The Boston Bruins and forward Shawn Thornton have agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $1.1 million a year.
Thornton was scheduled to become a free agent on July 1.

COACH JULIEN
On being excited for Game 7 despite being focused…
There is no doubt that everybody is excited about this opportunity. But like you said you got to stay the course. I think it’s served us well. Our group right now seems calm and focused and ready to do the job. Our team if it gets stressed out has never performed well so I don’t expect us or I don’t want us to go out there stressed out. I expect our team to go out there excited and determined to do the job. So far I haven’t seen anything different than that.
On what the most important thing is for the team to focus on tonight…
Lots of energy, energy so that we can focus on putting pucks in deep and forechecking and the physicality of our game, the fact that we need to get to the front of the net like we’ve done every time that we’ve had success. If we can do that again, offensively our game is going to be a lot better. I don’t have much complaints about our defensive game here in Vancouver but certainly our offensive game has got to be better today.

Bruins Today: Q&As with Ryder, Bergeron, Lucic, and Others

Today’s transcripts of Q&As with Michael Ryder, Chris Kelly, Milan Lucic, Shawn Thornton, Patrice Bergeron, Gregory Campbell and Andrew Ference.
MICHAEL RYDER
Q. The suspension for Rome’s four games, does that surprise you? Do you think that’s just?
MICHAEL RYDER: Well, it was a League decision that came out just then. I guess we heard the same time you guys did. It’s their decision, and that’s it.
Q. Are you satisfied?
MICHAEL RYDER: Well, you know, Horty is a big part of our team. He’s been huge for us all season in the playoffs. We’re definitely going to miss him.
It’s not my call how many games Rome gets or whatever. The league just decided that four was it. Everybody is going to have to deal with that.

Boston’s Thornton Takes Skate To Forehead And Abuse From A Blackhawk
by Paul on 03/30/11 at 07:30 AM ET

from Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe,
At 3:31 of the second period, Thornton was cut by Fernando Pisani’s skate blade. Thornton was trying to finish his check when he lost his balance and fell. The blade carved open a J-shaped wound above Thornton’s right eye. Had it been an inch lower, Thornton might have lost his eye. Thornton required 40-plus stitches to close the gash. Thornton didn’t return.
“Lucky,’’ Thornton said. “A little lower and it could have been on my eye. No headache, no concussion, no nothing. It’s throbbing a little bit from getting a lot of stitches in there. But nothing bad.’’
Thornton wasn’t pleased about an unidentified Blackhawk chirping. As Thornton made his way to the dressing room, he heard one of the Blackhawks give him the business from the bench. Thornton stopped and made it known he didn’t appreciate it.
“There was some stuff said that I’m not very happy about,’’ Thornton said. “If I ever find out who it was, I’ll deal with it in my own way.’’

Back In The Homeland

from Shawn P. Roarke of NHL.com,
Hockey has given Shawn Thornton many things in life, but he never imagined it would bring him back to his roots.
Yet, there Thornton sat Thursday afternoon—after an overnight flight from Boston—in the city of his mother’s birth, peeling off a sweaty Boston Bruins jersey and ruminating exactly on what the game has given him.
Just since signing with Boston in 2007, Thornton has found a hockey home and been exposed to experiences he never believed to be possible.
“I’m pretty fortunate, my first exhibition game with Boston after I signed was in Newfoundland and I hadn’t been back there in five or six years and now this,” Thornton told NHL.com Thursday. “The timing has been pretty good for myself.”
Thornton played his first four pro seasons in the American Hockey League with the St. John’s Maple Leafs, which made that first trip such a powerful homecoming.

Thornton, who skated on both sides of the fourth line, averaged 9:02 of ice time per game. Thornton recorded 21 fights, including his beatdown of Matt Cooke in the first Boston-Pittsburgh game following Marc Savard’s concussion.

First shift for both players, they drop their gloves and go at it.
Hopefully the end of the story.
