Selanne Taking His Time With Decision

from Randy Youngman of the OC Register,

There actually was one Selanne sighting recently, if the Finnish video of Teemu playing tennis doubles was shot recently. I forwarded it to Ducks general manager Brian Burke, who didn’t seem amused.

“If anyone spots him,” Burke said, “have him call me.”

What’s the rush? Just because training camp opens next month and the Ducks open their 2008 exhibition schedule Sept. 24 against the Sharks?

I’m guessing Selanne, an unrestricted free agent, will re-sign — for whatever the Ducks have to offer under the salary cap — as soon as Burke makes another roster move (perhaps trading Mathieu Schneider) to reduce the payroll.

By now, everyone in the organization should realize there is Pacific Daylight Time — and then there is Teemu Time.

Let Selanne Go

From Mike Boone at Habs Inside/Out,

RDS reported that Saku Koivu was trying to persuade Teemu Selanne to join the Canadiens.

I’ll believe it when I see the Finnish Flash at training camp – which, for Selanne, begins in February.

Selanne Believes

from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,

Before the game, Selanne said he saw only “one way” for the Ducks to go—up.

“I really believe this is the group that can do it,” he said.

“It’s going to be tough, but there’s teams that have done it before, so that’s a good sign.”

He had extra incentive Friday, because the end of the season could also bring the end of his glorious NHL career.

After a 48-goal season and splendid playoff performance, he retired after the Ducks won the Cup last June. The timing seemed perfect. What better ending could there be than going out on top, surrounded by friends and family and knowing that your name will soon be engraved on that great shiny trophy?

Morning Line

from the Press-Enterprise,

“I’m talking to guys who have ice packs and all kinds of things, my old teammates and buddies on other teams, and they’re saying, ‘It’s been a tough time,’ ” Selanne said with a laugh Saturday afternoon. “And I say, ‘Well, I feel great.’ I highly recommend that we play only 25 games before the real season starts and go from there.

“I’ve never felt this good. Obviously, the break was really good for me, mentally and physically, and hopefully I can take advantage of that.”

Teemu Still Has Work To Do

fromm George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,

Retirement, says Teemu Selanne, is something he’ll delight in falling into, like a king-sized, eiderdown-soft hotel bed early in the a.m. on the 15th day of a 16-day road trip.

A lot of men who play games for a living—an embarrassing number, actually—cling to the life like a shied tomcat run up the living-room curtains. They only leave by force, kicking and screaming, feeling bitter and abandoned.

It’s all they know. It’s what defines them.

note: added the Selanne press conference video at the bottom of the post at 8:40pm.

more

added 4:18pm, via the Anaheim Ducks,

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that right wing Teemu Selanne has signed a one-year contract and will join the team for the remainder of the 2007-2008 season. Selanne, who was an unrestricted free agent, will practice with the team today and travel on the club’s eight-game, 15-day road trip (team departs Tuesday).

“It took Teemu several months to determine if he had the passion and determination to return to the NHL, and we are thrilled to have him back,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Brian Burke. “This is a player who scored 48 goals last year and showed no signs of slowing down.”

Selanne- Very Good Chance I’m Going To Come Back

from the LA Times,

Teemu Selanne gave the strongest indication yet that he may come out of semi-retirement when he said Friday there’s a “very good chance” he’ll return to play for the Ducks.

Selanne insisted he would not make a final decision until he talks with General Manager Brian Burke next week, but the 10-time All-Star forward admitted he is leaning in a certain direction.

“It could happen. I’m leaning one way. I’m not going to say which way,” Selanne said. “Right now, I feel there’s a very good chance I’m going to come back. When? That’s the question. When I feel ready. Every week, I’ve been feeling better and better and better.

With the Hockey News report from yesterday and now this, well, it appears Teemu will soon be back.

Selanne Still Undecided

from the LA Times,

Teemu Selanne said the only reason he has not retired is because he believes the Ducks have the pieces in place to win a second consecutive Stanley Cup and is trying to decide if he wants to be part of that.

“Every time I come to the games, I get really excited,” he said before attending Monday night’s home game against Nashville. “But when I go home, it’s with mixed feelings.”

Selanne, 37, said he is on a program where he’ll skate up to five days this week with the intention of making a final decision in “about two weeks.”

And if he does return, it will be with the Ducks and no one else.

“I have to know if I’m ready to start pushing it to get back to the level I want to be at,” said Selanne, who had 48 goals last season. “There’s no way I’m coming back at 90 or 95%. It has to be 100%.”

Selanne Talk

I received numerous emails over the last few days asking why I wasn’t reporting the “Selanne to play in Sweden” story.  My response was I didn’t believe it was true…

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,

Several reports out of Sweden recently suggested Selanne was close to signing with Leksand, the current team of former NHL goaltender Ed Belfour.

“I know nothing about this,” agent Don Baizley told the thehockeynews.com. “I haven’t spoken with Teemu in 2-3 weeks and I find it hard to believe this would be true.”

Burke Talks

Brian Burke was interviewed by Chris Simpson tonight at the Bruins/Leafs game.

On Teemu Selanne, Burke said they are expecting to see his picture on a milk carton soon, they haven’t heard from him at all.

Regarding Scott Niedermayer, Burke mentioned there are indications he wants to come back, but they have not heard anything from Scott about it.

added 8:22pm, While we are on the subject of Brian Burke…

from Brian Milner of the Globe and Mail,

Most Canadians know Brian Burke as the forceful, combative hockey executive who shaped the Anaheim Ducks into the reigning Stanley Cup champions and who wouldn’t seem out of place trading elbows with an opponent in front of the net.

What few people know is that Mr. Burke’s hugely successful career in the National Hockey League was built on a strong legal foundation that continues to play an important role in how he views the sports world and his place in it.

No Kidding- Ducks Miss Semi-Retired Duo

from Mark Whicker of the OC Register,

Losing Niedermayer and Selanne, which would be roughly comparable to Detroit losing Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg, sends ripples through the roster and diminishes everyone else. Few have been more disadvantaged than McDonald.

“Absolutely, it’s frustrating,” he said at Wednesday morning’s skate. “There have been a lot of different combinations, which is the coach’s prerogative and something you have to try to do to turn things around.

“Missing” Ducks Still Undecided

from the CP via NHL.com,

Selanne said the Ducks haven’t pushed him to make a decision, and he also offered no timetable.

“If I’m going to come back, it has to come from inside,” he said. “I want to make sure this decision is right.”

What if Niedermayer calls and says he’s coming back?

“I’m going to have second thoughts,” Selanne said, smiling.

Duck Hunch

from Eric Duhatschek at the Globe on Hockey Blog,

Call it a hunch, but after being around the team for a few days now, I’ve done a complete about-face on this issue. A month ago, I thought both Niedermayer and Selanne were done. At the moment, I’d say it’s more likely that they’ll play at some later date this year rather than retire, in the hopes of winning back-to-back championships.

Selanne Waiting To Make The Right Decision

from the LA Times,

Much like Scott Niedermayer is wrestling with thoughts of retirement, so too is Selanne.

“The decision is way harder than I thought,” he told a small group of reporters at Anaheim Ice on Friday. “I thought it was going to be an easy decision and just move on. Obviously, everything has just been unbelievable here. When you have played something since you were 6 years old. . . . Now I know how players say how hard it is to retire….

I’m guessing I’m going to see how I feel when the season starts and I’m watching the games,” he said. “By then, I’ll know for sure whether I want to go back and play again. But right now, I feel at this point, there’s no way I can be as motivated” as needed.

“If I don’t feel the same way the next month or so, then it’s time to do something. It’s unbelievable, [this] decision. But it has to be right.”

read on (reg. req.)...and Selanne says he will only play for the Ducks.
