Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette‘s Empty Netters is at the arena right now—you can check out his photos here. He also linked the video below, from CBC’s opening broadcast of the playoffs back in April.
A great video, and I thought it might be a good kick-off for tonight as well.
Puck drop, 1 hour 35 minutes, and counting…

Behind the Scenes

From Simon Dingley at CBC’s Stanley Cup Playoff Blog,
It is something few reporters experience.
Behind the scenes, at the Stanley Cup final. Outside the winning team’s dressing room in the moments leading up to the trophy being awarded.
Wednesday night during the second period of Game 6, I parked myself beside the Red Wings’ room at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena. Usually I cover NHL games from the press box. But I feared if I didn’t get down to the Wings’ room early, I may not get in at all because of the huge crush of media.

The NHL Needs a Fanfest

From Ryan Kennedy at The Hockey News,
Now, I know the anti-fun militia won’t like this, but let’s take a cue from the most successful sport in North America – NFL football – and schedule some sort of pre-final Stanley Cup extravaganza. In the days leading up to the Super Bowl, you can’t turn around without hearing about some sort of event hyping up what usually turns out to be a mediocre game (and in Canada, we don’t even get to see the good commercials).
Let’s have a fanfest. Bands will play, the Cup will be there, Mark Messier will sign autographs and give out bags of potato chips – it’ll be fun. This year, an event in Detroit could have featured Kid Rock and Bob Probert. Pittsburgh could counter with Mario Lemieux and a reunion of his buddies from the 1991 and ’92 Cup teams. Bring the kids, we’ll party until at least 9:30.
Note: Perhaps an octopus-taste-test in Detroit counts as a fanfest?

Welcoming the Hockey World to Detroit

From Paul Kukla at NHL.com,
I am taking a different approach today and will officially welcome you to the Metro Detroit area. I ask you to forget all the negative things you have read and heard about Motown. Sure there are areas you want to avoid, just like every large city in the world. Instead I will point out how the folks in Southeast Michigan will welcome you with open arms. We are a hard working bunch, and although this area is suffering through a down-turn in the automotive industry, we still are trying to keep our heads above water. Approach us, talk to us, we don’t bite and want to talk hockey with you and get your feelings on our game.
Michiganders love hockey, we love that is all that is good about the sport. It is in our blood and we have been playing in the NHL since the mid-1920’s. Our father’s father passed the game on to us. Our mother’s know the game too. We appreciate the special talents each and every NHL player has. We are amazed and hypnotized by the action on the ice and we feel part of the Detroit Red Wings family. Plain and simple, we are hockey fans.
