“I’ve read some stories in the papers too about what the situation could be. To be honest, I haven’t really thought about that too much. I still believe that we can make the playoffs. I don’t want to think about that thing before we’re out.
“So right now, I just think I’m going to be here. That’s the only goal I have right now. Right now, I can’t see that happening. The focus is still do the job here now and see how it goes. A lot of work to do. It’s a big challenge right now.”

Play Byfuglien Up Front & Remember The Teemu Trade
by Paul on 12/04/11 at 09:28 AM ET

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
Matty’s Short Shifts:
• Winnipeg Jets’ Dustin Byfuglien is the most unique player in the NHL, but nobody can convince me he’s a true NHL defenceman. True, he misses the creative Tobias Enstrom, who covers up a lot of mistakes, but Big Buf is a forward masquerading as a blue-liner. Stick him in front of an opposing net and he’s a terror. Play him on the point on the power play with his ripper (100 shots so far this season), but play him on the wing at even strength.
• If Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray is actually listening to pitches from teams on Bobby Ryan, he should take a trip down memory lane and ask former Jets GM John Paddock if he’d like a do-over on that trade of a young Teemu Selanne to the Ducks for Oleg Tverdovsky and Chad Kilger. I don’t think that one turned out too well.

Not What Selanne Planned

from Jeff Miller of the OC Register,
So, on top of everything else – the questions about Randy Carlyle’s future, the debate about who should be traded first, the doubts about this team’s mental strength and will and drive simply to compete – we have the Ducks’ most appalling failure yet:
They’re ruining what probably will be the final season in the all-everything career of the greatest Duck ever.
They’re sending out Teemu Selanne not standing atop a pedestal but rather skidding upon his fanny.
A six-game losing streak, interrupted by one victory, and then followed by a seven-game losing streak – all before Dec. 1? If this were the sort of experience Selanne desired, he would have just slammed the penalty box door on his face.
Following his team’s most recent embarrassment – a numb 5-2 walk-over against Toronto – Selanne concluded, “There really is no answer. It seems to me that nothing works.” Other than that, his goodbye tour so far has been a real hoot.
After a practice last week, Selanne sat at his locker talking somberly about his situation. The emotion gathering behind his eyes was obvious. He looked like a man on the edge of tears.

Selanne Goes ‘Home’

from Jeff Miller of the OC Register,
In 18 NHL seasons and 1,259 NHL games and four NHL uniforms – including the Ducks twice – Teemu Selanne has been seen in every possible setting by his teammates.
Almost.
Because, on Sunday, most of the Ducks will see him in a place where they’ve never seen him before.
At home. In Finland.
“I’m sure,” Bobby Ryan said, “the fan reaction is going to be off the charts.”
“I kind of expect them to be civil,” said Toni Lydman, one of Selanne’s fellow Fins, “but you never know.”
“I think,” Cam Fowler said simply, “it’s going to be mayhem.”

Selanne Returns

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed right wing Teemu Selanne to a one-year contract through the 2011-12 NHL season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
“As he showed again last season, Teemu still has the drive, determination, and skill to play at an elite level,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “Most importantly for us, his passion comes from not just playing, but playing for the Ducks.”
Selanne, 41 (7/3/70), appeared in 73 games for the Ducks last season, scoring 31-49=80 points with a +6 rating and 49 penalty minutes (PIM). Selanne ranked third in the NHL with 16 power play goals and tied for eighth in overall scoring. Only two players in NHL history age 40-or-older have recorded more points: Detroit’s Gordie Howe in 1968-69 (103 pts., 40 yrs, 276 days) and Boston’s Johnny Bucyk in 1975-76 (83 pts., 40 yrs, 234 days).
“I’m very happy that my knee has recovered from surgery and is ready for the season,” said Selanne. “I’m excited and optimistic about what this team can do and thankful to have another opportunity to play in Anaheim.”

“So far, so good. I’ve been skating three weeks now, and I’m really optimistic. “I’d like to play one more year, but I want to be sure I can play and enjoy the game the way I always do.
“There’s still some work to do. I think the main thing right now is to try to get the muscles around the knee stronger. If I get those really strong, I think I can still play. It’s a slow process, because you lose your muscles quickly when you can’t use them the first two-three weeks after surgery.
“I’m doing rehab now. Long days: skate, work out and then I go to the physical therapist. I’m skating four-five times a week, because I want to be sure. I’ll have to make a decision between now and start of training camp.”

Selanne Will Make A Playing Decsion When He Returns To California
by Paul on 08/23/11 at 08:38 AM ET

from MTV3 (Finland and translated)
This summer, Selanne has indicated that the groove will definitely, if the operated knee arthroscopy allows it. Selanne skated the other end of the summer in Vantaa, Finland with the names of the NHL and the familiar training location is no longer a return to years later.
- Today when I left the last time the NHL Myyrmäki jäiltä, then became a little nostalgic feeling that if this is here now. Yes, it is now had it, it’s pretty nuts. The knee will not withstand the longer one, if not even take the next season, Selanne says MTV3.

From Dan Arritt at ESPN:
Ducks winger Teemu Selanne has told a newspaper in his native Finland that he plans to wait until September to make a decision on whether to return for his 20th season in the NHL.
Selanne had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in June and wants to give the joint additional time to heal before announcing his plans, according to Ilta-Sanomat, the second-largest newspaper in Finland. Selanne has been working out in Finland this summer.
Selanne turned 41 on July 3 but continued to play at a high level last season.

via Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog,
Teemu Selanne underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in his native Finland on Wednesday, which could delay his decision on whether he’ll return to the Ducks for an 18th NHL season.
Selanne’s agent, Don Baizley, confirmed to the Register on Thursday that Selanne had the procedure done after it was first reported by the website MTV3.fi. Baizley would not offer any specifics on what the surgery was supposed to repair in the knee, which was reconstructed during the 2004-05 lockout.
The Ducks also confirmed Selanne’s surgery, which was believed to be done in order to remove loose cartilage]

Time Stops For These Two
by Paul on 03/29/11 at 09:43 AM ET

from Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail,
Three cheers and a round of Geritol. It’s time to toast the two men that time forgot.
They may be old by professional sports standards. They may be older than virtually all the arenas and many of the coaches in the National Hockey League. But to see Nik Lidstrom and Teemu Selanne in action Monday night was to have witnessed two of sports greatest marvels. Old guys with game.
Let’s start with Lidstrom, the 40-year Detroit Red Wings’ defenceman who scored his 15th of the season in a loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. The goal gave him 60 points and a slice of history. No other NHL defenceman has ever been so productive at an age when most players have become ex-players and taken up golf full-time.
And honestly, it’s not just the points that underline Lidstrom’s mastery. It’s his consistency and durability. He’s never played in fewer than 76 games in 19 NHL seasons. Try explaining that one to Vancouver Canucks’ counterpart Sami Salo, who can’t stay healthy for the life of him. It’s almost inexplicable, just like a Matt Cooke elbow.

Babcock On The Kronwall Hit
by Paul on 10/25/10 at 12:55 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne called Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall a dangerous player for a hit he delivered on Saturday.
Red Wings coach Mike Babcock agrees. And that’s the way he wants him to be. But Babcock also said Monday that Kronwall is a clean player.
“I looked at the replay many times. (Kronwall) stepped up on him and got his shoulder in his chin. It’s a hockey play,’’ Babcock said. “I think one of the comments was Kronner’s dangerous. He is. That’s why we like him.
“I don’t think anything was outside the rules or the boundary of the game. Obviously, you don’t want anyone to get hurt. Teemu’s a Hall of Famer, one of my favorites. I don’t like to see him get bumped, but that’s the game.’’

from Eric Stephens tweets, Selanne:
Ducks were furious about the disparity of calls after the game and Niklas Kronwall’s non-call on apparent elbow/shoulder to Selanne’s face.
“That guy is dangerous out there. One of these days, somebody’s going to get him. I know that. It’s just a matter of time when.”
More Selanne: “Every 50-50 call is going to go in their favor. We knew it. It’s not a secret for anybody.”
(more) “As long as I’ve played here, it’s always the same story. You almost know. They get at least three power plays in the first period.”

The State of Hockey in Finland
by Phil Davies on 09/28/10 at 07:25 PM ET
Comments (2)
If there was ever a National team program historically greater than the sum of its parts, it would be Team Finland. Despite not having the offensive depth of many of their Elite Seven rivals, the Finnish National Team has repeatedly fared well in recent international best-on-best competition. After enduring many decades of lopsided defeats internationally at the hands of Canada, the former Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and longtime nemesis Sweden, the Finnish hockey program made great strides in the 1990’s, culminating with a World Championship in 1995. In addition, Finland has won more Olympic Hockey medals (1 silver, 2 bronze), than any other nation, since the introduction of NHL players to the Games in 1998.
Finland’s success can be attributed to a strong emphasis on teamwork and the fact that unlike their European rivals, hockey is indisputably the number one sport in their homeland, which has led to the implementation of adequately funded development programs and a strong domestic league in SM-liiga. More than any other European team, Finland employs a fast skating, tight forechecking, North American style of play, augmented by strong defensive zone coverage and consistently elite goaltending. The rinks in Finland have been adjusted to enhance the tight forechecking style of play, by adopting a size that is halfway between the dimensions of NHL and IIHF standards. Furthermore, in an effort to aid the National Team’s development programs, numerous goaltending schools have been created, and often led, by the country’s top puck stoppers. This has led to the emergence of many elite young goalies in the NHL, such as Tuukka Rask, Pekke Rinne, Antti Niemi and perhaps Kari Lehtonen, if he can find health and consistency in a Dallas Stars uniform.

It looks like Teemu Selanne will be back for his 18th season in the National Hockey League.
The veteran forward told Finnish sports magazine Sports Journal on Friday that he intends to return for ‘at least another year’ and a contract with the Anaheim Ducks should be done over the next few days.
“I made the decision to continue my career,” he told the magazine. “In fact, it has been clear for a long time. Negotiations are now ready to begin.”...
“I informed (Anaheim) that if they re-build (the team), I’ll then do something else,” Selanne said. “With the guys that the team has acquired, I’m convinced that we can still succeed.”

Selanne Plans To Play If Ducks Remain Competitive
by Paul on 06/16/10 at 08:35 AM ET

via the Helsingin Sanomat,
The 2007 Stanley Cup winner and the all-time points leader in men’s Olympic ice hockey, who has played in the NHL since the 1992-93 season, told the Finnish daily Turun Sanomat that he will quit if the team announces plans to perform a rejuvenation operation and start building a new squad.
Selänne, who turns 40 early next month, said that his continuing with the team is likely “if Anaheim decides that is still wants to win next season and if it wants to keep the team more or less the same.”
Selänne believes that the situation is very similar to that of his fellow countryman Saku Koivu, 35, who is still without a contract. The ball - or the puck - is in the team’s court so to speak.
“Saku, too, is in a situation where he wants to continue to play in a winning team”, Selänne commented about his teammate to the Turku-based newspaper.

Will Niedermayer And Selanne Be Back?
by Paul on 04/11/10 at 02:06 PM ET

from Curtis Zupke of the OC Register,
Tonight could be the final game for Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne. Both are playing out one-year contracts and, in what has become an annual occurrence, will decide their future in the coming weeks.
Niedermayer, 36, and Selanne, 39, each said he has not talked with General Manager Bob Murray about when they will decide their future, but the team would like them to do so before the June draft.
“I’m sure I’ll come to a decision quickly,” Niedermayer said. “I’ll decide before then.”
In the aftermath of missing the postseason for the first time since 2004, the Ducks are in store for an intriguing summer, and Niedermayer sets their offseason strategy in motion.
He has been critical of his play this season. His minus-12 rating is the worst of his career, although that likely has to do with the struggling team play.

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
One major milestone down, one more to go.
Reaching the 600-goal plateau was one thing. But if Teemu Selanne scores two more goals in the 11 games left on the Anaheim Ducks’ regular-season schedule, he will pass Jari Kurri for the most NHL goals ever scored by a Finnish player.
“I know, that will be a huge honor if it’s going to happen,” Selanne told ESPN.com on Monday. “I had his picture on my wall when I was younger. Now he’s a really good friend of mine. It would really be an honor.”
Kurri, the clutch triggerman for Wayne Gretzky in Edmonton in the 1980s, knew Selanne would pass him one day.
“I accepted that a long time ago already,” Kurri, with a chuckle, me Monday from Helsinki.

Ducks Beat Sharks But Lose Selanne And Getzlaf
by Paul on 03/15/10 at 07:44 AM ET

from Robyn Norwood of the LA Times,
It was a feel-good game until the third period, when two of the Ducks’ best players — Teemu Selanne and Ryan Getzlaf — left the ice with injuries within minutes of each other and didn’t return.
Selanne, who scored his 599th NHL goal earlier in the game and kept buzzing around the net for No. 600, slid hard into the boards after tripping on a stick on a scoring attempt with 18:16 left. After getting up very slowly — first to his hands and knees, then to one knee — he skated off unassisted and did not return.
A team official said Selanne was “shaken up” and suffered an upper-body injury.
Soon after Selanne was hurt, Getzlaf reinjured his left ankle, which he sprained before the Olympics. He later left the arena wearing a walking boot and is considered to be day-to-day.

Selanne Out With Fractured Jaw

via AnaheimDucks.com,
Teemu Selanne suffered a fractured jaw in the third period of Anaheim’s 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins at Honda Center, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle told reporters after the game.
Carlyle said Selanne “unavailable for a number of days, weeks here going forward” and that the fracture will be surgically repaired tomorrow. “We’ll have to see what kind of timeframe they are going to give us with it,” he said.
Selanne was hit in the face by the puck with 8:29 left in the game following a shot by teammate Ryan Whitney that deflected off the stick of Boston’s Miroslav Satan and bounced off the ice. He went down to the ice holding his face and was helped to the locker room while holding a towel to his bleeding face. He did not return to the game.
“It’s a tough loss,” Carlyle said. “The puck hit the bottom of somebody’s stick, went and hit the ice and then bounced back up and hit him. It’s one of those things that you’d very rarely would see unfortunately for Teeme and unforunately for us. We finally started to get some bodies back in our lineup and get our lines setted. That is just the way it goes and injuries are a part of it.”

Selanne Close To Return

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,
As the Ducks piece together a lineup missing several offensive performers for tonight’s game against Minnesota, they did reveal some good news in that Teemu Selanne could be back within the next few games.
Coach Randy Carlyle said that Selanne will accompany the team on its three-game road trip that begins on New Year’s Eve in Dallas. Selanne has been out since Dec. 3 when he suffered a broken bone in his left hand in a game ironically against the Stars.
It’s doubtful that Selanne will make an appearance on the trip but …
“Teemu’s time frame is after the first of January,” Carlyle said. ”So we will take him with us to skate. He will wear a protective device. We’ll probably have an X-ray or an MRI done on his hand before he’s cleared to play.”

Teemu Selanne Out With Broken Hand

via Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog, Ducks right wing Teemu Selanne suffered a broken in his left hand as a result of getting hit with a shot by Dallas Stars defenseman Karlis Skrastins in the second period and the goal-scoring forward could be out for a while.
Selanne left the ice following his third shift in the period and took X-rays, which revealed a fracture near the second knuckle. He will fly home tonight and see a hand specialist in the morning, where he will be re-evaluated and a determination will be made if surgery is needed.
Selanne said he considered not making the trip to Dallas because of the stomach flu that he’s had the past two days since Tuesday’s game against the Kings. The winger joined the team this morning and assisted on Saku Koivu’s goal just 1:28 into the game.

Legal Shootout Goal?
by Paul on 04/11/09 at 11:19 AM ET
Comments (7)
from Curtis Zupke of the Ducks Blog,
On the Ducks’ fourth shootout attempt, Teemu Selanne skated in, came to a stop and lifted the puck over Turco, who was on his side and did a two-pad stack to no avail.
It ended up as the game winner.
NHL rules regarding shootouts have dictated that if either the player or the puck is continually moving forward then the play is legal.
Turco gave Selanne credit for the move, but he wondered if the rule should get a closer look.
“It didn’t really surprise me,” Turco said of the move. “There was nothing I could do once you get off your skates. But they should freshen the rules on dead stops, which is not right. It’s not legal, I guess, if that’s the right word. It doesn’t have any effect on our season but certainly (it did) theirs. It’s a good play. It’s legal.”

from Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun,
“I’m happy I’m still playing,” Selanne said after a recent shootout victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. “Everything starts (with passion), if you don’t have it, you shouldn’t be playing.”
The former Winnipeg Jets sniper was happy to reflect on his early days in the NHL.
One of the obvious highlights came when Selanne smashed Mike Bossy’s rookie record for goals with 76 back in 1992-93.
“It took a long time to realize what I did in my first year because it was such a roller-coaster,” said Selanne, who had 132 points in 84 games during that memorable season. “Every day was a great day and I was so hungry to have success and score more and more. Everything was new and I was so excited. Right now, I think about 76 goals and it’s incredible. It was just very special.
“The whole game has changed. I miss the old times.”...
While he has another year remaining on the two-year deal he signed last summer, Selanne isn’t sure if he’ll be back for another season.

Selanne Trying To Put The Power Back In His Play
by Paul on 02/09/09 at 10:16 AM ET

from Curtis Zupke at Ducks Blog,
Teemu Selanne has had enough injuries in his career that he knows it takes time to re-gain what has been lost.
In his case, he is trying to build up his quadiceps muscle after he missed five weeks with a laceration to the leg.
“Obviously the strength is not back,” Selanne said. “It’s funny how much muscle you lose when you don’t use it in 2-3 weeks.”
Selanne has played six games since his return from the injury and has yet to score a power play goal. He had an NHL-leading 13 power play goals in his first 27 games but has none in his past 12.
His drought is a microcosm of the Ducks, who are 0-for-9 on the power play over their past three games - the first time they have gone three games without a power play goal since an 0-11 span in mid-December.

via a press release from the Anaheim Ducks,
Teemu Selanne underwent an MRI this evening that revealed a cut in his left quad muscle (injury occurred last night @ EDM). It did not damage any tendons or other connective tissue, and no surgery will be required. He is expected to return to the Ducks lineup in 4-6 weeks.

Selanne Suffers Leg Injury
by Paul on 12/20/08 at 09:43 AM ET

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog,
Selanne suffered a laceration on his lower left thigh when a collision with Oilers defenseman Denis Grebeshkov resulted in Selanne getting twisted to the point that his right skate sliced his opposite leg.
“I knew right away that I got cut,” Selanne said before leaving the locker room with the aid of crutches. “It was scary how much blood was coming out. It was all over. You couldn’t even stop it.”
A doctor on scene halted the bleeding and stabilized Selanne’s leg but chose not to investigate the extent of the damage for fear of adding to it, Selanne said. The Ducks planned to take Selanne on a Friday night flight to Vancouver, and then send him to Anaheim on Saturday to undergo an MRI exam with their own medical personnel.
“The MRI is going to tell exactly if it’s surgery or not,” Selanne said. “It’s just bad luck, but it could be worse. There’s a bright side. That’s how I’m going to look at it.”
At first, the Ducks broadcast team did not know wear Selanne was cut, but about half way through the video, they realized it was his own skate that did the damage, Just a freaky accident and watch below…

Selanne Frustrated With Ducks Mindset
by Paul on 11/15/08 at 09:29 PM ET

from Randy Youngman of the OC Register,
Our whole mentality has to change,” a frowning Selanne said, standing in the middle of an otherwise empty locker room. “We’re thinking too much about scoring right now. We have to get back to our old mindset.”
And that is?
“The last three years, the success we’ve had here . . . our main focus was to shut down goals-against,” said Selanne, who has produced 18 points in 18 games. “We could always find a way to score three or four goals, and sometimes two was enough. But right now it’s more like, let’s score more than them, and the whole mentality has changed.
“We can’t expect to win games 5 to 4. This team has never been like that. Some nights – here and there, maybe – but not on a regular basis. We need to start thinking differently.”

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,
It’s hard to believe it was 16 years ago that Ducks right wing Teemu Selanne and St. Louis Blues center Keith Tkachuk were part of a tremendous rookie class with the former Winnipeg Jets….
“I’m glad I had the opportunity to go through that first season with him,” Tkachuk said. “It was one of the most phenomenal things I’ve ever seen. He was outstanding. No one knew anything about him. He just came in and dominated. No one could keep up with his speed, and everything he touched, everything he shot, went in.”

Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas was named Second Star and Philadelphia Flyers left wing Simon Gagne earned Third Star honors.

Selanne Still Going Strong

from Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province,
Just 11 games into the season, it’s clear Selanne has lost little in his stride or shot with six goals. He’s on pace for 44 goals after scoring three power-play markers Wednesday in a 5-4 overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
With 558 career goals, Selanne is now 21st on the all-time scoring list, two ahead of Johnny Bucyk and just two back of Guy Lafleur.
“What impressed me [Wednesday] was that he worked like a dog, and you usually don’t expect a player in his late 30s to be your hardest-working player,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said Thursday in a telephone interview

Selanne Signs For Two Years
by Paul on 09/28/08 at 03:05 PM ET

from Dan Wood at Ducks Blog,
Right wing Teemu Selanne is scheduled to be in the Ducks’ lineup for Sunday’s 5 p.m. exhibition game against the Vancouver Canucks at Honda Center after signing a two-year, $5.25 million contract earlier in the day.
Two years? Perhaps next summer, unlike the past two, we won’t have to endure persistent and ridiculous Internet rumors that Selanne is headed to play in Montreal, Dallas, Sweden, Russia, Timbuktu or wherever else….
The signing of Selanne once again pushes the Ducks above the NHL’s $56.7 million salary ceiling for this season, by about $1.225 million…
The Ducks’ current salary-cap projection includes having rookie winger Bobby Ryan on the NHL roster, which isn’t a given, but appears more likely than not. Were the Ducks to assign Ryan to their American League affiliate, the Iowa Chops, the Ducks would slide more than $500,000 beneath the cap with that move alone.
added 7:03pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
The pertinent numbers: Selanne will earn $3.25 million in the first year of the deal and $2 million in the second. It’s a total package of $5.25 million, with no performance bonuses, so the annual salary-cap charge is $2.625 million – reasonable by today’s standards for a player of Selanne’s caliber, who will play in the Ducks’ top six.
Presumably, the Ducks are convinced of his commitment too, because if Selanne decides not to play next year, they take a salary-cap hit anyway (a function of his being over the age of 35).

Selanne Thinking Olympics - May Sign for Two Years
by Paul on 09/20/08 at 12:09 PM ET

from Dan Wood of the OC Register,
A year after being nearly convinced that his hockey career was over, right wing Teemu Selanne is now thinking about possibly playing beyond this season.
“The Olympic year next year (2010 in Vancouver) is something that’s in my mind,” Selanne said. “I’ve played four times in the Olympics, and it’s an unbelievable experience. I know it’s going to be the last time when NHL players are going to be participating in the Olympics, so obviously it’s something quite special.”

via the Anaheim Ducks,
Teemu Selanne has signed a PRO TRYOUT AGREEMENT with the Ducks. Negotiations on a new standard player contract between Selanne and the Ducks will continue. The pro tryout agreement allows Selanne to participate in all training camp activities. He is expected to skate with the club tomorrow morning at Anaheim ICE.

Ducks Need Cap Relief To Sign Selanne
by Paul on 09/03/08 at 06:24 AM ET

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,
“There has been no change in our situation,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said Tuesday. “We’re still evaluating different options. We’re not in position to do anything with Teemu at this point in time. That may change. We’ll see.”
The issues are no different than they have been for nearly two months, with the Ducks more than $2 million over the NHL’s $56.7 million salary cap. Until they find a way to clear that hurdle, the Ducks can’t sign Selanne.

Imagine If They All Left

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Mats Sundin may be getting all the ink, but he is not the only established, prominent NHL player unsure of his plans for the coming season.
Without nearly the same interest or fanfare, three of his contemporaries — Joe Sakic, Teemu Selanne and Brendan Shanahan — are all facing a similar predicament.
Call them the 4-S club, a quartet of future Hall of Famers pondering what a life without hockey might be like and not sure whether the time is right to walk away.
How dramatic would their departures be? Consider that with Jaromir Jagr shuffling off to Russia, that group represents four of the NHL’s top six active-points leaders. All, except Sundin, have won the Stanley Cup.
continued and good to see Eric back, hockey season must be getting close!

Selanne Taking His Time With Decision
by Paul on 07/27/08 at 07:48 PM ET

from Randy Youngman of the OC Register,
There actually was one Selanne sighting recently, if the Finnish video of Teemu playing tennis doubles was shot recently. I forwarded it to Ducks general manager Brian Burke, who didn’t seem amused.
“If anyone spots him,” Burke said, “have him call me.”
What’s the rush? Just because training camp opens next month and the Ducks open their 2008 exhibition schedule Sept. 24 against the Sharks?
I’m guessing Selanne, an unrestricted free agent, will re-sign — for whatever the Ducks have to offer under the salary cap — as soon as Burke makes another roster move (perhaps trading Mathieu Schneider) to reduce the payroll.
By now, everyone in the organization should realize there is Pacific Daylight Time — and then there is Teemu Time.

Let Selanne Go

From Mike Boone at Habs Inside/Out,
RDS reported that Saku Koivu was trying to persuade Teemu Selanne to join the Canadiens.
I’ll believe it when I see the Finnish Flash at training camp – which, for Selanne, begins in February.
For more rumors, Spector’s got the latest on Jeff Carter, Patrick Marleau, Bobby Holik, Radim Vrbata and others.

Selanne Believes

from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,
Before the game, Selanne said he saw only “one way” for the Ducks to go—up.
“I really believe this is the group that can do it,” he said.
“It’s going to be tough, but there’s teams that have done it before, so that’s a good sign.”
He had extra incentive Friday, because the end of the season could also bring the end of his glorious NHL career.
After a 48-goal season and splendid playoff performance, he retired after the Ducks won the Cup last June. The timing seemed perfect. What better ending could there be than going out on top, surrounded by friends and family and knowing that your name will soon be engraved on that great shiny trophy?

from the Press-Enterprise,
“I’m talking to guys who have ice packs and all kinds of things, my old teammates and buddies on other teams, and they’re saying, ‘It’s been a tough time,’ ” Selanne said with a laugh Saturday afternoon. “And I say, ‘Well, I feel great.’ I highly recommend that we play only 25 games before the real season starts and go from there.
“I’ve never felt this good. Obviously, the break was really good for me, mentally and physically, and hopefully I can take advantage of that.”
