DiPietro Faces Live Shooters Who Were Actually Trying To Score

from Katie Strang of Isles Files,

There is no timetable for Rick DiPietro to come back for an NHL game, but he is watching the clock. And he was pleased that his workout with six skaters at Islanders practice today represented the longest he has been on the ice in a live workout during his rehab.
He was encouraged, and demanding of himself. It was a step forward for him, seeing “live” shots from skaters who were really trying to score. At one point, they did breakaways. At another all six were on various spots on the ice, taking turns firing shots at him. He did quite well in turning them away.

Islanders Forgot About DiPietro At Home Opener

via Katie Strang of Isles Files at Newsday,

First and foremost, Rick DiPietro absolutely did not decline to be a part of last night’s introduction ceremony.

Essentially, it was an oversight and here’s what Islanders President Chris Dey had to say on the matter:

“We made a mistake and left Rick out of the introductions. It was nothing intentional, but we are glad to hear that fans wanted to hear him introduced by the team,” Dey said. “We are all looking forward to his return to the lineup.”

Controlled Practice For DiPietro

via Dan Martin of the NY Post,

“Next week he should be able to ramp up his workouts on the ice,” Gordon said after the team worked out in Syosset yesterday. “It’s working on more technique. Everything is pretty controlled right now, the next step is to make it more game-like . . . moving off passes, multiple shots, recoveries, everything that would come up in the course of a normal practice, but do it in a controlled environment.”

DiPietro is trying to be patient.

“I’m obviously frustrated,” the goalie said. “I’d like to be on the ice right now, skating with the team and have a regular training camp and not have to worry about being injured and rehab every day. But this is part of the bigger picture.”

DiPietro Still Can’t Skate

from Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank,

Despite repeated declarations by Islanders management that Rick DiPietro would resume skating this month, Point Blank has learned that the all-star goaltender has not begun regular on-ice workouts as of today.

Point Blank has also learned that DiPietro has yet to receive clearance from the Islanders’ medical staff to begin light practices. Projections made by this blog over a month ago seem more in line with reality for the rehabilitating goaltender.

DiPietro Gone for the Rest of the Season

From TSN:

The Islanders announced on Tuesday that knee issues will sideline goalie Rick DiPietro for the rest of the season.

DiPietro, who has only played in five games this season, has had three operations in the past year, including hip surgery in March and arthroscopic knee surgery in October to repair a torn meniscus.

Is DiPietro Done For The Year?

from Greg Logan of On the Islanders Beat,

In the surest sign yet that the Islanders might be close to shutting down goaltender Rick DiPietro for the season after just five starts, general manager Garth Snow said the team has held exploratory talks with the agent for former Isles goaltender Wade Dubielewicz, who recently was bought out of his contract with Ak Bars Kazan of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League....

Told that Dubielewicz is talking to at least three NHL teams with goaltender problems, Snow said, “I guess we’re one of the three. We have to see what happens with Rick first before we do anything.”

Knee Swelling Still Bothering DiPietro

from Greg Logan of On the Islanders Beat,

Five days after the Islanders returned home from their Western Conference road trip and there’s still no update on the condition of goaltender Rick DiPietro’s surgically repaired knee. There’s a good reason for that.

Indications are that DiPietro is traveling to visit specialists who might be able to determine why the knee still is swelling and hasn’t responded well to the latest surgery performed on Halloween.

Swollen Knee Cancels DiPietro Start Tonight

from Greg Logan of On the Islanders Beat,

Swelling in Rick DiPietro’s surgically repaired knee prompted the Islanders to cancel his expected start tonight in Calgary, coach Scott Gordon explained after the pre-game skate today at the Pengrowth Saddledome. When DiPietro returns to Long Island with the team after tonight’s game, his condition will be “reevaluated."…

Asked if he has any idea how long the uncertainty surrounding DiPietro’s availability will go on, Gordon said, “No, like I said, he could have played all three games [so far on the road trip]. That’s why he’s been here and we haven’t done anything else.

“But it hasn’t made the progress that was to be expected, so, rather than just throw him in there, knowing that he’s medically cleared to play, we just figured we’ll hold off and get him back to New York and reevaluate and go from there.”

DiPietro Now Out With Groin Strain

from Greg Logan of On the Islanders Beat,

One game into his comeback from a second knee operation in a span of five months, Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro is hurt again. He took part in the pre-game skate today at Madison Square Garden but will miss tonight’s game against the Rangers with a strained groin.

DiPietro Itching To Get Back On The Ice

from Dan Martin of the NY Post,

In spite of his problems staying on the ice, DiPietro doesn’t intend to change his playing style when he does return.

“I don’t think I will ever let that affect the way I play,” DiPietro said. “That might be part of the problem.”

He said that with somewhat of a rueful laugh, knowing his injury woes have kept the Isles wallowing near the bottom of the league, despite their recent success. He insists that won’t be for long and that they won’t end up regretting his epic contract.

“I’ve had a lot of bad luck, which [stinks],” DiPietro said. “But in the long run, it’s going to work out. There’s absolutely no question that my goal since signing that deal was to win here, and everyone here wants to win the Stanley Cup. I think we’re taking the right steps.”

Dealing With DiPietro

from Greg Logan at On the Islanders Beat,

The Islanders have done their best to shroud the issues surrounding goaltender Rick DiPietro’s health in mystery, obfuscation and misdirection. They issued a statement last night that was like a skeleton picked clean of any meat by buzzards.

“Lower body injury”… “unrelated to previous injuries”…“day-to-day pending assessment and treatment.”

I’d ask them to define what they mean by “unrelated to previous injuries,” but trying to get a straight answer is like trying to see Major Major in “Catch-22.” You only can go in to see him when he’s out.

What Is Going On Here

from Greg Logan of On the Islanders Beat,

...when I asked Bill Guerin if the Isles were inspired to play harder in the second and third periods as a response to losing DiPietro because of an injury, he said, “I wasn’t aware of an injury.”

From that statement, I only can deduce that, if the Islanders didn’t know DiPietro was injured, then, they assumed he was pulled for the bonehead play. If that had been the case, it would have sent a message that Gordon isn’t afraid to discipline his star player for careless or selfish mistakes.

But when Gordon and DiPietro both attributed the decision to switch to MacDonald to an injury while refusing to specify the nature of said injury, when it occurred and how long it might affect the starting goaltender, the message was mixed and invited speculation. Gordon and DiPietro both expressed some discomfort about discussing the subject, which only added to the doubt about what really happened.

The DiPietro Watch

from Greg Logan of Newsday,

“There’s going to come a point where we say, ‘It’s time to give it a test,’” Gordon said. “If [Saturday’s] the game, great. If not, then we’ll shoot for Thursday.”

As for DiPietro, he’s ready to play as soon as Gordon and the training staff give the go-ahead. “I’ve been doing whatever I can to get ready and get healthy, and I’m going to approach it like I’ve approached the last five days,” DiPietro said. “I’ll see how I feel [this] morning and go from there.”

DiPietro Feeling Good

from Mark Hermann of On the Islanders Beat,

DiPietro said he felt good, having been the one in net when the Islanders did all their full-team drills at one end of the ice (Joey MacDonald worked on his own with a coach at the other end). Put it this way, if DiPietro does not play against the Lightning tomorrow night, he will play soon.

He added that he just couldn’t describe how anxious he has been to get in a game, and that the hardest part is balancing the knowledge that there is a lot of season left with his desire to get his season started. But he sees the reasoning in making sure that once he gets in there, he can stay in there.

Why Dress DiPietro

from Arthur Staple of Newsday,

So Gordon decided to sit franchise goaltender Rick DiPietro for a second straight night, though he claimed that DiPietro and his surgically repaired left knee were “capable of playing.”

“As I said [Friday], we could play him these first three games and then go to Florida and he could be out a month,” the coach said. “If we’re 0-3 after these three games and he’s better prepared to play in Florida, then he’s better off.”

It’s hard to see the logic in that, especially with the sight of DiPietro sitting in full uniform as the backup.

DiPietro Has Swelling Around Repaired Knee

From TSN,

The New York Islanders received some unwanted news just one game into the new season as the team learned that goaltender Rick DiPietro has swelling and fluid around his surgically repaired left knee.

The 27-year old DiPietro was expected to start Friday’s opener against the New Jersey Devils, but was a surprise late scratch as Joey MacDonald took his place between the pipes, making 27 saves in a shootout loss.

DiPietro, who has been plagued by knee injuries throughout his career, underwent meniscus surgery in June and played in only one of the Islanders pre-season games.

DiPietro Plans To Be 100% By Opening Of The Season

from Katie Strang of On the Islanders Beat at Newsday,

Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro said he’s had a slow summer while rehabbing his left knee, but one particular date has kept him motivated and focused—the season opener against the Devils.

“I’m not so worried about being 100 percent for training camp, I’m more worried about being ready October 10,” DiPietro said at an interview and autograph session in Manhattan Wednesday. “I’m really optimistic and hellbent on being there for the first game.”

Updated Reports: DiPietro’s Season Over

From Greg Logan at Newsday,

The organization has decided to send goaltender Rick DiPietro for an MRI examination Tuesday of the hip injury he suffered in the All-Star Game skills competition on Jan. 26.

Islanders coach Ted Nolan acknowledged DiPietro’s absence from the lineup at the morning skate Tuesday and said results of the MRI will be evaluated Wednesday.

“He’s been having it for a while,” Nolan said of DiPietro’s hip injury. “It’s the same as our team. We have nine guys out of the lineup, and we have two guys that probably shouldn’t be playing (Tuesday night). It’s one of those things where the injury bug hit us, and unfortunately, it hit Ricky.”

Update 11:11pm ET: From TSN

It looks as though Rick DiPietro’s season is over.

Sources tell TSN the New York Islander goaltender has a right hip problem that is going to require surgery. The decision was made after DiPietro underwent an MRI today. It’s expected the surgery could be performed as early as Wednesday.

Update 11:54pm ET: Greg Logan at Newsday --

For the second time in two seasons, Islanders franchise goaltender Rick DiPietro will have season-ending hip surgery. The operation will take place Wednesday at Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., an NHL source said, and DiPietro is expected to recover in time for training camp in September.

Listen To Your Coach Rick

from Greg Logan of Newsday,

The situation between Nolan and his goaltender undoubtedly is the most sensitive right now. Michel Ouellet scored Tampa Bay’s first goal at 6:51 of the first period after DiPietro went behind his net to play the puck and gave it away to Jeff Halpern, who fed Ouellet for a shot on the open net.

“We ask him over and over again not to play the puck as much,” Nolan said of DiPietro. “He’s one of the best puck-handlers in the league, but you just can’t overhandle it. When you overhandle it, you get yourself in trouble a little bit."…

Showing his frustration, Nolan said of DiPietro: “The only thing you can do is keep going through it over and over again. You can’t do that. You’ve got to let our defense handle it a little bit more. He just wants to play it. What can you do?”

Back To DiPietro

from On the Islanders Beat at Newsday,

DiPietro’s mediocre stats since the All-Star break suggested he needed an extended rest to refresh mind and body. He made 14 straight starts until the unfortunate death of his grandmother necessarily forced him to take time off to grieve with his family and to attend the wake and the funeral.

The way it works out now, DiPietro will have had a full week off plus two full practices and a pre-game skate to work out the kinks before he returns to net tomorrow night in Philadelphia. And to listen to Nolan after the Rangers loss, the last 13 games belong to DiPietro, barring injury or poor performance.

“Now, he’s got two practices,” Nolan said, including today’s session, “and he’ll run with it from here on in.”

Report: NHL Told DiPietro to Change Pads

original report posted 12:14am ET January 4th

From TSN via CTV,

Sources tell TSN that the NHL asked New York Islanders netminder Rick DiPietro to change his pads during the first intermission of Thursday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers at Nassau Coliseum.  DiPietro played the first period in new white Itech leg pads, then returned for the second period wearing his old orange and blue pads.

NHL’s executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, Colin Campbell and Islanders general manager Garth Snow are believed to have discussed the situation after DiPietro was ordered to change his pads. The two are expected to further discuss the matter on Friday.

Update Jan 4, 6:25pmET: From TSN,

The National Hockey Leagues Hockey Operations department received and inspected New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro’s goalie pads Friday afternoon, and upon further review declared the pads legal.

Ordinarily, all new goalie equipment is cleared through Hockey Operations before its delievered to the teams. DiPietro was forced to remove the pads in question following the first period of Thursday’s game against the Florida Panthers because the NHL had no way of confirming the pads were, in fact, legal.

New York Fight Night

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

To Rick DiPietro, it was simply a matter of “the intensity being ratcheted up against the Rangers, no matter where or when we play them.”

To Al Montoya, it was simply a matter of, “basically not really having a choice, but sticking up for my teammates even though I’d rather have been in the [game] to showcase my talents.”

DiPietro Takes On Leadership Role

from Newsday,

As he approaches his 26th birthday Wednesday, DiPietro acknowledged he’s also trying to do more to control his impulsiveness in the locker room in an effort to demonstrate more leadership.

“I definitely want to become someone the guys can rely on and count on for support,” DiPietro said. “I’m a competitive person, and I have a tendency to have a short fuse with guys sometimes. That’s something, as a leader, that you just can’t do....”
