Yzerman All-In For NHL Participation In 2014 Olympic Hockey
by Paul on 11/11/09 at 08:02 AM ET

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
Win or lose in Vancouver, Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman feels NHLers should be Russia-bound for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
In fact, Stevie Y said yesterday he would be willing to take part in negotiations that would help NHL players land in Sochi, Russia.
“Absolutely,” Yzerman said. “I have my own opinion. I understand the league’s concerns.
“But I think (the NHL’s participation) is needed.”

from Darren Pang at HockeyChats.com,
Tonight, I get to sit, enjoy, and take in a moment I never imagined happening some 30 years ago when Steve Yzerman and I began our friendship, playing hockey in Nepean, Ontario.
It has lasted the test of time, and he has been a friend that has been so much greater than that as a player. He is a great father to 3 girls, a phenomenal husband and one of the greatest leaders this sport has ever seen.
more from Darren as he takes in the HHOF inductions.

from Helene Elliott at the Fabulous Forum,
Yzerman provided a thoughtful response when asked what it takes to transform a good team into a Stanley Cup winner.
“When you get to the point where nothing else matters but winning the Cup and everything else is irrelevant—goals, assists, everything personal,” he said. “It just became an obsession with our ownership and our fans.”

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal via Faceoff.com,
At the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Team Canada trainers were draining his aching right knee of fluid and shooting the leg full of painkiller so he could get his skates on, never mind race up and down the ice. He wanted to play, so he did, but it was agony, at times, after his knee was scoped three weeks before the tournament.
“I played two pre-tournament games in Montreal and Minnesota and had no swelling. I told Wayne (Gretzky, Olympic team boss)I was fine, then the first tournament game it got sore against Sweden. Then, against Germany, the knee became really painful and it just progressed,” said Yzerman.
“I don’t know if I willed myself to play, but I said, ‘Oh, boy, I’ve made this commitment. I can’t bail out now. I knew I had to work through it as best I could.”

Yzerman Values Experience For Team Canada
by Paul on 10/25/09 at 09:58 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,
The latest stop on Steve Yzerman’s pre-Olympic tour brought him to Philadelphia on Sunday for the Flyers-Sharks game, where he got to take a first-hand look at a number of players who might fill roster spots on Canada’s entry in the Vancouver 2010 Games.
Philadelphia’s Chris Pronger, Simon Gagne, Mike Richards and Jeff Carter attended the summer orientation camp in Calgary, as did San Jose’s Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle....While Yzerman wouldn’t discuss individual players, he did say there were players not invited to the Calgary camp in the running for an Olympic berth. He also said that while he’d like an experienced team, the player’s talents will be the biggest factor in them earning a roster spot.
“I think there’s a lot of importance in having guys that are experienced veteran players that have played in the Olympics, in the Stanley Cup Playoffs a lot,” said Yzerman. “There’s a lot of importance in that. We look to have some veteran players on the team and there will be some veteran players. I’m not going to not take a guy because he’s young. But I do place value in experience.”

from Tony Care of CBC Sports,
CBCSports.ca: The competition for the No. 1 goaltender spot will no doubt be the toughest decision for Babcock and his staff. With Roberto Luongo and Martin Brodeur expected to battle for the lead position, will strong play in the months leading up to the Games be the determining factor?
Yzerman: I’ll obviously have some input, but at the end of the day, the coaches will decide who starts in goal for us. I think for that position it’s very important that we have guys coming in tournament that are on top of their game. The position doesn’t allow a player to find time to get his game in shape. Our depth is outstanding. [Carolina goaltender] Cam Ward won a [world championship] gold medal and a Stanley Cup. In the last two years, [Pittsburgh netminder] Marc-André Fleury has gone to the finals and won Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final.

The Toughest Job In Canada
by Paul on 08/23/09 at 09:38 PM ET

from Roy MacGregor of the Globe and Mail at CTV Olympics,
Anyone who thinks Stephen Harper, with his fragile government and fractured economy, has the toughest job in the country should consider the task Steve Yzerman is about to face.
The prime minister of the national game - also known as executive director of the Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team - must somehow turn the 45 red and white players who will take to the ice this evening at the Pengrowth Saddledome into gold.
Silver or bronze - Canadian hockey’s equivalent of winning a minority government - simply will not do.

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
One of the most curious invitees for the Canadian Olympic orientation camp is a player who doesn’t even know if he’s going to put on the blades at all this year: Joe Sakic.
But it is a measure of the respect for Sakic’s pedigree, and the integrity of Canadian Olympic executive director Steve Yzerman and Hockey Canada, that the veteran forward was extended an invitation, even though a decision on whether he will retire or not has not yet been made public.
Yzerman said he recently called Sakic and, without prying about his decision, told him he wanted Sakic at camp.

We place a lot of importance on veteran leadership, and he’s such a strong character guy. Having this conversation with Joe at one point before, he doesn’t want to be there just for what he’s done in the past. He wants to be there because he deserves it, and that’s my feeling. But even if he decides to take more time this summer to decide, I’d still like to extend an invitation to him.”

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Even if it is sometimes easy to forget, Steve Yzerman actually does have a day job.
Officially, he is the Detroit Red Wings’ vice president/hockey, which places Yzerman just between general manager Ken Holland and vice president/assistant general manager Jim Nill on the NHL team’s administrative pecking order.
But nowadays, wherever he goes and whatever he does, Yzerman is primarily identified as executive director of Canada’s 2010 men’s Olympic hockey team.

Yzerman Meets New Challenges
by Paul on 11/05/08 at 08:01 PM ET

from the CP,
Now 43 and busier than ever, Yzerman paradoxically looks younger and fresher than he did during the final injury-filled seasons of his career with the Detroit Red Wings. The intensity that made him one of the greatest NHLers in history is still there, but there’s also a renewed vibrancy that has come with new challenges.
Perhaps that’s why it seemed just a little strange to see him among the inductees to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Yzerman is a little more than two years removed from announcing his retirement, but his contributions to the game continue as a vice-president with the Red Wings and the executive director of Canada’s 2010 Olympic men’s hockey team.

Scratch Yzerman Off Your GM List
by Paul on 10/28/08 at 10:09 AM ET

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
We bring this matter to your attention, fellow puckheads, because if Bryan Murray’s GM job should ever come under fire with the Senators, and we certainly hope not, I guarantee you Yzerman’s name would be at the forefront of the Ottawa media’s wish list. Given that Yzerman is an Ottawa native, a GM in waiting and, not to mention, one of the game’s greatest players ever.
But, for now, all other NHL teams will have to take a rain check.
“This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me with the Olympic program,” said Yzerman, an Olympic gold medalist in 2002. “For me, if I were to go into another [NHL] situation as a first-time [GM], there’s a lot going on, and I know it’s not the right thing to do.”

Why Stevie Y
by Paul on 10/23/08 at 10:04 AM ET
Comments (6)
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
The naming of Steve Yzerman as executive director of Team Canada for the 2010 Winter Olympics is a slap in the face of the history of hockey.
This has nothing to do with Yzerman himself, who was a superb player and is a fine hockey man, and everything to do with Hockey Canada again ignoring the obvious.
For reasons it can best explain, Hockey Canada remains obsessed with the big-name, high-profile, star-quality leader. In essence, the jock-sniffers approach to running a hockey program.

Yzerman Waiting For The Right Situation

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
“Some day I may have to make a decision whether I’m comfortable in Detroit, or do I want to take a significant role if it means I have to go somewhere else.
“In the right situation, I’d have to consider it. I don’t want to say absolutely not to anything.”
Yzerman’s unique, combined apprenticeship between Detroit and Hockey Canada has made him a hot managerial commodity for the future.
“I’ve learned a lot in Detroit,” he said. “Whether it’s negotiating a contract, debating whether a player should go to the minors or deciding whether we should sign a junior player, every decision that gets made I get to sit in on.
“Then, with Hockey Canada, I’m in a position to actually make decisions. So I really have gained a lot of experience.”

from Jim Boone at the Hockey News,
My fantasy hall of fame does not use the same selection criteria as the HHOF. My hall emphasizes players’ community contributions, longevity in the game and dedication to one team, as well as skill on the ice.
So, who are the charter members of my hall? The very first inductee would be Steve Yzerman. This guy is truly amazing. I won’t rant about all my memories of Stevie ‘Y’ and his generous spirit and amazing on-ice talent. I will, however, tell you a quick story about the size of this guy’s heart.
At a year-end beach party during the final days of my 11th grade in high school, a group of my friends were clowning around on a local Ottawa beach. An accident occurred and one of my peers was left paralyzed and wheelchair bound for his remaining days.

Johan Franzen, also a Conn Smythe candidate, said people don’t realize how ultra competitive Zetterberg is even in off-ice pursuits.
“He’s one of a kind competing that hard in both ends,” Franzen said. “I can’t come up with anyone (comparable).”

from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
As was the case for Yzerman during his 19 seasons as Red Wings captain, Crosby is focused only on that next hockey game.
That steely focus is one of Crosby’s many attributes Yzerman finds appealing.
“I’ve watched how he conducts himself, and I like the way he plays,” said Yzerman, who retired in 2006 as the sixth-leading scorer in NHL history and a three-time Cup champion. “He’s an extremely talented kid, but he competes hard.
“I’ve been very impressed watching from afar.”

Yzerman Getting Noticed In Canada

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Every time I hear Steve Yzerman talk, I’m more and more convinced that he will be the general manager of Canada’s men’s Olympic team sometime soon, maybe even as early as 2010 in Vancouver. I’m trying to put my finger on the quality that comes through when he speaks and I’ve concluded that it’s because, in an era of non-answers, where people in position of authority can talk at great lengths without actually saying much at all, Yzerman represents the polar opposite.

from Rand Simon at the Hockey News,
Dumbest thing heard on the radio recently (non-Rush Limbaugh division): “Look at Steve Yzerman, he hadn’t done a thing by the time he was 28”—Toronto-based sports radio host....
The reality is that by his 28th birthday, Yzerman already had a career worthy of Hall of Fame induction with 1,040 career points to his credit in 757 games. Compare that to Cam Neely who is in the Hall of Fame with 694 career points in 726 career games. (Interestingly, Yzerman also played in exactly 757 games after turning 28 and had 715 points in those games.)
Anyway, it was just another example of why I find it so frustrating to listen to sports talk radio.

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,
Sources have indicated to thehockeynews.com that former Red Wings star and current Wings vice-president Steve Yzerman will return for a second stint as the GM for Canada’s entry in the World Championship this spring when he is named to the post in a news conference Monday morning....
That Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson is prepared to hand Yzerman the keys again this season indicates the enormous amount of confidence he has in Yzerman and also proves how Yzerman has matured as a savvy hockey executive. It also creates an interesting dynamic within the hierarchy of the Red Wings and could force several dominos to fall over sooner than expected.

From Eric Adelson at ESPN The Magazine,
Its sounds like a fairy tale. Steve Yzerman, the legendary hockey hero, reaches out to Braxton Davis, a sick little boy. Think you’ve read this story before? Bet you haven’t.
The magical tale of the hockey hero and the sick little boy came to an end on a warm spring day in Detroit in 2006. Braxton Davis, the sick little boy, stood silently inside the Red Wings’ locker room as the players streamed out, the day before a first-round game against Edmonton. The room was empty, save for one man, Steve Yzerman, who lingered in khakis and a long-sleeved shirt. The Captain, holding a stick in his hand, walked over to Braxton.

I wasn’t really in favour of making dramatic changes three or four years ago and I’m certainly not in favour in making any changes at the time being. Let’s just play the game and continue to develop good young players from all over the world. We cannot keep tinkering.’’

From Mike Zeisberger at the Toronto Sun,
Sitting neatly on a bookshelf in the library of Steve Yzerman’s suburban home are a number of his favourite shiny shinny keepsakes from on and off the ice.
Sprinkled between some of his daughters’ soccer trophies are several sparkling baubles that would make the eyes of any rabid hockey fan bulge.
Three Stanley Cup trophies. A 2002 Olympic gold medal. Another gold medal, this one from the 2007 World Championship in Moscow. Of course, there always is room for more. Yzerman will make room if need be.
Especially if the prize is Olympic gold from the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.
