Neil Gets Payback On Downie

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators finally got even with Steve Downie.

Dean McAmmond might be long gone, but Downie’s cheap shot from two years ago (earning him a 20-game suspension) wasn’t forgotten last night. Chris Neil nailed Downie, a Tampa Bay Lightning winger, with 6:04 left in the third period of a 3-1 pre-season win last night in front of a packed house at the Brandt Centre.

Neil was given a charging minor and game misconduct for his hit along the boards in the dying minutes.

“I didn’t get him as good as I would like to have,” said Neil. “He drops his gloves with me and then he says, ‘Oh, I’m not fighting.’ He tried to flip me. I got him with some good ones. I wish I got him with some better ones.

“I’m not concerned at all (about supplementary discipline). I finished my check. It might have been a little late. It was a clean hit. It’s one of those things. He was just lucky he was able to get me down before I got going.”

Lightning May Get The Last Laugh

from Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated,

Don’t laugh. Despite a well-earned reputation as the league’s loosest cannon, (Steve) Downie might be up to the challenge.

A former first-round pick, Downie was seen as the next Steve Ott when he was taken 29th overall by Philadelphia in 2005. An offensive whiz in junior (92 points in just 45 games during his final season in the OHL), he was envisioned as someone who would create space and opportunities with his ferocious checking and willingness to step over the line on occasion.

But rather than learn to pick his spots, Downie seems to have spent his entire career seeking new ways to make people forget that he can actually play the game.

Flyers Trade For Matt Carle

from Ed Moran of the Philadelphia Daily News,

While the Flyers continue to wait for news from free agent winger Brendan Shanahan, they made a more critical move to strengthen their ailing defense, sending Steve Downie and Steve Eminger to Tampa Bay for 24-year-old defenseman Matt Carle.

Jason Smith Expected Back Tonight

From CBC,

Jason Smith did not take the morning skate but rode a bike and says he will play. Randy Jones still has a bit of the flu but skated and remains a pre-game decision. Philadelphia head coach John Stevens expects Jones to play, as well.

Steve Downie out with the flu. Believe he did not make the trip.

Laraque Hit On Downie

via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

The only thing on which the Penguins and Flyers could agree was that Laraque was assessed a major penalty for hitting from behind and a game misconduct. Get past that, and everything became a matter of partisan perspective.

When Flyers coach John Stevens looked at the sequence, for example, he saw “a vicious incident” and “a very, very dangerous play.”

When Laraque reflected on it, he saw an incident in which he pushed Downie, not cross-checked him, and did so with absolutely no malice, let alone intent to injure.

“If I want to hit somebody from behind,” Laraque said, “he’s not going to get up.”

Anytime Downie Hits Someone…

from On Frozen Pond,

OK, so Rostislav Olesz takes a late hit from Steve Downie, but since the Panthers didn’t do much complaining about it—and didn’t do anything about it—I won’t pile on. But, this could be bad. Olesz bounced up off the ice in a lot of pain.

JM says he re-injured his surgically repaired wrist/hand area, although I’m not so sure. That was Rusty’s right hand and it looked to me like he came up favoring his left. But we’ll see. Either way, doesn’t look good.

You decide…

Clarke Approves of Downie’s Actions

From TSN,

More fuel was thrown on the fire regarding Steve Downie’s sucker punch on Wednesday, with Philadelphia Flyers Senior Vice President Bob Clarke holding the gas can.

Clarke, who selected Downie 29th overall in the 2005 Entry Draft, told TSN’s Off The Record that he enjoyed watching the rookie forward go after Toronto Maple Leafs winger Jason Blake.

“When he went after Blake, I loved it,” Clarke told TSN.

note: GM Paul Holmgren was a bit less understanding the other day.

Update 4:30pm ET: From the Globe & Mail,

After the Leafs’ morning skate Wednesday morning, Blake said brushed aside Clarke’s comments and repeated what he said about Downie a day earlier.

“I don’t care who it is, but in the over-all picture, there’s no place for [those hits],” he said. “You don’t want injuries that will keep you out for the whole season. I’m just thankful there was no structural damage.”

Leafs head coach Paul Maurice put Clarke’s comments down to sticking up for one of his players.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Maurice said. “Whether you’re a player or in the office, you take care of your own.”

No Suspension For Downie

from the Philadelphia Inquirer,

Colin Campbell, NHL Executive Vice President and enforcer of discipline, gave him a stern warning about his sucker punch that left Toronto’s Jason Blake with a black eye, but did not suspend him.

“We had a conversation with Mr. Campbell and that’s it. The rest will be between the league, the Flyers and Steve,” said general manager Paul Holmgren. “It was a good talk.

“It’s Steve’s [fourth] NHL game. He’s walking a fine line there, which is basically what he was told. My conversation with Steve was a little harsher than Colin Campbell’s.”

The Other Side Of Steve Downie

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post,

Latchford didn’t know a whole lot about Downie when she opened her Peterborough, Ontario, home to him two years ago. She had heard about his on-ice fight with junior teammate, Akim Aliu, but other than that, she knew very little.

But as their relationship grew, so did Latchford’s affection and appreciation for Downie.

She was there for him when he lost a 19-year-old friend to leukemia and a 20-year-old friend to meningitis. She has seen a side to Downie very few people in the hockey world has seen.

“He’s been through a lot, but he doesn’t want anybody to feel sorry for him because he lost his father,” Latchford said from her home in Peterborough. “Other kids have been through things, too, but nobody knows about them because they’re not in the limelight.”

Call Colin Campbell

A KK reader dropped this in our email box tonight. Mike expressed concern that maybe suspensions aren’t being taken as seriously as we’d all hope:

The league’s disciplinarian should probably be aware that not only is Steve Downie flouting the suspension handed down to him, but he’s also setting up goals…

Here’s the screenshot from the Yahoo! boxscore earlier tonight:

Downie Gets A Month Suspension In The AHL

from TSN,

AHL President and CEO David Andrews announced Tuesday that Steve Downie has been ruled ineligible to play in the AHL for one month from the start of the 2007-08 season.

“The American Hockey League has established a strict disciplinary standard over the last several seasons relative to deliberate hits to the head,” said Andrews in a statement. “We strongly support the National Hockey League’s recent directives on these dangerous hits, and we want to send a clear message that actions such as Mr. Downie’s are unacceptable in our game.”

A Look At Steve Downie

from Ed Moran at Philly News,

Downie did not have it easy as a kid, and it impacts him the way his story impacts everyone that gets to know him. His father, John, was killed in a car accident driving him to hockey practice when Steve was 7.

At 13, the hearing in his right ear began to fade and he now wears an aid off the ice.

When he was drafted by the Flyers 29th overall in 2005, he broke down and cried. He told reporters of the sacrifices his mother had made and how he was saddened that his father was not there to be part of the day.

He said that he remembered the day his father died. “I remember every minute of it. It only makes me play harder,” he said.

Colin Campbell Discusses Downie Suspension

Colin Campbell was involved with a tele-conference call today discussing the Downie suspension.

Q. Can you characterize what Steve Downie did to Dean McAmmond? What you saw?

COLIN CAMPBELL: Characterize? We had requested this be put on the agenda for the board of governors. As a result, the general managers looked at a number of hits. We had 52 hits from last season that were not suspendable hits, but hits where shoulders were delivered to the head.

And from that meeting on, the general managers in June, it was in Ottawa in the finals, the Competition Committee met and reviewed the same hit.

We convened a group of coaches in late July, early August as well as having talked about the draft to a number of coaches, assistant coaches as well. We had six coaches that were brought in here and we discussed what we had found.

At the end of the day, there were a number of criteria that the groups didn’t like, and any of those criteria could get you suspended. At the same time, we wanted to keep hitting in the game of hockey. And legal shoulder checks to the head would be allowed if they were delivered in a legal fashion.

Downie Suspended

from 640am in Toronto,

The NHL has suspended Flyers rookie Steve Downie following a vicious hit on Senators forward Dean McAmmond last night.

added 6:54am, from the Ottawa Sun,

“There’s no place in the game for that stuff,” a seething McGrattan said after the game. “That was a dirty hit and he’s a dirty player. He’s known for that and he’ll get what’s coming to him next time we play him, for sure.

“You don’t want to see stuff like that. We’re not out there to kill each other. At this level, he’ll get what’s coming to him.”

Update September 27, 7:40pm ET:
Just a note that Downie contacted McAmmond to offer an apology.  From The Star,

A phone call of apology from Steve Downie has earned the Philadelphia Flyers prospect some understanding from Dean McAmmond but not from the rest of the Ottawa Senators.

Downie Impressing Flyers

from the Courier Post,

With Mike Knuble, Scottie Upshall and Sami Kapanen holding down the Flyers’ top three right wing spots, Downie has emerged as a serious threat to win a job on the club’s opening night roster in Calgary in 10 days.

“We’re going to have to make that decision,” Flyers’ coach John Stevens said Monday night after watching the Flyers fall to the New Jersey Devils 3-1 in their preseason home opener at the Wachovia Center.

“He’s certainly a guy that’s making an impact on our team right now. He’s exceeded my expectations at this point. I just love the fire he plays with and he’s played with discipline every game he’s played. He’s been a wonderful surprise so far.”

“He wins a lot of puck battles,” Stevens said. “He has good vision with the puck and sees lanes a lot of kids his age don’t see. He’s got a combination of determination and skill you don’t see every day.”
