the NHL’s first player of Mexican and Peruvian descent.
“The NHL should do more to promote stories like these,” Blue Jackets center Michael Peca said. “It would help inspire kids of multinational backgrounds and let them know there is room for them in our game.”

Torres Separates Shoulder In Fight

The Jackets’ A team played the Blackhawks’ B team in an exhibition at Nationwide tonight. The Jackets won, 7-1 But they lost left winger Raffi Torres to a separated shoulder. Torres will miss six weeks.
“Very costly. Disappointing,” Jackets coach Ben Hitchcock said. “It works every time. Every time you play against a (largely minor-league) team like that brought in here, something bad happens.”
At 14:29 of the second period, Torres backed away from the faceoff circle and squared off with Ben Eager. Torres apparently called out Eager, a noted pugilist, because Eager had slashed Jackets rookie Jake Voracek across the hands during the previous shift.

Torres Ready For A Fresh Start

Raffi Torres needs a little time each morning for his surgically repaired right knee to “get loose,” and he’s anxiously awaiting Wednesday or Thursday, when he’ll skate for the first time in six months.
But Blue Jackets fans need not worry, said Torres, acquired in a July 1 trade with Edmonton for Gilbert Brule.
“When I’m healthy, I’m definitely going to let Columbus know when I’m on the ice,” Torres said. “I’m going to put it all on the line. People are going to know when I’m out there. That’s just how I play.
“I’ve had a couple of rough seasons that I’m not too happy about, so I’m looking for a fresh start.”

Knee Surgery For Torres

The Edmonton Oilers will be without of of their regulars for an extended period of time, as the team learned Monday that forward Raffi Torres will have knee surgery.
Torres has been on injured reserve since Dec. 15 with a sprained anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Torres Keeps On Playing

Last night Raffi Torres played his 201st consecutive regular-season game for the Edmonton Oilers. It’s a streak that dates back to Feb. 21, 2004 and is currently the 16th longest in franchise history.
“I don’t know what the secret is,” said Torres prior to facing the Minnesota Wild.
“I’m just going out there and trying to play the same game every night. It’s not like I’m playing a shy game or anything like that, I guess I’ve just been fortunate to stay healthy for such a long time.”
