“What we do is we play a structured game so that the skill people can be really skilled. When you’re all over the rink you end up checking one another,” Babcock said. “The way we play is a real simple way, but because everyone knows where to go and what to do you all look better. So, he’s just got to find his little niche in that. He’s playing with real good players, but on this team we don’t need him being cute or making any cute little plays. We need him being big, strong, physical, going to the net and hanging onto the puck. We have Pav and Fil and Z to make all those cute little plays.
“Just by talking to him, he wants to be that (powerful player),” Babcock continued. “Well, if he wants to be that, that’s half the battle for a coach.”
Since Bertuzzi wants to prolong his career beyond just this season, he plans on being the model student all year long.

Big, bad Bert claims to be not quite as big nor as bad as he’s been made out to be after enjoying his first informal skate with his new Detroit Red Wings teammates Wednesday at City Arena.
A rather chatty Todd Bertuzzi, the six-foot-three forward who has trimmed down to a svelte 225 pounds, dealt with the usual issues of his weight and the ugly Steve Moore incident before moving on to discuss his good health and the opportunity to return to Detroit.
Bertuzzi had a brief stop in Detroit in 2007 after being acquired at the February trade deadline.
“(I’m) really happy to be back, especially knowing pretty much everyone in the room,” said Bertuzzi, who had five goals and 11 points in his 24 games as a Wing coming off back surgery that season.

Bertuzzi In The Lineup Tonight For The London Knights

A big NHL name — as in six-foot-three and 235 pounds — has been added to the London Knights lineup for Saturday night’s Euro Can Cup game against Munich.
Todd Bertuzzi, the veteran NHLer who recently signed with Detroit, is driving to London from his Kitchener home for tonight’s game — and possibly Monday night’s tournament final.
“Putting Todd Bertuzzi on the ice is an incredible addition,” said Pat Curcio, who organized the tournament that features three European squads and a team featuring Knights alumni and other NHLers.

Red Wings brass is pretty infallible, but should GM Ken Holland and friends not have learned the first time around? That would be in 2007, when Detroit picked up Bertuzzi for a Stanley Cup run that ended prematurely in the Western Conference final with a series loss to the eventual champion Anaheim Ducks. That would be the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Red Wings (shared with Buffalo), who had home-ice advantage in the series and would win the Cup the following season – once Bertuzzi was gone.
Though I wish Big Bert no specific ill will, recent history has shown that everything the man touches turns to ash. His trade from Vancouver to Florida was an unmitigated disaster for the Panthers, who lost Roberto Luongo in the deal and sloughed Bertuzzi off on Detroit after just seven games of service (karma-wise, injuries have followed the power forward around like buzzards in recent years).

There are many players still on the market and unfortunately a good chunk of them will never again play in the NHL. If you consider yourself picky, you might look at the UFA list and say there are only a couple names worth considering.
It all depends on what a team is looking for – from Maxim Afinogenov to Mike Zigomanis, there’s a role for a lot of these guys. One UFA who continues to catch my eye is the enigmatic Todd Bertuzzi.Say what you want about Big Bert and his past crimes of poor judgment, he can still be a useful player on a handful of teams.
The days of Bertuzzi being a 40-goal scorer and point-a-game player on a top line are long gone. So are the stipends of $5 million plus per season.

“I’m speaking to about three teams right now,” he said. “We’re just trying to figure things out.

Injuries are getting to be a way of life for the Calgary Flames.
The latest to go down is forward Todd Bertuzzi, who did not turn up for the morning skate at Scotiabank Place as the Flames prepared for Tuesday night’s game against the Ottawa Senators. Head coach Mike Keenan said Bertuzzi has a lower-body injury, suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and was left at home for rehabilitation.
“Todd is day-to-day,” Keenan said of Bertuzzi’s status. “We’ll have to get some reports on him and then decide.”

Bertuzzi A Marked Man

Watching Todd Bertuzzi get mugged by Alexandre Burrows Tuesday night, you couldn’t help but feel bad for the Calgary Flames winger.
Pushed, whacked and prodded by the Vancouver Canucks’ agitator into the bench, Bertuzzi tried to be the better man and get back into the play.
Jabbed some more, he looked pleadingly for a man in stripes who would see the abuse and make a call.
None came, and Bertuzzi finally had enough. He poked back and took a coincidental roughing minor with Burrows....
“Well, you know what, he’s a big brute,” said Flames defenceman Adrian Aucoin.
“He’s obviously a marked man.
“I’m not complaining about the officiating, but he’s got a reputation and obviously he’s got to be careful out there. It’s got to be an obvious penalty to go the other way on him.”

Bertuzzi Hasn’t Learned A Thing

If Bertuzzi were just lumbering and slow, that would be one thing. But it’s clear Bertuzzi has absolutely zero ability to manage his emotions and continues to get his teams in trouble by taking stupid penalties.
His flying elbow at Daniel Sedin’s head Saturday night was easily a suspendable offense and proves Bertuzzi has learned nothing from the Steve Moore incident. Then his hit from behind on Ryan Johnson later in the period almost cost the Calgary Flames the game in regulation time.

The Good Guy Charade

...Even Flames President Ken King has said that Bertuzzi, having paid his penalty (an indefinite suspension that amounted to 20 NHL games, approximately $500,000 in lost salary, plus assault charges that yielded a year’s probation with community service and no criminal record), deserves a second chance. Despite polls that indicate a split opinion in that regard, King maintains that fans in Calgary are willing to give it to the notorious forward.
Funny, but I can’t help but wonder who speaks for Steve Moore.
Moore can’t say much on his own. The matter, more than four years removed from the terrible event, has still not made its way into court. Because of that, there is a moratorium regarding public comments on the case in Canada.

Keenan, who coached Bertuzzi when the two were with the Vancouver Canucks in the late 1990s, said he’s excited to see what the six-foot-three, 226-pound forward can accomplish this season.
‘’He’s more experienced than when I coached him,’’ Keenan said. ‘’He’s in a good space mentally. He’s positive about himself and about his opportunity here he views this I’m sure as a good new start.”
Keenan confirmed he’ll test out Bertuzzi on Calgary’s top line to start training camp.

Wonder why Todd Bertuzzi wound up with No. 7 with the Flames when he’s always worn either 4 or 44 as an NHLer (and before that as an OHL star)? Roger Millions of Sportsnet asked Bertuzzi that very question today at the Flames’ charity golf tournament luncheon and this was the response:
“Obviously, I’ve always worn 4. I think it was just time for a change. Me and a couple of buddies were having a beer and trying to figure out what to do (about his sweater number) and one of the players that came up who I’ve always idolized is Phil Esposito. So I thought I’d go with it and see where that goes.”

The Risk Of Playing

Deciding what’s an acceptable risk of danger when suiting up for an NHL contest will be the key should the case proceed to trial, says a source with a legal background and knowledge of the situation. The source, who requested anonymity, told the Herald any trial will likely come down to the issue of what level of risk Moore assumed that night by simply suiting up against the Canucks in Vancouver.
The source feels Bertuzzi and the NHL will try to make the case that, by playing despite the threats of violence, Moore accepted a higher level of risk.

Crawford Points At Bertuzzi

Former Vancouver coach Marc Crawford claims that Todd Bertuzzi acted in “direct disobedience” to instructions from the Canucks bench during the March 8, 2004 NHL game in which he attacked Colorado forward Steve Moore, breaking his neck and ending his career, according to court documents obtained by the Toronto Star.
Crawford, in documents filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, pleads that the Vancouver coaching staff was trying to get Bertuzzi off the ice before his infamous sucker punch on Moore.

Craig Conroy has a theory, and it’s likely to make Flames fans giddy with anticipation.
“We’re not in the offensive mode like we were with Juice (Kristian Huselius) and Tangs (Alex Tanguay), but we’re kind of like getting back to the team of ‘04 with grit,” said the veteran Flames centre.

For all the reasons Todd Bertuzzi chose to make his NHL next stop in Calgary, the primary factor was not the money, but the opportunity — to play with Flames’ captain Jarome Iginla.
“I gotta to say, Jarome is 100 per cent why I’m a Calgary Flame,” said Bertuzzi. “I had great talks with him. Everything he said about the organization and the city was nothing but positive. Haven’t talked to my family, we decided it was a good opportunity for us and we couldn’t pass it by.”

Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the signing of free agent forward Todd Bertuzzi.
“Todd is a proven scorer with the ability to play both wings,” said Sutter. “He expressed to us that he wanted to play in Canada and that desire along with signing him to a one year deal was important to our philosophy. He wanted to play on a good team and it fit our money. Additionally, our captain, Jarome Iginla, was a strong supporter of Todd and wanted him on our team.”

So naturally, your first thought is, what could they possibly be thinking?
How could the Calgary Flames, with their eyes wide open, possibly sign Todd Bertuzzi to a one-year contract with the NHL team? After all that happened — the Steve Moore incident and the persistent distraction that it had become; the decline in production, the injuries — after all that, how could the Flames assume the risk of putting Bertuzzi in their line-up next season, a year in which they legitimately think they can challenge for a Stanley Cup?
The official explanations will be coming later today, on a conference call with the general manager, Darryl Sutter, but let’s start with a couple of threads that need to be pulled.

The Anaheim Ducks are parting ways with Todd Bertuzzi, as the club has placed the veteran winger on waivers with the intention to buyout the remaining season of his contract with the organization.
added 3:57pm, The Anaheim Ducks have placed Todd Bertuzzi on unconditional waivers for the purpose of buying out his contract. If Bertuzzi is not claimed, he will clear waivers tomorrow morning (June 28) at 9 a.m. Pacific Time.

Bertuzzi In A Perfect Situation

If he were still in Vancouver or playing in another hockey-first market, Bertuzzi’s lack of output would be a major topic of discussion. Yet the offensive struggles barely register in Anaheim as he’s merely been one of many contributors of a veteran-laden team that’s on the verge of clinching a playoff spot for the third consecutive season.
After seven-plus polarizing seasons with the Canucks, Bertuzzi is glad to not be the center of attention.
“You’ve got a lot of real good guys in this room,” Bertuzzi said. “It makes coming down to the rink pretty enjoyable when you’ve got an atmosphere like that. A pretty easy team to fit into and find your niche.
“At this time of my career, it’s a perfect situation for me to be in. Right now, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

The Vancouver Canucks’ general manager has put another twist to the Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore debacle, suggesting in court documents released today that Moore was not specifically targeted for revenge by then-Canucks coach Marc Crawford.
In an Aug. 23 depostion, Vancouver Canucks general manger Dave Nonis told lawyers: “I have heard that Crawford pointed to a number of players and said that they must—‘… they got to pay the price tonight.’

Ducks’ Bertuzzi Near Full Recovery

The Ducks are anticipating the return of forward Todd Bertuzzi, who appears to be near a full recovery from the symptoms related to the concussion he suffered on Oct. 14 against Minnesota.
The exact date of that return remains the final question. But Bertuzzi has been cleared for full contact and is expected to practice Tuesday at Anaheim Ice, General Manager Brian Burke said today. And it is possible, he said, that Bertuzzi will accompany the team to Dallas for its game Wednesday against the Stars.
“I anticipate that for the first time, we’ll have our team all together,” Burke said.

While not denying that the apparent concussion suffered by newly acquired winger Todd Bertuzzi in Sunday’s 2-0 loss to the visiting Minnesota Wild “puts pressure on other people,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle chose to look at the club’s latest problem another way. With a matchup against the powerful Detroit Red Wings on tap Monday night at Honda Center, Carlyle challenged his players to each raise their game by “10 percent.” Certainly, the Ducks are hurting. They are short a winger legitimately capable of playing on the first or second line, and will be short two as long as Bertuzzi is sidelined.

Bertuzzi Questionable Tonight

Ducks winger Todd Bertuzzi is questionable for tonight’s home opener against Boston because of a strained groin suffered in last week’s loss to Columbus.
Bertuzzi said the groin continued to bother him Saturday night in Pittsburgh, which was probably the reason he logged only 14:04 of ice time and was largely ineffective.
“Like anyone else with a groin injury, it limits your strength and your skating,” said Bertuzzi, who has a goal and an assist in five games. “Just came to a point where I couldn’t go anymore.”
*also, from CBC’s Around the League, “the Ducks are expecting both netminder J.S. Giguere and Samuel Pahlsson to return to the lineup tonight.”

Bertuzzi Hasn’t Put it Behind Him

Former Detroit Red Wings forward Sheldon Kennedy looks at Todd Bertuzzi and sees himself in Bertuzzi’s eyes and facial expressions. Kennedy thought when he went public in 1996 with details of how he was sexually abused by Graham James, his junior hockey coach, it would set him free, but it took years of dealing with the issue and confronting how it had impacted his life before Kennedy could move beyond the pain.
Though’s he not spoken to Bertuzzi, the ex-Wing who comes to Joe Louis Arena Wednesday with the Anaheim Ducks, Kennedy believes that Bertuzzi is still battling his inner demons over the hit he put on Windsor’s Steve Moore of the Colorado Avalanche in a 2004 game, a sucker punch from behind that to date has shelved Moore’s NHL career.

Bad Time For Ducks In London

It’s not that the Ducks and Kings shouldn’t play twice in Europe, but not two regular-season games. And not in England. If you’ve ever been there, you know how little use they have for ice.
Two exhibitions in Sweden or the Czech Republic or even Russia would have been perfect. The NHL has very little to gain in the U.K. besides the odd jersey sale.
If the league wanted to make any splash in Britain, it should have recruited the Phoenix Coyotes, coached by Wayne Gretzky, whose name might ring a faint bell with someone.
That would have satisfied the need for a Western team to suffer approximately the same hardship the Kings will. Certainly the fact that the Kings’ owners also own the arena in London was not enough reason for the Ducks to sign up.

Bertuzzi Looking For A Championship

Todd Bertuzzi is looking not for redemption, exactly, but for a fresh start in southern California. He’s in a market suddenly crazy for hockey again, playing for a manager, Brian Burke, who stood by him during the darkest days of the Steve Moore incident, with its resultant suspension and pending lawsuit.
He’s wearing the single digit No. 4 on his Anaheim Ducks jersey instead of the more familiar 44 because that number belongs to Rob Niedermayer, and fellow winger Chris Kunitz had dibs on 14.
Bertuzzi looks slimmer than he has in years, down to 230 pounds from the 245 that he played at for most of his career, seeking to get his career back on the rails again, after three mostly nightmarish seasons, played out in medical rooms and court rooms and just about everywhere but on the ice.

Bertuzzi Feels Great

I feel great, young and healthy,” said Bertuzzi, having had five days of consecutive organized workouts under his belt before getting started against the Kings Saturday.
“It was tough during my time with Detroit, I was really only at about 50 per cent, all beat up and sore during those games. It wasn’t so much my back but everything else was all smashed up—my tail bone was sore, I was a mess.
“Looking back on it, maybe I would have been better off not playing at all last year, but the summer was good and really, the opportunity was too good to pass up, playing with those guys. And we were really close to winning. That series (with the Ducks in the conference final) could have gone either way, at least we felt that way.
“But now to come to the team that just won the Cup, it’s pretty exciting.”
