NHL Officials Make a New Fashion Statement

New officials’ uniforms from Reebok to be unveiled at the All Star Game in Montreal this weekend. From Market Watch:
Features on the officials’ uniforms include stretch mesh in the underarm and back of the jerseys, a zipper-less neckline, numbers on the back and sleeve and an enhanced Referee arm bar design to allow for greater on-ice visibility. The uniform also features a microphone channel that allows the officials to maneuver seamlessly across the ice with their microphones securely fastened to them.

“Scampy” to the Hall of Fame

Scapinello will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 10 for his body of work, which included 2,500 regular-season games and 426 playoff games, all consecutive, as he never missed a game between 1971 and 2004. He was called the best linesman in the game in 20 of his 33 seasons; he worked 20 Stanley Cup Finals and three All-Star Games. He also worked the 1998 Winter Olympics. But according to Morel, Scapinello was one of those guys who made training camp fun.
“He juggled, he was pretty good,” said Morel. “He was pretty agile. He was good on a one-wheeled bike. Sometimes he brought that to training camp and show us what he did during that summer to practice that balance and it was OK.”

Referee Dan O’Halloran’s Story

During the playoffs, we often talk about the sacrifices players make to reach the Stanley Cup finals; the commitment, the good fortune. NHL officials are no different. This series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings represents their ultimate competition. Only the best of the best are chosen to call these games. This is their Stanley Cup as much as it is the players’.
So, every day, when O’Halloran steps out of the shower and notes the meandering scar that runs from his stomach around to his back, he is doubly thankful to be here, not just professionally, but at all.
“You wonder about karma sometimes,” the 44-year-old O’Halloran told ESPN.com this week. “March 13, 1983 was the day I was shot. So that’s why I wear No. 13.”

Retiring the Stripes

Dumb like a fox, McGeough is deep into overtime now, with only about a month left in an 20-year National Hockey League career. The result, one might say, is like a flying tub of popcorn aimed at him from the stands: He left it all on the ice.
“He’s kind of a like the villain in All Star Wrestling. The kind of guy the fans love to hate,” said Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish, who was once fined $10,000 for describing McGeough’s work as “spastic” and “retarded.”
McGeough, 50, burned an indelible image into the memories of hockey fans: For much of his career he was the helmetless, portly zebra coming out from behind the net, waving his arms in a frantic negation of a goal. One foot is on the ice, the other - for some unknown reason - raised in the air in front of him.

Pair Up the Refs

You can always talk about the officiating or never talk about the officiating. [Generally,] On the Fly prefers to do the latter. But with the bleating amped up this season, at least to our ears, maybe it is time for the NHL to reconsider how it forms its officiating duos.
If consistency is as much of a problem as players contend, the solution should be obvious: next season, with the influx of new referees having adjusted to the league three full years after the lockout, director of officiating Stephen Walkom should form pairs, based on style and personality, and keep them together for the duration of the schedule.

Goal Judges Get a New Perch

Amusement park rides aren’t nearly as scary as the upper reaches of Pengrowth Saddledome, home of the Calgary Flames, which is why news that the team’s goal judges would be stationed in the thin air of the catwalk sounded like a bad joke.
So, Pluto was unavailable? Maybe they’re planning on playing U2’s “Vertigo” when a goal is scored. And just an idle thought, will these goal judges be given high-powered binoculars along with their official blazers at Thursday’s home opener? “It almost sounds laughable,” agreed Flames public relations assistant Sean Kelso.
Not now.

No Namby-Pamby Refs In The NHL

Though there are penalties in ice hockey, for high-sticking, for holding and holding the stick, there are no penalties for body checking your opponents at full speed, into a wall. Indeed, that kind of behaviour is rapturously applauded by knowledgeable fans. Such fans will need no explanation of the finer points of the game. Which is just as well. This is a sport of speed, power and violence, played without the inconveniences of offside or touchlines or namby-pamby referees. Indeed, ice hockey referees may well be the least namby-pamby officials in the sports world, since four of them must not only share the ice with two teams of aggressive hulks, but sort out the game’s near obligatory brawl.
There was one of those last night, and highly entertaining it was too. The fight ended as an honourable draw, with one player from each side sitting out a five-minute penalty.
