Ryan Smyth will be out of the lineup for up to one month, Terry Murray said after practice today. Murray would not detail what Smyth’s “upper-body” injury is. As expected, Alexander Frolov will skate on the first line. Teddy Purcell will skate with Handzus and Simmonds.
Murray said Rob Scuderi continues to be day to day with his lower-body injury.

If you’re an L.A. Kings fan, there are a lot of good reasons to be pleased with the trade that brings former Avalanche and Oilers left winger Ryan Smyth to California. He’s someone who every player on that roster would be smart to emulate – in all areas except for hairstyling.
That brings me to an important question: How long is Smyth’s world-renowned mullet going to last in Southern California? Don’t they have laws there punishing crimes against hair? Isn’t he going to get tired of having scripts for Joe Dirt sequels offered to him day in and day out?

Ryan talks about his decision to waive his NMC and a few other topice with Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings,
Question: You talked about some of the discussion with your family. What were some of the factors you weighed?
SMYTH: “Obviously we have a beautiful home in Colorado, so we had to weigh the factors of all that stuff, and moving. Then you look at the hockey front. (The Avalanche) came to me and said they wanted to rebuild, and money was an issue, and obviously that goes hand in hand with my issue and my contract. It was mutual at the end of the day, and I have nothing but great things to say about Colorado.’’
Question: Playing in Colorado, you’ve had a chance to get a decent look at the Kings. What are your impressions?
SMYTH: “Watching these young kids play, and to see the energy and excitement and the direction the organization is going in, there’s nothing but upside. I’m honored to be a part of it and I hope I can contribute a lot.’’

The Colorado Avalanche have traded Ryan Smyth to the Los Angeles Kings.
The 33-year old posted 26 goals and 33 assists in 77 games last season.
Smyth spent most of the first 12 seasons of his career with the Oilers, but after failing to reach a contract agreement, was dealt to the New York Islanders at the trade deadline in 2007.
In that off-season he signed a five-year, $31.25 million deal with the Avalanche.

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has acquired defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing, along with a fifth round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forward Ryan Smyth. The trade is conditional upon the players passing a physical.
“We are pleased to be adding two quality NHL defensemen,” said Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman. “Kyle and Tom are both versatile players who can contribute at both ends. They will add defensive depth to our lineup.”

By the way, there has been a report that Alex Tanguay will re-sign with the Avalanche to replace Smyth. That will NOT happen. Tanguay is not coming back to the Avalanche, period.
My sources tell me Tanguay could be signing with the Phoenix Coyotes. But that is not a done deal at this point.

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that forward Ryan Smyth will miss the remainder of the 2008-09 season due to a fractured right hand.
Smyth suffered the injury during the second period of last night’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes at Pepsi Center. The Banff, Alberta native is the Avalanche’s leading scorer this season with 59 points (26g/33a) in 77 games.

How About Ryan Smyth To Vancouver?

The longer Ryan Smyth remains a Colorado Avalanche before Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline, the more plausible a case you can make for a trade to Vancouver. (Smyth has a no-trade clause, but hands up if you think “Captain Canada” would reject a back north).
Facing empty seats and a recession, Avalanche GM Francois Giguere needs to slash payroll, and Smyth is a huge ticket over the next three years: $16.5-million (all currency U.S.) with an annual cap hit of $6.25-million (read more on the Denver Post’s excellent Avs blog.
If Giguere requires pure return value for Smyth the Player, than there is no fit with the Canucks. But if Giguere just has to rid himself of Smyth the Contract, than Vancouver becomes a believable destination. (Smyth was traded from Edmonton exactly two years ago Wednesday. Since that deadline deal, the grass has not been greener.)

Smyth On The Trade Rumors

...another trading deadline is approaching — it’s on Wednesday — and Smyth’s name has been tossed out amid indications general manager Francois Giguere at least got the word out that he would at least listen to offers for Smyth. But Smyth has a no-trade clause in his contract, and Sunday he again said neither he not his agent, Don Meehan, had been asked about waiving it.
“It’s just rumors,” Smyth said. “That’s what happens this time of year. I’ve been fortunate enough to have that no-move clause in place, so right now it’s all speculation.”
He said he would be “surprised” if Giguere eventually asks him to waive the no-trade clause.

Pierre LeBrun and Scott Burnside of ESPN discuss the future of Ryan Smyth,
Pierre LeBrun: Smyth wasn’t too happy either when the rumors started this weekend. We exchanged text messages and he said he was “shocked.” After all, he signed his five-year deal with the thought of playing it out in Denver. It must be pointed out he’s in control with a no-movement clause and, at this point, a source tells me Avs GM Francois Giguere still hasn’t broached the subject of a possible deal with Smyth’s powerful agent Don Meehan. But given what other GMs have told me, Smyth is “possibly” available. I guess that’s a conversation that will soon take place.
Scott Burnside: Interesting dilemma for Smyth. He’s a terrific competitor and the Avs may not get anywhere near a playoff spot during the remainder of Smyth’s contract. Does he want to stay with a team that is finally paying the price for years of excess? And if he was willing to go, which team has the need, and wherewithal financially, to go after Smyth? Dallas has the need given its injuries up front, but hard to imagine the Stars taking on that kind of financial burden.

“It’s a little mind-boggling, obviously,” Smyth said this morning from the Verizon Center, where the Avs play the Washington Capitals tonight. “I’ve got three years left on my deal, and I really like it here. Obviously we’re not doing as well as we should be this year. We’ve lost a few key players who could really help us, but by no means are we out of this playoff race.”

“I had so many awful injuries,” Smyth told ESPN.com. “Once I got here last year, I just tried to get my feet wet and see where I fit in and adjust that way. I started feeling good, and all of a sudden, I started to get injured. Every time I felt like I was getting going again, I got injured and never really recuperated from it.”
(Smyth was out six weeks with a broken ankle and later missed more time when he suffered a concussion and minor shoulder separation from a Jack Johnson hit on March 1.)
And how does he feel now? “Awesome.”

Time For Smyth To Step Up

The Avalanche didn’t sign Ryan Smyth to a five-year, $31.25 million contract for him to be a third-liner.
But with Colorado in position to clinch a playoff spot tonight, when the Avs face the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place, that is what Smyth has been of late — a third-liner.
“Whatever Coach wants me to play, I’ll play,” Smyth said.
With 14 goals in 53 games in a season disrupted by a broken ankle and a shoulder injury, Smyth will likely have to be far more effective — and more often revert to his trademark gritty play around the net — if Colorado has any shot of getting out of the first round of the playoffs.

Ryan Smyth and Peter Forsberg were both kept out of the Colorado Avalanche’s lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.
Smyth skated effortlessly earlier in the day and showed no signs of the concussion and shoulder injury that forced him to miss five games. Forsberg, out with a strained groin, didn’t take the ice at all in the Avalanche’s morning skate.

When the Avs return to practice Thursday morning, they probably will be joined by their pricey left winger, Ryan Smyth.
Smyth, the team said Tuesday, is likely to return after making a speedy recovery from the scary hit he took March 1 in a game against Los Angeles. He suffered a concussion and slightly separated shoulder after being hit by Kings defenseman Jack Johnson into the turnbuckle near the Avs’ bench.

Bad News For Avs

The Colorado Avalanche took a dual hit on the injury front Monday.
The team learned that forward Ryan Smyth suffered a concussion after his collision with the padded partition near the Avalanche bench. He will not be able to exercise or return to the ice until he is symptom free. He also suffered a minor shoulder separation remains sidelined for an indefinite period of time.
The news got worse for Colorado as Marek Svatos was diagnosed with a torn ACL that will require surgery and sideline the forward for the remainder of the season.

Just sitting around here waiting for some official word from the Avs on Smyth’s scary injury from last night. But a person I talked to with some knowledge of the situation says Smyth’s left shoulder - not his head or neck - might be what causes him the most problems.

The Avs are going to announce soon that, while Smyth’s head and neck checked out well on CAT scans, the left shoulder is likely separated - but things will be officially known in the coming days.
Translation: he’s got a shoulder separation, at least. I’ve also been hearing about a possible broken collarbone - the most commonly broken bone in the human body.As for Svatos, the Avs are saying the full extent of his left knee injury will be known in the coming days.

Jack Johnson of the Kings rode Ryan Smyth into the boards, and his head met the glass partition that starts at the end of the bench.
Smyth was out cold but did come to and he was talking while being strapped down to a body board.

Despite word that Ryan Smyth will return to the Avalanche lineup tonight, Wednesday wasn’t a good day for medical news.
Workhorse defenseman Brett Clark might miss the rest of the season because of a dislocated shoulder, and Paul Stastny did not practice because of a groin injury.
Clark was the Avalanche’s minutes leader, and Stastny its leading scorer. Nothing seems to get any easier for the team already among the most banged-up in the NHL.

The fact is, the Avs embarrassed themselves over their latest injury news, regarding Ryan Smyth. The Avs put out the word that X-rays were negative on Smyth’s ankle. They get a sigh of relief from their fans. A day later, they said, ‘Uh, never mind, the ankle is actually broken. He’ll be out eight weeks.’

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that further medical evaluation on the injured right ankle of forward Ryan Smyth revealed a fracture and that he would be out approximately eight weeks.
“The fracture was discovered following additional medical tests which included an MRI exam,” said Avalanche Head Trainer Matthew Sokolowski. “We expect him to make a full recovery.”

Avs Waiting For Word On Smyth Injury

The Avalanche again will be at the mercy of a doctor’s prognosis today, when the condition of one of Ryan Smyth’s ankles will be determined. Early indications, however, are not good.
Smyth needed help from two Avalanche teammates to get from his locker stall to another room following Monday night’s 4-3 shootout loss to Phoenix.
If Smyth is out for an extended period of time, the Avs may need to start looking for some scoring help.

It’s hard to decide who is better in front of the goal crease—Detroit’s Tomas Holmstrom or Colorado’s Ryan Smyth.
Both grinders make their livings in the high-traffic areas where collisions abound and tempers flare, with goalies and defencemen trying in vain to move them.
“They’re the best in the world at it,” said Detroit general manager Ken Holland.

If you’re a hockey fan in the good ol’ USA, life can be pretty frustrating. (You already knew that, didn’t you?)
The latest example of that frustration came Tuesday night. I was eager to see Ryan Smyth’s return to Edmonton. In particular, I wanted to see the crowd reaction when he skated onto the ice as a member of the visiting Avalanche and I wanted to see the Oilers’ video tribute to their former star.
I didn’t get to see any of that.

Ryan Smyth, the former Edmonton Oiler, made good on his prediction Tuesday just before he faced off for the first time against his old team since his shocking trade eight months ago.
The mullet-haired left winger, now with the Colorado Avalanche, became teary-eyed as he lined up in pre-game ceremonies, watched a one-minute video tribute of his 11 seasons with the copper and blue, and received a 30-second standing ovation from the 16,839 fans at Rexall Place.
It wasn’t a weeper to rival the saddest of sports sob stories, “Brian’s Song,” but it had its moments.

“It was a nice tribute to me and my family by (the Oilers). It’s quite an honor to come back to the city where you started your NHL career and be recognized like I was tonight,” said Smyth, who went scoreless in the game. “The fans were great to me, and I really appreciate that.”

As for Smyth’s return on Tuesday, which figures to be an emotional night for both him and his former team, Staios said he hoped that Edmonton fans will take into consideration his years of service when deciding how to greet him.

Sillinger Talks Smyth & Islanders

On July 1, Mike Sillinger was as disappointed as anyone in the Islanders’ organization to learn that his friend Ryan Smyth had signed with Colorado rather than accept a slightly better offer from the Isles. As one of Smyth’s partners in a British Columbia real estate development and as alternate captain, Sillinger had pushed for “Captain Canada” to become “Captain Islander.”
“Even with me, he kept everything inside,” Sillinger said. “He kept his private stuff private between him and his family and his agent. I had no idea he was going to sign with Colorado. When he did sign, he told me the Islanders were one of his teams to the very end....”

Fighting Smyth

Choosing to fight Smyth, who is playing on the top line with Joe Sakic and Andrew Brunette, appeared inexcusable, like a Broncos defensive lineman trying to beat up quarterback Jay Cutler. It also appeared that Laperriere’s fight with Love was meant to send a message that you don’t mess with high-salary, skilled forwards like Smyth.
Afterward, the players presented a different picture. Turns out that Smyth, who signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract in July, picked the fight with Love, and Laperriere only fought Love to remind Smyth that he will be handling his dirty work.

Now that he’s a member of the Avalanche, having signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract on July 1, Smyth can set his sights on other targets.
“Well, hopefully I can be an Oiler killer,” Smyth said Thursday after undergoing medical and physical tests at the Pepsi Center, the first official day of training camp. “Some teams you play well against, some teams you don’t. I don’t know about impressions. You go out and play and perform and you try to do it every night, but it just so happened to work out against these guys.”
