Surgery & Procedure Set For Gagne

from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,
Philadelphia Flyers All-Star left wing Simon Gagne will have surgery Tuesday to repair issues with his abdominal and groin muscles and will miss about 6-8 weeks.
Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren confirmed that Gagne, who has missed the last two games with a groin injury, will have a procedure performed to repair the rectus abdominus muscles on each side of his groin area.
The surgery will be performed by Dr. William Meyers at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. Meyers is considered an expert in this field.
Holmgren said Meyers also will perform a laparoscopic procedure to check the status of a pair of small hernias in his right groin.
“Simon is going to have surgery tomorrow to repair or reinforce his rectus abdominus (muscles) on both sides,” said Holmgren. “At the same time he’s going to look and see laparoscopically through his belly button at the smaller hernias and repair those as well.
“We’re probably looking at 6-8 weeks before Simon can play.”

from Chuck Gormley of Flyer Files,
Flyers left wing Simon Gagne will need surgery to repair two hernias in his right groin area but will seek second opinions from two doctors in Canada on Thursday, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgreen said today.
Holmgren said Gagne has agreed that surgery is needed but would like to “cover all his bases” by visiting another specialist. Holmgren said the length of Gagne’s recovery period can only be determined once his surgery is performed.

Flyers left wing Simon Gagne, who took just one shift in the third period in Sunday night’s 5-1 loss to the Sharks, sat out Monday’s practice and had an ultrasound performed on his groin area.
Gagne is off to the slowest start of his career with one goal in nine games.
Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said Gagne “just doesn’t feel right” and is unlikely to play against the Capitals Tuesday night.

Gagne Still Feeling Tightness In Groin Area

from Chuck Gormley of Flyer Files,
Just got back from the Flyers’ practice, where Simon Gagne declined to speak to me – a rarity for him — because he said he was “going to the doctor” with Flyers athletic trainer Jim McCrossin.
Gagne has no goals and three assists in five games this season and has lacked the jump he showed most of last season when he finished with 34 goals.

Gagne Receives A Shot Of His Own Blood
by Paul on 09/08/09 at 09:20 PM ET

from Chuck Gormley of Flyer Files at the Courier-Post,
Flyers left wing Simon Gagne has had enough groin and hip strains throughout his career to know it typically takes three to four weeks of rehab before he is skating pain free.
So why was Gagne back on the ice Tuesday skating for 25 minutes without the slightest hint of discomfort just 10 days after receiving an injection into his right groin?
Because instead of cortisone, Gagne was injected with concentrated amounts of his own blood – a procedure called platelet-rich plasma therapy – to speed the healing process.

A Little Bitter Tim?

from Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly,
What was going through the mind of that brilliant strategist Mike Babcock this week, while he was skating players hard on the first day of his Team Canada Olympic orientation camp in Calgary?
Talk about brain cramps from one of hockey’s more obnoxious coaches – and we haven’t heard a single person question that serious lack of judgment.
Most of Babcock’s players hadn’t seen a pair of skates – much less laced them up – since last spring. True, Simon Gagne had been skating for two weeks. But he wasn’t skating hard.
Is it any wonder Gagne tweaked his right groin?
Good thing they had insurance, huh? Just to protect the players from Babcock.

Flyers left wing Simon Gagne injured his surgically repaired right hip on the first day of Olympic workouts in Calgary on Monday, the Courier-Post has learned.
Speaking by phone from the Pengrowth Saddledome, Gagne said he felt soreness in his right hip during a fast-paced practice on Monday and will not return to the ice this week.
“For now it’s nothing serious,” Gagne said. “The pace was a little faster than I was used to this summer. I think I’ll be OK for training camp.”

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
The New York Rangers have a fast-approaching object in their rearview mirror. It’s orange and has a gap in its teeth.
The Philadelphia Flyers are four points back of the Atlantic Division-leading Rangers with four games in hand, a red-hot stretch of 12-1-3 in their last 16 games rocketing them up the Eastern Conference standings.
“We started to play our best hockey of the season about a month ago,” Flyers star winger Simon Gagne told ESPN.com last night.
Gagne has been clutch on a line with Mike Richards and Mike Knuble. Jeff Carter is pumping in goals as well on another line with Scott Hartnell and Joffrey Lupul.

Gagne Says No Concussion
by Paul on 12/06/08 at 11:08 AM ET

from Wayne Fish of phillyBurbs,
Despite some skepticism from fans, media and maybe even some teammates, friends and family members, the Flyers’ Simon Gagne claims the only reason he left Thursday night’s game in the second period was because of symptoms that felt like the flu....
If there’s any connection between this situation and last year, Gagne said, it has more to do with the fatigue of the rigorous schedule right now.
“Not playing for eight months last year, coming back, and if you look at the last two weeks, it’s just hockey, day off, hockey,” Gagne said. “It’s a lot of games. I knew this year I would have some ups and downs.”
Gagne said no tests related to a concussion were performed.
“There’s no point,” he said. “I didn’t get hit. It’s just natural for people to get sick, so you don’t have to run a test for a concussion if you just get sick.’’

Is It The Flu, Virus Or Concussion?
by Paul on 12/05/08 at 12:34 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Tim Panaccio at CSN Philly,
Both Gagne and general manager Paul Holmgren denied after the game he was concussed. Gagne said he had either the flu or a stomach virus, since he has been experiencing digestion problems for two days. Holmgren said Gagne was dehydrated and that’s all.
Gagne, like another famous Flyer, Keith Primeau, suffered multiple concussions last season and has experienced post-concussion syndrome.
Neurological experts say anyone who has suffered from post-concussion syndrome can experience concussion symptoms many months or even years later because they have suffered multiple brain trauma.
In other words, Gagne could have concussion symptoms without being hit or incurring an injury in a game.

Gagne Waiting For That Hit

from Rob Parent of the Delco Times,
Simon Gagne doesn’t know what evil lurks in the shadows of the preseason. When it comes to the hearts of hockey players, however, Gagne has been there, been done in by that before.
“It’s going to come,” Gagne the concussed elder Flyers statesman said Saturday as the team opened training camp. “I will be confident ... I’m going to look for it.”
What Simon says he seeks is a hit - another big one. The type that Florida’s Jay Bouwmeester laid on him in the early days of the 2007-08 season, sending Gagne down a long and arduous path toward an aborted season and a series of career questions that continue today.
As in ... can he still have a career?

Injections Help Gagne Return To The Ice
by Paul on 08/27/08 at 07:54 AM ET

from Chuck Gormley at the Sporting News,
Concussion symptoms kept Gagne out of all but 25 games last season. Those are gone, he says, thanks to an innovative injection therapy called prolotherapy.
Gagne, 28, first heard about the procedure while watching a health segment on a Philadelphia news channel.
“When I first saw Simon back in April, he had neck pain, dizziness and real bad headaches,” Greenberg said. “But he also had a tilt to his pelvis and some back pain. His symptoms were very similar to whiplash.”
Gagne had a series of anesthetic injections in his neck, head, shoulders, pelvis and back. Greenberg said the injections are generally made up of two anesthetics and an inflammatory agent such as dextrose or cod liver extract.

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post,
Simon Gagne has a few words of encouragement for Flyers fans that have seen R.J. Umberger, Jason Smith and Sami Kapanen leave Philadelphia to play elsewhere next season.
“The way I look at it, I might be the free agent the Flyers signed this year,” Gagne said. “I wasn’t a big part of the team last year and I want to be a big part this season.”
Gagne said the concussion symptoms that kept him out of all but 25 games last season are completely gone, thanks to an innovative injection therapy called prolotherapy.

That is the advice of concussion specialist James Kelly, who examined Gagne today in Denver.
The Flyers’ left wing has suffered three concussions in five months. General manager Paul Holmgren expressed “disappointment” but said the club would agree to shut Gagne down.

From the Philadelphia Flyers,
Q: Is this a new concussion or an extension of the old concussions?
SG: “That’s a good question. The only thing I can say right now is that I don’t think it is that bad. I know the symptoms were definitely worse the last time. Hopefully I will feel better very soon. The doctor said I could feel very good in the next couple of days. I just have to take it one day at a time and see what happens.”Q: What is the outlook?
SG: “Like I said, right now it is one day at a time. It could be a couple of days, it could be a week or it could be longer. There is no timeframe on what is going on right now.”

from the Philadelphia Daily News,
Again, while it is fun to speculate about Forsberg, in Gagne, the Flyers are already getting an All-Star impact player for the stretch run - one who is only going to get better and better as he works his way back into full condition.
“I think I’m in pretty good shape, but I want to get back to game shape, skillwise, get the legs back and all the quickness I had before,” Gagne said.
The Flyers are now 10-3-1 with Gagne in the lineup, 14-12-2 without.

Flyers Getting Healthy
by Paul on 01/09/08 at 09:01 PM ET

from the Philadelphia Flyers,
Simon Gagne (concussion), Jason Smith (leg injury), Sami Kapanen (facial lacerations) and Scottie Upshall (sprained ankle) all skated with their teammates on Wednesday at practice. If this were a football injury update, Gagne and Kapanen would be on the probable side, while Smith and Upshall would be listed as questionable.
Of course, the big news is that Gagne, who has missed the last 26 games, will get back into game action after the long layoff.
“I’ll be nervous,” said the two-time 40-goal scorer. “I was a little bit nervous coming in for practice today. I felt good again on the ice and I’m looking forward to playing in New York.”

Gagne On His Way Back

from the Courier Post,
Simon Gagne’s long road back from the worst concussion of his career appears to be just a week away, possibly sooner.
Sidelined for the past 13 games and for 17 of the Flyers’ last 19, Gagne is now skating without headaches, but there remains some pressure in the back of his head and in his neck.
“Physically, on the ice, I felt very good and that’s a great thing,” Gagne said Sunday. “It’s a step forward to where I want to go. Hopefully, I’ll keep going like that for the next couple days.”

Gagne Still Not Ready For Return
by Paul on 11/27/07 at 07:26 AM ET

from the Philadelphia Daily News,
When Simon Gagne went out with a concussion on Nov. 7, there was a feeling that he could miss up to a month.
But now, as the Flyers are nearly at the end of the month, the likelihood is that he might take all of December to get healthy....
While this is some indication of progress, it is not a sign that he will return soon. Even after he is able to start skating and work back into practicing with the team, he will need a significant length of time at full practice to get back into game condition, as well as make sure the concussion has healed.
He can’t even say when that might be right now.

Gagne’s Concussion Issues
by Alanah McGinley on 11/16/07 at 03:38 PM ET
Comments (6)
From the AP via NHL.com,
It took two bouts of dizziness and other symptoms for the determination to be made Wednesday that Gagne sustained at least one concussion, if not two.
“First of all we didn’t know for sure and secondly I wasn’t aware of the repercussions,” general manager Paul Holmgren said. “I was under the assumption ... if he’s got a mild concussion, he’s got to be out seven days. That’s not the case.”
Gagne was injured at Florida on Oct. 24 after being hit in the jaw by Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. He sat out four games, but the Flyers never said anything about a concussion. Gagne was said to be dealing with dizziness. Gagne returned to practice after being symptom-free for two days. He followed that with a morning skate the next day on Nov. 5 before dressing for that night’s game at the New York Rangers.
Gagne came through that OK, but didn’t look like himself on the ice. Two nights later, he was hit by Pittsburgh’s Gary Roberts and the symptoms came back.

Grading System Flawed When It Comes To Concussion Issues
by Paul on 11/14/07 at 08:44 AM ET
Comments (0)
from the Philadelphia Daily News,
Gagne is at fault for rushing back to the ice. The Flyers are for allowing him to do so, especially since there is growing sentiment within the medical community over whether the NAN guidelines are too lax. Two international conferences in this decade, organized by the International Hockey Federation and the International Olympic Committee, concluded that any multitiered grading system is flawed because it seeks to assess severity before all symptoms surface.
“First of all, it doesn’t matter how many,” Lindros said. “It’s the severity.”

Gagne Proceeds With Caution
by Paul on 11/10/07 at 07:26 AM ET

from PhillyBurbs,
After admitting he probably came back too soon from his first bout with concussion-like symptoms, the Flyers left wing vowed to take more time off before jumping back into NHL action with his latest woes, which include dizziness and fatigue.
When a return date might be is anyone’s guess.
This much we do know: Gagne was examined by team doctor Gary Dorshimer on Friday. While Dorshimer continues to decline to use the word “concussion” in describing Gagne’s condition, the simple matter is that it took Gagne three attempts before passing a baseline test the last time around and now says he isn’t ready to take another since once again complaining of symptoms.

Gagne Remains Day-to-Day for Flyers
by Alanah McGinley on 10/30/07 at 03:47 PM ET
Comments (1)
From Dan Gelston at the AP via USA Today,
Simon Gagne compares his health to a barfly who’s had a few too many stiff drinks.
He stops short, however, of describing what he’s feeling as any kind of lingering symptoms from a concussion.
“Nobody has really said if it’s a concussion,” Gagne said after the Flyers practiced Tuesday. “Right now, it’s more a vision problem and dizziness. I don’t think they call that a concussion.”
Gagne hasn’t played for the Philadelphia Flyers since he was knocked out of last Wednesday’s game against Florida. He has not been cleared to return to the ice.
*A “vision problem and dizziness” and they don’t figure it’s related to a concussion? Odd.
