Emery Should Apologize to Sens Fans

From Hugh Adami at The Ottawa Citizen,
Emery may have already offered heartfelt regrets to his teammates. We don’t know because that’s the type of thing that usually stays in the dressing room.
But we haven’t heard one peep from the goalie on how sorry he is after John Paddock was fired as coach by general manager Bryan Murray last week. Which is insulting considering how public Emery was in showing us a side that embarrassed the team and its fans, helped drive a wedge into the dressing room and eventually killed Paddock’s dream of bringing a Stanley Cup championship to this city. Paddock’s dismissal had much to do with his failure to corral a sulking, petulant Emery who kept blowing gaskets because he didn’t have the starting job anymore.

Paddock Points At Emery
by Paul on 03/02/08 at 12:57 PM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Paddock admitted he should have kicked Emery off the ice when he wasn’t working in practice to send a message to the team that you have to work hard to be rewarded with playing time.
In fact, Paddock said it’s his No. 1 regret and ultimately what probably cost him his job.
“One of the things I would do over is the (Emery) stuff. Not really the tardiness,” said Paddock in a conference call with reporters.

Emery Feels Hassled

from Sun Media,
Senators goalie Ray Emery thinks he’s being unfairly targeted by local police.
On Friday night Emery got into a verbal confrontation with a cop after he was pulled over in his Hummer.
Police sources say Emery was “aggressive” with the officer, who pulled the goalie over after he allegedly cut off the cruiser.
Emery, however, said it was the cop who cut across three lanes to get to him.

Sens Need Emery

from Lyle Richardson at the Hockey News,
But with Gerber now mired in a mid-season funk, the Senators have no one else with big-game experience to turn to except Emery.
Forget about shopping him for a replacement, as the salary cap makes most GMs less willing to gamble on a problematic goalie with two years and almost $7 million remaining on his current contract.
Besides, there’s really no one available from other teams who’d be a suitable replacement.
more and other NHL rumor talk too…

Move Emery To Atlanta
by Paul on 01/30/08 at 09:45 AM ET

from the Ottawa Citizen,
If Senators general manager Bryan Murray has had his fill of Emery and is already making inquiries about a trade for another goalie, he should zero in on the Atlanta Thrashers and offer general manager and interim coach Don Waddell a package, which would include Emery, to primarily secure the guy who was sent to Atlanta 21/2 years ago for Dany Heatley: Marian Hossa.
Sure, this might be the biggest fantasy or pie-in-the-sky scenario of the year. Yet speculation is rife about a Hossa trade because talks to get the player, who becomes an unrestricted free agent come June, re-signed to a multi-year contract aren’t going smoothly. Hossa, one of the best two-way players in the game, was a favourite in Ottawa before former general manager John Muckler pulled the rug from under him.

Emery Needs Some Help

from Jim Kelley of Sportsnet,
The simple fact is the kid has become toxic and not just because he was a few minutes late for practice Monday.
Emery has passed the stage of being “free-spirited” and of “moving to a different tune”. He’s now morphed into the worst possible world for an elite athlete; he has become a talent that is too much trouble for his team.
You really expect someone to make a trade for a guy like that?
I understand players go off course from time to time, but Emery has given every indication that he’s a player who has gone off the tracks.
Update 1:49pm ET: From Ken Warren at the Ottawa Citizen,
Ray Emery will be fined as much as the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement will allow, according to Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray.
Murray says Emery, who was late for Monday’s practice on Long Island, will be fined a “substantial” amount.
The Senators general manager says he has talked to other general managers about trading for a new goaltender - the first time he has openly discussed the possibility of dealing Emery.

Emery Late Again
by Paul on 01/28/08 at 06:45 PM ET

from the Ottawa Sun,
Ray Emery is going to have some explaining to do.
The Senators goaltender, who has had his share of time management issues this season, showed up at 4:04 p.m. for the team’s 4 p.m. practice at the New York Islanders’ practice facility.
Senators coach John Paddock didn’t let Emery on the ice. The club is believed to be considering its options - including a suspension.
added 9:10pm, from Ian Mendes at Sportsnet,
After being late for another practice on Monday, you can make the argument that Emery’s trade value has never been lower. So if you are a general manager in Tallon’s shoes, now is the time to strike. He is looking to the future and despite what everyone is saying about Emery today, the guy still has a lot of upside.
And in the Blackhawks arsenal, Tallon holds a netminder with playoff experience that the Senators would likely covet.
And that man is Patrick Lalime.
Ok, just kidding.
While I will always be a fan of Lalime’s, the netminder I am speaking about is Nikolai Khabibulin.

Emery & McGrattan Battle In Practice
by Paul on 01/07/08 at 12:51 PM ET

from Sun Media,
Senators goaltender Ray Emery stopped more than pucks in practice today, getting into a brief scrap with tough guy Brian McGrattan.
The pair laughed it off afterwards, but were none too pleased with each other after they bumpoed during a skating drill. As they squared off and tossed fists at each other, teammates quickly jumped in and ended the brouhaha.

Trading Emery May Be Difficult
by Paul on 12/29/07 at 08:49 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Ray Emery’s days with the Senators could be coming to an end.
One of the players hung a necktie in Emery’s place in the empty net where the backup goalie was supposed to be yesterday during practice at Scotiabank Place….
Murray would probably like to use Emery to acquire a top-six forward, but with Emery’s struggles on the ice and his actions off it, his value may have never been lower.
“I really don’t think they could trade Ray Emery in his current state,” an NHL executive said yesterday. “Nobody is going to want the baggage that goes with him right now.”
Two players told the Sun yesterday that the Senators are having a difficult time with Emery constantly leaving morning skates early or not going on the ice for optional practices.

Alfredsson Has Advice For Emery
by Paul on 12/28/07 at 08:33 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
After swinging his goalie stick and sending some Gatorade bottles on the club’s bench flying, Emery tossed his stick into the stands before heading to the dressing room.
Alfredsson said last night if Emery wants to get back in net he has to work harder in practice and earn a start from coach John Paddock because the current situation is frustrating for everyone involved.
“To get considered for a start, (the coaching staff) is looking for (Emery) to show that he wants to be in there,” said Alfredsson, who didn’t see the incident. “You have to work hard in practice to show that you want to play. That’s what most players do when they’re not playing and the goalies are no different.”
added 12:42pm, via the Globe and Mail,
The Ottawa Senators held an open practice on Friday morning in Ottawa with only one goaltender on the ice.
Ray Emery, who ended Thursday morning’s skate with an on-ice tantrum, was nowhere to be seen a day later. He was sent home by team officials after showing up at the rink.
added 12:50pm, from the Ottawa Sun,
“I told him to go home because he wasn’t feeling good,” said Senators coach John Paddock after practice. Paddock added he expects Emery to be back at practice on Saturday.

Emery Pays Tribute To Ali

from the Ottawa Citizen,
When Ray Emery unveiled his new helmet yesterday, the Ottawa Senators organization held its collective breath.
Memories are still fresh of the firestorm Emery ignited two seasons ago, when he briefly donned a helmet carrying images of convicted rapist Mike Tyson.
So a great sense of relief washed over everyone when Emery’s new helmet was revealed to be carrying two images of The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, who was everything to boxing (and humanity) that Tyson wasn’t.

Moving Emery

from The Good, The Bad And The Duthie at the Ottawa Citizen,
I got a 2-hour sermon on how Gerber is the greatest thing out of Switzerland since Roger Federer, and how Ottawa will trade Emery, get after another big-time scorer, and win the cup without breaking a sweat. (These, of course, are the same guys who would have traded Gerber for a Gatorade last season.)
They insist the “trade Emery” talk is serious water-cooler material in Ottawa (Assuming people actually still talk at water-coolers, which I highly doubt). If that’s the case, it’s time for a reality check.

Emery Tweaks His Back
by Paul on 11/13/07 at 07:54 AM ET

from the Ottawa Citizen,
Ray Emery has been thrown another curveball in his attempt to earn more ice time in the Ottawa Senators’ net.
Emery, already in coach John Paddock’s doghouse for questionable work habits during practice, left the ice early yesterday because of back spasms that he said originated when he was playing baseball during an off-day on Sunday.
Emery says something happened when he bent over to throw pop-ups.

Emery Goes Into Quiet Mode
by Paul on 11/08/07 at 03:57 PM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
The Senators goaltender instituted a new policy today of not speaking with his good friends in the media on game day as he prepares to start tonight against the Washington Capitals at Scotiabank Place.
Emery, making only his third start of the season, has to win tonight if he is going to have any chance of wresting the No. 1 job from goalie Martin Gerber, who has emerged as the club’s clear-cut top man in the net so far this season.
“I don’t care what (Emery’s) like to you guys (in the media),” said coach John Paddock this morning at the Senators’ game-day skate. “The people he’s responsible to are his teammates and the organization. You have a certain standard you have to live up to, but who says that has to be happy all the time ... It’s good to be surly.”

The Diplomatic Response
by Paul on 10/16/07 at 07:02 AM ET

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,
Ray Emery , the only goalie to take Ottawa to the Stanley Cup finals, is finally ready to return from wrist surgery and reclaim his No. 1 job.
Martin Gerber, who in 12 months has amazingly transformed his game from shaky to steady to sometimes spectacular, has zero interest in giving up the position he’s held since the season began.
Both men said all the right things yesterday. Both want to play, both are content to let the chips fall where they may, both want what’s best for the team.

Emery’s #1 Status In Doubt
by Paul on 10/10/07 at 03:44 PM ET

from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,
While it might appear Ray Emery is the odds-on favorite to regain the starter’s role once his wrist is healthy, there is every chance Martin Gerber will have used the time to stake a hold on the job that was his last season before he tanked it early in the year. In his first four games – all victories – Gerber has looked solid, if not outstanding.
There is no denying Emery saved the day last year. He picked up the ball when Gerber fumbled and carried it all the way to the Stanley Cup final.
But let us not forget, it wasn’t necessarily a smooth journey.

Emery Still Needs More Time

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Ray Emery doesn’t have an answer.
After taking part in his first full practice with the Senators yesterday at Scotiabank Place, Emery told reporters he’s not sure when he’ll be able to play, but doesn’t believe he’s ready yet.
“I’m just working hard at getting back right now. I obviously want to get some games in, but I’ve got to make sure that I’m not going to get hurt when I get in there,” said Emery. “I’m close, but I’m not where I want to be as far as playing a game. It’s kind of frustrating for me right now, but I’ll get in there.”

Emery Hopes To Play In 2-3 Exhibition Games
by Paul on 09/12/07 at 06:17 AM ET

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,
His recovery remains on schedule, he said, and a consultation with the doctor isn’t necessary. Emery will get input from athletic therapist Gerry Townend and team doctors before deciding when to go full out.
“(There’s) no setback. I know where I’m at. Things are going well. I’m getting stronger. I’m getting mobility back. There’s still some discomfort and it’s still not at the point where I think I should go all out yet,” he said.
“I want to be really strong so even if that means taking a couple more days (off), whatever the best way is to go about it, I’ll do that after I talk to Gerry and the coach and get everyone’s input on things. I know when I’m ready….”

Emery About To Face Lawsuit
by Paul on 09/07/07 at 06:46 AM ET

fromm Sun Media,
Jean Therien says he feared for his life as the white Hummer he had accidentally cut off on the freeway Wednesday morning began jerking into his lane, forcing him to swerve to avoid it.
He says his heart raced when the Hummer stopped in front of him on an off- ramp and an enraged Ottawa Senators goalie Ray Emery got out of the truck and approached his car, yelling at him through the passenger side window.
“He started calling me ‘You f—-ing old bag of bones, you f—-ing sh—’,” said Therien, 65. “He said, ‘You tried to put me in the ditch.’ I said, ‘No. I did not.’ “
