The Next Goalie Guru

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

It’s getting pretty clear Sean Burke is emerging as per-haps the best goalie coach in the NHL in Phoenix. At the very least, he’s right near the top of the list.

His success working with Mike Smith has made everyone take notice this season, but when you look at what Ilya Bryzgalov was able to achieve in the desert and then see what happened to the poor fellow when he left and ventured into Philadelphia, you get a pretty good appreciation for what Burke has been able to accomplish with his players.

Both he and coach Dave Tippett originally targeted Smith when they learned Bryzgalov was leaving, Burke saying right from the outset that he thought the fellow could be among the top five goalies in the league in their first meeting after they picked him up.

“I came into it with a totally open mind and everything I looked at was positive,” said Burke of Smith, who virtually got Phoenix into the playoffs by himself and then won the first round for them over the Chicago Blackhawks. “I didn’t look at what he needed to change, I looked at a guy with an incredible amount of athletic ability, a guy with a good work ethic, experience, a guy who handles the puck better than anyone.

Life After Bryzgalov

From Emily Kaplan at NHL.com:

“Bryz is not exactly replaceable. We know that,” [Sean] Burke, Phoenix’s goaltending coach, told NHL.com. “So for us, this offseason was about trying to search for the type of goaltending that gives the opportunity to win every night.”

In Burke’s eyes, the Coyotes found that.

On July 1, Phoenix signed former Tampa Bay goalie Mike Smith to a two-year, $4 million contract. Burke describes Smith as “very big and very athletic”—and exactly what the Coyotes were looking for.

“I think we get a guy that has a lot of upside, but he also has a fair amount of experience and a lot of confidence,” Burke said. “Basically, I think we’re getting the perfect guy at the perfect time.”

Dave King Hired As Assistant Coach In Phoenix

Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic reports the Coyotes have hired Dave King as an assistant coach and confirms Sean Burke hired as goaltender coach.

added 3:27pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

In a year of incredible uncertainty for the franchise, and particularly their young emerging players, King is just what the Coyotes need at this stage – a teacher, first and foremost, someone who will help the Kyle Turrises and Mikael Boedkers of their world get better.

That’s just a smart business decision, no matter where the franchise might happen to land; no matter who may end up owning the team.
