Jones Was In A Tough Position With Philadelphia
by Paul on 10/30/09 at 03:01 PM ET

Rich Hammond of Inside The Kings had a chance to chat with Randy Jones who was claimed on waivers from the Flyers yesterday,
Question: It seemed like you were stuck, in a way, with the Flyers’ roster and salary-cap issues. Did that get frustrating? Did it almost feel like it was out of your control?
JONES: “Well, sometimes you do feel that it’s a little out of your control. I guess when it first happened I felt a little (upset) at the situation. You almost want to put blame on someone or just get (mad) at certain individuals, but I came to realize that it’s now how I should be handling it. In reality, I should have played better, if you will. You have to play good enough so that they can’t get rid of you. So it was a tough situation, but you kind of have to make the most out of it.

Flyers Lose Jones
by Paul on 10/29/09 at 01:43 PM ET

from Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly,
Randy Jones won’t be going back on the Flyers’ roster.
The defenseman was claimed Thursday morning by the Los Angeles Kings on re-entry waivers. That means Jones’ $2.75 million cap hit will be split between the Flyers and Kings, who must pay the $15,000 waiver claim price as well
In other words, the Flyers just took a $1.375 million cap hit for a player they lost on re-entry.
Financially, it was a huge gamble and the Flyers lost.
“He would have helped our team but that’s the risk you take,” general manager Paul Holmgren said. “What are you going to do? … Those are the rules. We knew the risks going in.”
Holmgren said a couple clubs asked about him recently, but no one asked the Flyers to put him on re-entry so he could be claimed.

Randy Jones May Be A Salary Cap Casualty
by Paul on 09/24/09 at 07:48 AM ET

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post,
With a 2009-10 salary of $3 million, Jones ranks fourth among Flyers defensemen, behind Kimmo Timonen ($7 million), Chris Pronger ($6.25 million) and Matt Carle ($3.5 million). But with Braydon Coburn ($1.4 million) and Ryan Parent ($765,000) due big raises after this season and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and Danny Syvret pushing hard for roster spots on the blue line, Jones realizes he could become a salary cap casualty.
“Anything can happen,” acknowledged Jones, who is expected to be in the lineup tonight when the New Jersey Devils visit the Wachovia Center for the Flyers’ fifth of seven exhibition games. “It’s a whole new game with the salary cap.
“I’m not coming in looking at that. I want to work my butt off, crack this lineup and have a strong season for 82 games and into the playoffs. I’m not looking at what might happen or what could happen.
“People can look at (my salary) and that’s fine. Guys go through disappointing seasons and some rough patches and last season was one for me. It’s not like I don’t feel I can play in this league.”

from Wayne Fish of phillBurbs,
The procession to the operating room appeared to continue on Thursday when Flyers defenseman Randy Jones disclosed he probably needs right hip surgery.
Jones could be out two months or more.
He joins defenseman Ryan Parent, who is waiting to have surgery for repairs on a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Parent is expected to be out 12-14 weeks.
Jones has undergone several MRI tests, and the pictures are being sent to specialist Dr. Thomas Byrd in Nashville.
“It’s been bothering me,’’ Jones said at the Skate Zone. “I can’t point to one incident. The last couple years, it’s been coming on and getting a lot worse.’’
more and I do believe the Flyers are just a few thousand dollars short of reaching the max on the salary cap.

From CBC,
Jason Smith did not take the morning skate but rode a bike and says he will play. Randy Jones still has a bit of the flu but skated and remains a pre-game decision. Philadelphia head coach John Stevens expects Jones to play, as well.
Steve Downie out with the flu. Believe he did not make the trip.

from the Courier-Post,
Tonight at the Wachovia Center, Jones is likely to be the topic of conversation on the Bruins bench when they take the ice against the Flyers for the first time since the hit that jeopardized Bergeron’s season.
“I knew the time was going to come,” Jones said when asked about possible retribution. “I’m not worried about it."…
Flyers coach John Stevens said he is not sure what to expect when the Bruins and Flyers take the ice tonight, but he probably won’t take any chances.
Enforcers Riley Cote and Ben Eager are expected to be in the lineup.

Free Advice Offered
by Paul on 11/11/07 at 09:31 AM ET

via Tim Panaccio of the Philadelphia Inquirer,
Here’s some free advice to Bergeron: Never go into the corner not expecting to be hit; and never bend over to expose your head and neck when you do.
I wonder if Panaccio would be handing out free advice like this if Patrice Bergeron was a Flyer and Randy Jones was a Bruin?

Jones Suspended for Two Games
by Alanah McGinley on 10/29/07 at 02:37 PM ET

[Updated 4:50pm ET: Jones & Holmgren’s reaction to suspension is below]
From the NHL,
TORONTO (October 29, 2007)—Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Randy Jones has been suspended for two games, without pay, as a result of being assessed a game misconduct during NHL game #146 against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 27, the National Hockey League announced today.
“While it is my determination that Jones did not intend to injure his opponent, he did deliver a hard check to a player who was in a vulnerable position,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “There have been suggestions by some that this hit was comparable to incidents earlier this season where players received significant game suspensions for blows to the head. These comparisons and suggestions are wrong,” Campbell added.

Flyers’ Jones Unlikely to Face Big Suspension
by Alanah McGinley on 10/28/07 at 07:07 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Bob McKenzie at TSN,
There are those who are waiting for the NHL to throw the book at Philadelphia’s Randy Jones for his hit on Boston’s Patrice Bergeron.
There are those who are talking about what sanctions the league should impose on the Flyer organization, in the wake of illegal hits by Steve Downie, Jesse Boulerice and now Jones.
And there are those who are likely to be disappointed.
The NHL has yet to rule on Jones, and won’t do or say anything publicly Sunday, but if the reaction around the league from other GMs, coaches and players is any indication, Jones is not likely to be on the receiving end of a monster suspension, if he’s suspended at all.
