Shane Doan Talks Handshake Line
by Paul on 05/25/12 at 01:05 AM ET
Comments (4)
from Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic,
Shane Doan feels sheepish, as he should.
But he wants to make something clear:
“I didn’t swear at him. I didn’t say anything rude or disrespectful,” Doan said of his postgame dust-up with Kings’ captain Dustin Brown. “I just wasn’t as cordial as I should’ve been.”
Alas, there were two endings to the Western Conference finals. The last was a disgrace. The first was a revelation.
First, the ugly: When the Coyotes’ captain and teammate Martin Hanzal turned the ceremonial handshake line into confrontational exchanges with Brown, they breached the NHL’s code of honor.
The handshake line is one of the sacred, quirky traditions that make the NHL special. It demands instant sportsmanship regardless of what just transpired. Circumstances don’t matter. That’s the whole point.
Doan said it wasn’t as bad as it looks. He claims Brown wanted to tell his side of the story, which only infuriated Doan even more.

“If [Coyotes forward] Raffi Torres gets 25 games for his hit during the play then this guy [Brown] ought to be done forever.”
-Mike Smith, goaltender for the Phoenix Coyotes.
“I bit my tongue the whole playoffs. I bit my tongue the whole time this series. I look back in the last two games and I still haven’t found where I got my three penalties. I have absolutely no idea where they came from or what they were calling.
“It’s hard because you don’t want to take anything away from L.A. They played unbelievable and give them all the credit. Uncle. Are you freaking kidding me? Uncle. I can’t understand how you miss that. You saw the game. It’s 5-on-3 and they give a penalty to even it up.
“The guy crosschecks Marty [Hanzal] twice in the back. He chips it over the boards, it goes over the boards and there’s no call? Marty gets a stick in the face and then the knee? I mean, come on. Like, come on.
“You don’t want to do it because I don’t want to take anything away from L.A. They played unbelievable and they beat us. Thank goodness their power play didn’t score on all those power plays they were handed. It could have been really ugly. They beat us. There’s nothing else to say about it.”

from Eric Goldschein of the Sports Grid,
Shane Doan was thrown out of tonight’s Coyotes-Kings game for a boarding call that made a bloody mess out of Trevor Lewis’ face. But was he the victim of what the NHL would consider a “flop”? The NBA knows all about flopping, but hockey players wouldn’t know how to fake an injury if they tried. Unfortunately, this looks to be the exception.

Shane Doan And Mike Fisher Cut From The Same Cloth
by Paul on 05/01/12 at 12:30 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Like Doan and his wife and family, Fisher’s faith is also a staple in his marriage to country music star Carrie Underwood. It was one of the initial draws when the two first met.
“That was a huge part of our relationship early on,” Fisher said. “She’s got a similar story to me in our journey and walking with the Lord. We both kind of learned through the teenage years and found what was really important and made it real for us. That was a big part of our relationship and obviously still is and of our marriage now.”
For Doan, a word that he repeats over and over is “genuine.” He said it six times during a 15-minute interview with ESPN.com. And it’s clear that perhaps what he’s trying to say is that a lot of athletes cite their faith but not all walk the walk.
“Too many times athletes and people want to think it’s what they should do, and they try to do it, but it’s not genuine,” Doan said. “God called on us to be real. He didn’t call on us to fake, he called on us to be real.”
That’s one thing Doan and Fisher will never be accused of—not being genuine.

Shane Doan Finally Gets To The Second Round
by Paul on 04/25/12 at 08:52 PM ET
Comments (6)
from the CP at The Hockey News,
And now that Doan has tasted playoff success, he wants more.
“Everyone always talks about if you get out of the first round, anything can happen,” Doan said. “Now we’ve got to find a way to win that next round and that’s really our next goal.”
As special as it was for Doan to get to the second round, those around him may have been more excited than he was.
Doan has been the consummate captain for the Coyotes, leading by example—he’s almost always the last player off the ice at practice, even optional skates—and by speaking up when it’s needed, either with words of encouragement or to light a spark under teammates.
Sure, he gets razzed all the time for Yosemite Sam-like bursts of anger—deeply religious, he doesn’t curse—and his aw-shucks nature, but everyone within the franchise respects him, the way he plays the game and the way he lives his life.
So when Doan flashed that face-engulfing smile after the win over the Blackhawks, the joy of accomplishment spread across the team.
“For a guy like Shane Doan to not get past the first round, that tells you how hard it is,” Coyotes goalie Mike Smith said after Game 6.

Shane Doan Ready To Return From Suspension
by Paul on 03/28/12 at 10:50 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic,
“Obviously you never want to be in the position I’m in right now with eight games to go and miss those three,” Doan said. “But it is what it is. It’s over. Now I have to get ready to go.”
Doan will return to the ice Thursday with his teammates when they host the current top dog in the Pacific Division, the San Jose Sharks, but he’ll be faced with a new challenge—how to remain a physical player and not get penalized for it.
“He obviously has to be aware of how he’s hitting people and where he’s hitting people, and hopefully him missing a couple games will tweak that memory in him,” coach Dave Tippett said. “But he still has to be a hard player. He’s not going to be the same player if he tip-toes around out there. I certainly don’t expect him to do that.”
Already this season, Doan has racked up 198 hits, which slots him 22nd in the league. Only four players with more goals than Doan have more hits, hinting that among goal-scorers Doan is of the toughest breed.
That picture paints an unusual dichotomy. Off the ice, he’s respected as one of the game’s finer leaders, a class act and humble man who spends his summers on a horse ranch in Alberta.
But in the past two seasons, Doan’s on-ice record reads two suspensions and a fine.

Doan’s Future Is Murky

from the CP at TSN,
The thought has at least crossed Shane Doan’s mind.
With the Phoenix Coyotes’ ownership situation still in limbo and unrestricted free agency staring him in the face, the veteran forward could be playing out his final season in the desert.
“Obviously, I’d be pretty naive to not think that way,” Doan said in a recent interview. “At the same time, everything is kind of focused on waiting to see how our team’s doing and what we’re doing and what’s going on with the ownership and different things. (I’ll) make a decision then I guess.
“But yeah, I’d be stupid not to be looking at (my options) and thinking about everything else.”
It’s the last place the 35-year-old wants to find himself in the twilight of his career.

Shane Doan Welcomes The Jets
by Paul on 10/14/11 at 09:55 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail,
Saskatchewan-born, Alberta-bred, B.C.-trained, Doan is as Western Canadian as canola and cowboy boots. He can’t forget where he came from because to do so would defy his DNA. He remembers what it was like to be 19 and playing in the NHL and admits that Saturday, when Phoenix plays host to Winnipeg for the first time in their twist-tied existence, there will be a tug at his heartstrings. “A surreal moment,” he says, knowing that at 35 he is the last Coyote with a link to the original Jets. “It was the team that gave me the incredible opportunity to play my first NHL game. I don’t take that lightly.”
But neither should his attachment to the Coyotes be dismissed. As their long-standing captain, Doan has had to address family members, teammates, Jobing.com arena workers even parking attendants on the on-going saga that has been the team’s quest for a new owner. Single-handedly, Doan has kept the flag flying, hopeful the Coyotes will stay where they are, where he feels comfortably at home.
“You look at Atlanta [whose Thrashers became the new Jets] and you’re almost jealous. It’s over and done with. We’ve had to deal with it for two, three years,” Doan says. “Last year, the hardest part was the playoffs. We’d made it and we were playing Detroit and on the day of the game it was announced when we’re beat out we’re going to be moving. Instead of feeling that incredible excitement, it stole the joy out of what we’d accomplished.

Doan Wants A Certain Edge To Coyotes Style Of Play
by Paul on 09/17/11 at 10:30 AM ET
Comments (8)
from Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic,
The Coyotes have played with an edge since Dave Tippett took over as coach two seasons ago.
This time, says captain Shane Doan, something a little extra has to be there to begin the process of erasing the bitter taste of a four-and-out first-round playoff exit last season against Detroit.
“I wasn’t too happy with the way it ended, I don’t think anybody was,” Doan said. “You’re embarrassed at the way that it ended last year. Hopefully, you kind of carry that chip on your shoulder forward and make it so that you do respond and that we do have a good start, and we’re ready to.”

Coyotes Want To Keep Doan Around
by Paul on 08/18/11 at 04:27 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,
Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said he wants to sit down and discuss a new contract with captain Shane Doan before training camp begins.
“I would like to start dialogue to see where he is at, and what he is thinking,” Maloney said. “He is certainly a guy we would like to re-sign, and I would rather do it now and not next June 30.”
Doan, 34, has played his entire career with the Coyotes organization, dating to when the team was still located in Winnipeg. He moved with the team to Phoenix in 1996-97.
“He lives and dies with the Coyotes as much anyone,” Maloney said. “He’s important to us.”

Shane Doan in a Familiar Situation
by Alanah McGinley on 04/21/11 at 01:44 PM ET
Comments (4)
From Bob McManaman at the Arizona Republic:
History has a funny way of repeating itself and on Wednesday night, in front of a “white out” crowd at Jobing.com Arena - much as it was 15 years ago in Winnipeg - the Coyotes might have played their last game in Arizona.
Again, it was Detroit that ended their season. This time, it was a series sweep punctuated by a 6-3 victory in a bitter Game 4 before a sellout crowd of 17,314.
“Nobody likes to leave their home, ever,” Doan said after the game. “Fifteen years ago, it was an emotional time to leave. When you’re told to leave your home, it’s always difficult.”
The only difference is, back then the Jets and their fans knew it was coming. The relocation to Phoenix was a done deal before the playoffs even began in 1996.
This time, there is nothing but uncertainty.

from the CP,
Shane Doan can add something else to his resume. The Phoenix Coyotes captain beat the “Mantracker.”
Doan, 34, and his 23-year-old brother Brook survived a manhunt on “Mantracker” television show.
On the episode that aired Sunday night, the start of Season 6 of the OLN show, the Doans had to elude “Mantracker” Terry Grant and local hunting guide Russ Floyd in B.C.‘s southern Chilcotin Mountains.
Equipped with a compass and a map, the brothers had to get to the finish point some 37 kilometres away without being caught.

“I think Detroit has so much skill, you have to be physical against them. You can give them time with the puck or they have players that will make you pay. It’s not like it’s a big secret how you want to play against them. And I think we have the personnel and the system that can be successful.”

A Little Help Please
by Paul on 12/09/10 at 08:44 AM ET

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,
Doan’s leadership is unquestionably crucial to the team’s success. His poise and composure during the team’s bankruptcy saga seemed to have a trickle-down effect in the dressing room. He is the man you hope your son becomes. He’s principled, dependable, fair-minded and family-oriented. He’s tough in the right way.
“If Shane produces in the 15- to 25-goal, and 35- to 50-point range and brings the many intangibles we require, we will be more than happy,” Maloney said.
Doan, 34, should always have the intangibles covered because that’s how he lives his life, but he has more work to do to get his numbers in shape. Because of a three-game suspension for a blindside hit and an injury, Doan has missed 10 games this season. But if you look at numbers for the 16 games he has played, he’s only on pace to net 10 goals. His plus-minus of minus-5 is the worst among Phoenix forwards.

Doan Nailed It

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
I bring you back to an August conversation I had with Shane Doan. The Phoenix Coyotes captain was insisting anyone picking his team to be brutal this season was making a big mistake.
“As bad as everything you hear about us, we just don’t think we’re that bad,” Doan told me six months ago. “We don’t think we’re the worst team in the league even though everybody seems to be picking us to finish last.”
Fast forward to late Thursday night. Doan was about to board a plane in South Florida with the Coyotes a few hours after erasing a three-goal, third-period deficit to beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 in a shootout. The victory set the all-time Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise record for wins in a season with 44.
Just another day at the office for the team everyone wrote off before the season.
I mentioned our August conversation and Doan laughed.

Doan Doesn’t Complain, He Just Goes To Work
by Paul on 01/08/10 at 09:55 AM ET

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,
It doesn’t seem fair that any player — let alone one the quality of Doan — would have to endure two Twilight Zone seasons in their career but, this year, the 33-year-old native of Halkirk, Alta., again finds himself in circumstances you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy.
This offseason, as you are doubtlessly aware, the Coyotes declared bankruptcy and became wards of the NHL when Jim Balsillie’s attempt to purchase the team was thwarted by the league. That meant they were staying in Phoenix for one more season. But it also meant they started training camp without a coach and, more to the point, without any semblance of hope.
But, for all that bad news, the good news is Doan again finds himself in the middle of a remarkable story. The Coyotes — the team no one wanted, literally — have rallied around coach Dave Tippett, a steely group of veterans and their own sense of desperation and, against all odds, sat in fourth place in the West before last night.
I mean, before this season, you’d have got better odds on Tiger Woods being named Husband of the Year than the ‘Yotes making the playoffs.

And you want to communicate that message to the younger players. When you ask the media, they’ll say hockey players are the easiest to get along with—and it’s our job to continue that.
“I think it’s really important to help out the new guys on the team. Maybe the most important thing you can do as a captain is make sure every player knows you appreciate him and what he does.”

Silently, A Great Season From Doan

via Jim Gintonio of Ice Chips at the Arizona Republic,
Another season almost gone, and again Coyotes captain Shane Doan never seems to get the credit he deserves.
If Doan were playing in New York, Philadelphia, Boston or any Canadian city, he’d be one of the biggest stars in town. Still, he never complains, and if he could get the Coyotes into the playoffs next season, it would be a huge accomplishment for him – even though he would deflect any praise to his teammates….
Doan reached the 30-goal plateau for the second time in his career in the Coyotes’ 3-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday … and wouldn’t you know it, he was overshadowed by a rookie goalie who recorded a shutout in his NHL debut.

“There has to be a competition amongst the group to see who’s going to show that they want it. f you want it, you have to go get it. That’s the biggest thing…We have skill, we just have to make sure that we want it enough. And that’s every single guy, myself included. There has to be a willingness to do whatever it takes and you have to be scared of losing.”

Coyote Curse

From Dan Bickley at The Arizona Republic:
Shane Doan is the eternal optimist. There are always better days ahead.
But lately, he isn’t so sure.
“Maybe the problem is me,” the Coyotes’ captain said.
It sounds funny. Doan is the remaining link to the team’s days in Winnipeg, a windy, frosty city where the franchise last won a playoff series. That was way back in 1987, when a ghastly mural of Queen Elizabeth II hung inside the arena. So that’s it. Maybe he’s the curse.

First Sticks, Now Pucks

from Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic,
Coyotes left wing Shane Doan got an unexpected result when he attempted to score against the Washington Capitals on Thursday night. His shot broke the puck in two pieces when it hit the glass, something that neither coach Wayne Gretzky nor Doan’s teammates remember ever seeing.
So how did he do it?
He flexed his biceps, then laughed.
The puck broke when it hit the partition in the glass.
And theory the the puck was traveling at 200 mph?
“Oh, it might have been,” he joked.

Doan & Jokinen Share Goals

from Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic,
Now Shane Doan and Olli Jokinen, unexpectedly thrown together as linemates in a blockbuster deal this summer, hope to use their skills - and unleash years of pent-up frustration - to get the Coyotes into the playoffs for the first time since 2002. To accomplish that task, both will have to be offensive powerhouses.
A trip to the postseason also would do a lot to take the 800-pound hockey puck off their backs. Here are two of their numbers: Jokinen, 723 games played and no playoff appearances; Doan, 396 since his last blip on the playoff radar in 2002.
More than 1,000 games to look back on, a lot of “what-if” scenarios, but this newest and biggest version of the desert’s Dynamic Duo has its sights set on making this a season to remember.

Doan Played with Broken Hand
by Alanah McGinley on 02/15/08 at 03:52 PM ET

From Jim Gintonio of The Arizona Republic,
Two things fans know about Shane Doan: The Coyotes’ captain had a slow start, and then he cranked up his offense to the point where he was the third-leading scorer in the NHL during January.
What was not known: He did it with a broken hand.
Doan just smiled when asked about the injury, which is healed.
“He plays the same way all the time,” coach Wayne Gretzky said. “He played hard at the beginning of the year; he just wasn’t scoring any goals.”
