Same Miller, But Now Making More Money
by Paul on 12/11/08 at 11:54 AM ET

from Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News,
When Ryan Miller signed a five-year, $31.25 million extension during the offseason, his bank account soared. So did expectations. Miller was being paid like an elite NHL goalie, and now it was time for him to perform like one.
He hasn’t. Miller has been good at times, spectacular at others. But it’s hard to dispute the numbers, which suggest that Miller has been essentially the same player he was in his first three full seasons in Buffalo.

Ruff Says The Right Words
by Paul on 12/10/08 at 12:52 PM ET

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,
Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said today he was surprised when Ryan Miller told him that referee Tim Peel swore at the Buffalo goaltender during Monday night’s game in Pittsburgh.
“That would be unusual,” Ruff said following today’s morning skate. “The referees 99 percent of the time show a lot of class and they’re under a lot of duress. They take a lot of abuse, even to a point where they give players a lot of room.
“If this is just that rare occasion, it’s a rare occasion that happened. For the most part, they keep a great handle on it because they take the majority of abuse in the games.”
Calls for comment to Stephen Walkom, the NHL’s officiating supervisor, have not been returned.
“There is no Ryan Miller situation,” Frank Brown, the NHL’s vice president of communications, said in an e-mail to The Buffalo News today.

Hey Ref, Watch The Language

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,
At the end of a 5-1/2-minute session with reporters today in the Amherst Pepsi Center, Miller was asked about an end-of-practice chat with coach Lindy Ruff. The Buffalo goaltender revealed he was telling his coach that one of the officials swore at him during a stoppage in play a couple of minutes before the Sabres received a bench minor for arguing an interference call on Thomas Vanek.
“It was just about the referee last night, a brief conversation I had with the ref that was a little surprising to me,” Miller said. “He told me to “go [bleep] myself’ because I was just asking a question. I was just kind of joking around [to Ruff], saying, “Maybe that kind of started what got the bench minor going.’
“To be honest, I was respectful. I asked him a question and he told me maybe I should “go [bleep] myself.”

Miller Happy In Buffalo

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,
(Ryan) Miller looked around and realized everything he wanted in his career was right here. He was the No. 1 goalie for a team that had a taste of success and was starving for it again. He had built a network of friends, people he trusted away from hockey. He had earned his place within the community and was guaranteed to make a good buck.
Mostly, though, he saw the core of teammates with whom he had built a strong bond, a group that had blossomed and helped the Sabres reach the Eastern Conference finals two straight years, blood brothers who wanted to stay together. He wasn’t looking to leave Buffalo for Detroit. He wanted to find the Red Wings’ success with the Sabres.
“It didn’t really click for them until they became a cohesive unit,” Miller said.

Miller Signing Put Sabres Back In The Game
by Paul on 07/19/08 at 07:46 AM ET

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,
The contract extension was critical on many fronts. For once, it didn’t take the Sabres an hour to make minute rice. The deal was done 18 days after they were eligible to begin negotiations. There were no lowball offers, no botching of tentative agreements, no animosity, no jerking around a star player, no distractions.
It was a grand departure from business practices that led to Chris Drury and Daniel Briere bolting, Brian Campbell getting traded and the franchise landing on its ear. By golly, maybe they’ve finally learned their lesson.
Miller wanted to remain here. The Sabres showed they were committed to keeping him. Everybody’s satisfied.

via John Vogl of the Buffalo News,
NHL free agency begins in a matter of hours, but the Buffalo Sabres’ main focus is re-signing a player with a year left on his contract. General Manager Darcy Regier said today the team has begun preliminary contract talks with goaltender Ryan Miller.
“It’s early, but anytime we have conversations in that area it’s good,” Regier said.

It’s a Fine Line

From the National Post,
Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller, recently appointed to the NHL rules committee, said he will enter discussions about smaller goaltending equipment with an open mind.
“You have to walk a fine line,” Miller told the Buffalo News. “They’ve already trimmed it down once. I suffered for it from breaking my thumb (during the 2005-06 season). That situation wasn’t well thought out. They had dimensions and said, ‘Here, this should work.’ ”

Ryan Miller Blogs

Over at Maxim, Ryan Miller is blogging the playoffs in a weekly report. From today’s entry, he’s got a few thoughts to share on watching Avery the other night:
The NHL weighed in and will now interpret any actions like that as interference. Ya think? It is like when a kid is trying to annoy someone by getting as close as they can without actually touching them…the whole time yelling “I’m not touching you…I’m not touching you!” The best part is that it almost looks like Chris Drury skates over during the play to tell him to get in position. Haha.
more… *plus Miller is also doing a weekly appearance on Maxim Radio—Sirius Satellite Radio.

Miller Keeps On Playing
by Paul on 03/28/08 at 08:06 AM ET

from the Buffalo News,
Miller tied the Sabres’ single-season record for most appearances by a goaltender, guarding the net for the 72nd time to match Don Edwards (1977-78), Dominik Hasek (1997-98) and Martin Biron (2001-02). With five games left, Miller certainly will have the mark all to himself, probably as soon as tonight when the Sabres host Montreal in HSBC Arena.
“It’s just the coach tapped you on the shoulder,” Miller said in Scotiabank Place. “It wasn’t about setting a record or whatever. It’s just [coach] Lindy [Ruff] saying, ‘You got the start.’ It was definitely a learning experience for me.”

Miller Has Been Average
by Paul on 03/26/08 at 07:01 AM ET

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,
This isn’t meant to hang this loss solely on Miller. The Sabres needed a GPS to find the net until Derek Roy, the only player performing to the numbers in his contract, scored a couple goals to give the Sabres the 2-1 lead. Buffalo allowed a short-handed goal. Once again, the Sabres fell apart at home.
It’s all true, but when was the last time Miller won a game by himself?
He’s ranked 21st in goals-against average and 25th in save percentage this season. He made his 29th consecutive start Tuesday night.

Ryan Miller Should Play Tuesday
by Paul on 02/02/08 at 01:10 PM ET

from the Buffalo News,
The Buffalo Sabres are breathing easier today because goaltender Ryan Miller’s knee injury is not serious and he should play Tuesday night in Boston.
Miller, who did not come out for the third period of Friday’s 5-4 shootout loss in Atlanta, suffered a bruise to the right knee when he was hit by Atlanta’s Chris Thorburn late in the second period.
“It looks like Ryan will be OK,” coach Lindy Ruff said after this morning’s 40-minute practice in the Buffalo State Ice Arena. “I would expect him back at practice on Monday. We didn’t think it was too serious and that was confirmed. For sure, I would anticipate him playing on Tuesday.”

from David Amber at ESPN,
In this week’s Facing Off, the All-Star goalie tells us why he’s sick of talking about the departures of Chris Drury and Daniel Briere, what it was like watching his brother win the Stanley Cup last season and how he’s trying to make life better for cancer victims in his community.
Q: Is it hard to deal with (losing Drury & Briere)?
A: As a team, I’ve been trying to get rid of this built-in excuse that is kind of lingering over us. It can be a crutch to explain why we are losing. What it really comes down to is the guys in the locker room. We as a group need to step up and play. When I talk about those guys leaving, I think we need to move on. I still have a lot of respect for both of them. I learned a lot from them, even little things in practice. They are great leaders and have competitive spirits. I think having played with them will help me out in my career.

Vanek Feeling Pressure
by Paul on 11/09/07 at 08:09 AM ET

from the Buffalo News,
With the Sabres’ record at 6-7-1, it’s clearly become bothersome for Vanek. His coach has noticed, his teammates have noticed and so has anyone who’s been watching.
“Sometimes, his emotions are right out there for everyone to see how frustrated he is,” Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller said. “It’s going to be part of his maturing process. You can’t let the other team see that. There’s little talks with him, but I think that’s part of his personality. I’m kind of OK with him doing it. I think he plays his best hockey when he’s holding himself accountable. It’s just you don’t want to get to the point where you’re beating yourself up.”

Sabres Need To Change Their Gameplan
by Paul on 11/08/07 at 08:28 AM ET

from the Buffalo News,
That was the prevailing theme afterward. Everyone conceded that it’s a tougher, more defensive-minded league. The wide-open NHL, which was ideal for a small, speedy Sabres squad, has suddenly been transformed back into a tight-checking sport where unsightly, low-scoring games are the standard.
“Last year, everything we touched turned to gold on offense,” said goalie Ryan Miller, who had 25 saves. “This year, we’re going to have to work for it the way teams approach us. We have talent. We have the scoring touch. You’re just not going to get many good looks and you have to make them count.”

Ryan Miller’s Inspiration
by Alanah McGinley on 10/11/07 at 03:35 PM ET

From John Vogl at the Buffalo News,
Matt Schoals has served as an inspiration to Ryan Miller and to people who knew Schoals and his story. It’s clear death will not stop that.
Miller was detailing this week’s passing of his young cousin, grief and shock audible in his voice. But when talk turned to the mask of the Buffalo Sabres goaltender — the mask that Schoals helped design and serves as a constant reminder that there’s more to life than hockey games — Miller’s mood brightened. He laughed while recounting how the caricature of a bulldog came about, a sign that Schoals’ inspirational effect will not soon fade.
“He left a great legacy, and it’s only fair to talk about him and talk about the positive impact he had on the community,” Miller said Wednesday.
“He left the world, but he left having done great things.

Ryan Miller particpated in an NHL tele-conference today…
Q. Obviously you went through this before, and what advice will you give to your teammates about playing an outdoor game, particularly with regard to how do you prepare for the cold?
RYAN MILLER: The hype, you just kind of focus on playing the hockey game. What I experienced at Michigan State was how everyone went out there and no matter if they were a veteran, everyone was kind of acting like a rookie, just try and go out and go a million miles an hour.
I think that the best thing to do is just play your game and take in the experience, because it is a great chance to showcase hockey, and looking forward to it.
