All Ryan Malone

from Erin Chenderlin at the Tampa Bay Lightning website,

TBL.com: The Penguins, in just three seasons, went from last in the East in 05-06 to Conference champions this past season. Do you feel the Lightning are on the brink of doing something similar?

RM: I think the East is so close, if you really have a top power play and your special teams are good, those are some big things that can really carry your team. Obviously you need solid goaltending and I think [Mike] Smith and [Olaf] Kolzig are great goaltenders. Like I said earlier, those big pieces are there and they’re bringing in experienced players, so it’s not quite like Pittsburgh where they’re starting out young, but they’re bringing in guys that know how to win and want to win.

Malone & Roberts Officially Signed by Lightning

From TSN,

Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts are officially members of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and defenceman Dan Boyle might be the player in the team’s cross-hairs.

Malone has agreed to a seven year, $31.5 million contract, while Roberts agreed to terms on a one year contract that pays him a base salary of $1.25 million plus $10,000 for every game that he plays in the 2008-09 NHL regular season. So if Roberts were to play in all 82 games, he would earn $820,000 in bonuses, which could make his total income for the season $2.07 million.

Report- Bolts Sign Malone and Roberts

via Sportsnet,

A day after trading for their rights, The Tampa Bay Lightning are close to signing Ryan Malone to a long-term year deal that will exceed $30 million and Gary Roberts to a one-year year deal that has the potential to reach $2 million, Sportsnet has learned.

An announcement could come as early as Monday.

Update 3:57pm ET (alanah): From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail,

...and one source, who doesn’t represent either players, but was monitoring the situation, predicted deals would get done for both players before noon on July 1, when they would otherwise hit the open market.

And Erik Erlendsson of The Tampa Tribune is also monitoring the situation on his blog.

Update 4:30pm ET: From Damian Cristodero at Lightning Strikes,

If things keep going at the current pace, the Lightning could announce contracts for both Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts by later today. If that happens, give the Lightning credit for turning a tide that, for a while, seemed to be going against it.

Update 6:39pm ET: Again, from Damian Cristodero,

Mike Liut, the agent for left wing Ryan Malone, said his client has not signed a contract but a deal with the Lightning “is going to get done. ... I think we’ll finish it today.” That doesn’t mean it will be announced today, of course.

Update 9:29pm ET: The deal is signed, says TSN. Their headline currently reads, “MALONE INKS SEVEN YEAR DEAL WITH LIGHTNING”

Ryan Malone has agreed to a seven year, $31.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Malone, who would have drawn considerable interest from around the NHL as an unrestricted free agent, will earn between $7 and $8 million in each of the first two years of the deal.

Family Affair

from Aaron Portzline at Puck-rakers,

NHL sources told me on Saturday night that Malone’s father, Greg Malone, has recently been offered a job with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Malone had been working as a scout with the Phoenix Coyotes. Before that, he was a scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins. While he wasn’t fired by the Penguins a few years ago, he was shown the door by management, which is where the relationship between Malone and club became frayed. Now, they could be reunited.

Malone Talk

Nick Kypreos was just on Fan590 in Toronto and stated Ryan Malone has been telling people that Columbus, along with Toronto is one of the teams he does not want to play for.  Nick feels Columbus is just trying to show an effort to sign a player.

Take it as you wish....

added 9:29pm, As a KK reader pointed out in the comments,

Left wing Ryan Malone said Tuesday he plans to opt for free agency—a significant blow to the Penguins’ chances of trading him for a pick in this weekend’s NHL Entry Draft.

“We will not talk to anyone until July 1,” said Malone, who will become an unrestricted free agent on that date.

Malone Rights May Be Headed To Columbus

from Aaron Portzline of the Dispatch,

After months of planning and strategy, the Blue Jackets’ summer of significant change is nearing the launch pad.

A trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the negotiating rights to winger Ryan Malone could be struck today or, more likely, Wednesday, NHL sources told The Dispatch

Ryan Malone Update

From Aaron Portzline at Puck-rakers,

Ryan Malone is not going to sign with the Pittsburgh Penguins, unless the Penguins significantly up their offer. It’s looking more and more like the Penguins will get Evgeni Malkin signed to a contract extension and be able to keep right winger Marian Hossa. That will show Malone to the door.

An NHL source said that Malone has been low-balled twice by the Penguins and is ready to leave July 1 as an unrestricted free agent. Malone’s rights could be traded before that day, of course, and the Blue Jackets are a likely destination.

The source said the Penguins have already made the Blue Jackets an offer for Malone’s rights.

Penguins/CBJ Trade Talk

From Aaron Portzline at Puck-rakers in the Columbus Dispatch,

The Pittsburgh Penguins won’t be able to keep their Stanley Cup runner-up club together because of salary cap issues. It looks like the Blue Jackets are prepared to offer a helping hand.

The two clubs have had preliminary trade talks, the Dispatch has learned. The discussions have involved Pittsburgh trading the rights to one or two of their pending unrestricted free agents—players the Penguins have decided they can’t keep because of the salary cap—to the Blue Jackets for draft pick or player compensation.

It’s unclear who the players are, but Ryan Malone and Brooks Orpik seem like logical choices.

Malone Takes the Breaks in Stride

From David Shoalts at the Globe & Mail,

“Anyone else in this room would be doing the same thing,” [Ryan] Malone said. “I’m definitely thankful. A broken nose, swollen lip and some chipped teeth are a pretty good scenario for a puck in the face. I look at it as you never know when you’re going to be back in the Stanley Cup final, so you have to do everything you can to help out.”

Actually, Malone’s nose was already broken before Gill’s shot hit him. Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall did that in the first game when he flattened Malone with a bone-rattling body check. When Gill’s shot broke it again, it was practically old hat.

“Yeah, you can get drilled a lot,” Malone said. “You’re standing in front of the net. That’s my job. On the power play, I’ll be back there again.”

Whodunnit?

From the LA Times,

The Penguins got a rude awakening at their Detroit-area hotel when a fire alarm went off about 1:30 a.m. Monday.

“It was kind of annoying,” forward Tyler Kennedy said. “I just stayed in bed. Worse comes to worse, I’d just jump out the window.”

Kennedy said hotel employees confirmed that it was a false alarm.

“They came out and said it was just someone fooling around,” he said. “Probably was a Red Wings fan.”

Ryan Malone Today

Ryan Malone participated in an NHL tele-conference today…

Q. Could you sit back and look at the big picture, where this franchise and team was about 15 months ago when it looked like the team might possibly move, the arena deal was difficult to negotiate. Nervous time for everyone in Pittsburgh. 15 months later you’re in the Stanley Cup final, sold out every game, a new rink on the way. Has that been kind of a fun but nervous ride?

RYAN MALONE: A little bit. I think especially being from Pittsburgh, even being with the team early on, when you heard all the rumors about we might be moving, I think deep down inside with the fan support we had at the time, it was great, so it would have been tough to leave such a good hockey town with the support we were receiving at the time.

I think deep down inside we knew we weren’t really going anywhere. For some reason, people were dragging their feet, finally got the rink deal done. It would have been crazy to think at the end of this year we would be going somewhere else.

Definitely great to see. I think you really have to thank the fans for the way they supported us. Had big rallies during that time to make sure we knew they were supporting us. It was great.

Greg Malone: More Than Just Ryan’s Dad to the Pens

From Dan Rosen at NHL.com,

If you search hard enough, you’ll still find Greg Malone’s name in the Pittsburgh Penguins media guide. He’s listed in Ryan Malone’s bio as the forward’s father, and in other places showing his season and career stats as a Penguins’ center from 1976-83.

But Greg Malone’s present value to these Penguins extends way beyond any miniscule mention in a media guide. Even though his job title now refers to him as a professional scout for the Phoenix Coyotes, Malone was one of the architects who put together the team that will represent the Eastern Conference in the 2008 Stanley Cup Final starting Saturday [...]

As the Penguins’ head scout from 1990-2006, Malone was at the forefront of every Penguins draft, meaning he had his hand in selecting 11 of the 20 players that should dress for Game 1 against the Detroit Red Wings Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.

Growing Up with the Pens

From Pierre LeBrun at the CP via Yahoo! Sports,

Malone’s father Greg also played for the Penguins, which is why Ryan grew up in Pittsburgh. Greg Malone, a New Brunswick native, also played for Quebec and Hartford and is now a scout for the Phoenix Coyotes after many years as a Penguins scout.

So not only did Ryan Malone grow up a Penguins fan, he literally grew up hanging around the team. “You definitely feel lucky,” Malone said. “I would have happily played anywhere but it’s an extra bonus to play for the team I grew up with. I’m privileged.”

Just how long he’ll be wearing that uniform remains to be seen. He’s an unrestricted free agent July 1 and his career-best season, 27 goals and 51 points, would fetch him a handsome raise over the US$1.45 million he made this season. Perhaps as much as $4.5 million on the open market. That will likely be too much money for a Penguins team that is looking to get star centre Evgeni Malkin to sign a rich, new extension this summer…
