RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with right wing Tom Kostopoulos on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Kostopoulos $700,000 in 2009-10, $950,000 in 2010-11 and $1.1 million in 2011-12.
“Tom is a character player who adds grit to our lineup,” said Rutherford. “He is a strong penalty killer and plays a high-energy game that will fit our team’s style of play.”
note: How nice is it that the Canes actually released the salary structure? Too bad the majority of teams do not do this.

Press release from the NHL:
Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos has been suspended for three games, without pay, as a result of being assessed a game misconduct during NHL game #197 against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 8, the National Hockey League announced today.
“While it is my determination that Kostopoulos did not deliver a check to an unsuspecting opponent, his actions caused injuries,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Kostopoulos is considered a repeat offender. Accordingly, he forfeits $32,926.83 based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (186). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

A statement from Kostopoulos released by the Canadiens:
“First and foremost, I sincerely regret the injuries suffered by Mike Van Ryn. This is an unfortunate turn of events. I was just trying to get in on the forecheck and get the puck. I didn’t anticipate him turning and couldn’t stop.
“I was trying to finish my check and obviously it did not end up well. I never intend on injuring another player. I feel bad. I hope he is going to be all right and resume playing as quickly as possible.”

Both Players Made The Right Play
by Paul on 11/10/08 at 09:23 AM ET

from Damien Cox at his Spin Blog at the Toronto Star,
Unless you want to change the rules, there’s not much that could have been changed about the hit on Mike Van Ryn on Saturday night.
Van Ryn was doing his job, trying to make the toughest, most courageous play in the game, which is hustling back to get the puck in your own zone knowing you’re going to get drilled into the end boards.
Don’t tell me about the “tough guys” of the games, the guys who scrap. Tell me about the Van Ryns who make that play night after night. Those are the tough guys. Those are the players you need more of to make a tough hockey team.
So Van Ryn was making the right play. So too was Tom Kostopoulos, a 29-year-old winger from Mississauga who isn’t in the league to be fancy and score but to skate hard, finish his check and be a grinding forward.
In case you missed the hit, you can see it here…

from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,
A 6-3 Toronto victory, during which the home side outplayed Les Glorieux by a hefty margin, was marred in the first period when Leafs defenceman Mike Van Ryn was sent to hospital with a concussion, broken nose and broken left hand after he was smashed from behind into the boards by Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos. Later in the period, Leafs rookie defenceman Luke Schenn went hard into the boards when he was tripped by Andrei Kostitsyn.
Van Ryn, who was knocked out on the play, will be out for at least a month. Schenn was not hurt.

Escalating the War of Words
by Alanah McGinley on 04/28/08 at 01:07 PM ET

From CBC,
Kostopoulos earned a two-minute roughing minor on the play, but the war of words has escalated ever since.
“Kostopoulos, he’s a tough kid and I’ve got a lot of respect for him and [Steve] Bégin,” Philadelphia head coach John Stevens said. “But to go up and blindside sucker Kimmo Timonen on a play at the end there, that’s cowardly, in my opinion.”
Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau has been anything but quiet about the criticism of his player.
“That’s one team that shouldn’t talk,” Carbonneau said of Stevens’s comments. “They played 82 games and had the most suspensions in the league.”
And over at the Philadelphia Daily News, Rich Hofmann also expects things to get nastier in this series, citing this quote from Carbonneau:
“I think [Timonen] deserved it. That’s why they didn’t call any (major) penalties on it.”

League Rules No Suspension For Kostopoulos
by Paul on 04/27/08 at 02:32 PM ET

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,
Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos will not be suspended for his left hook sucker punch to the face of Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Kimmo Timonen on Saturday.
The NHL hockey operations office reviewed the incident and ruled that because Kostopoulos was penalized on the play and Timonen was not injured, no further discipline was necessary.
added 4:00pm,
Less than 24 hours after his team was accused of commiting a cowardly act by Philadelphia coach John Stevens, Guy Carbonneau has rushed to his players’ defence – especially atoning the behaviour of Tom Kostopoulos.
“That (the Flyers) is one team that shouldn’t talk,” the Canadiens coach said Sunday, after his team participated in an optional practice in LaSalle. “Over 82 games, they had the most suspensions in the league.”

Facing The Public Opinion Court
by Paul on 02/12/08 at 10:57 AM ET

from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,
Defenceman Ryan O’Byrne and Tom Kostopoulos were arrested yesterday, and the first thing that jumped out at me as I read the police report was the time and place of the incident - 3 a.m. outside a bar.
Over the years, we’ve seen numerous stories about athletes running afoul of the law. The offences have run the gamut from players urinating in alleys to incidents where people have been killed. The two constants in many of those cases have been alcohol and late hours.
How come these incidents nev er take place at 3 p.m. in a library?
The legal system will decide whether O’Byrne is guilty of third-degree grand theft and whether Kostopoulos was out of bounds when he went to the defence of his teammate and was charged with resisting arrest without violence.
But the two have already been subjected to the court of public opinion and they’re both guilty of being stupid.

Crawford With Flat Hair
by Paul on 11/11/07 at 10:14 AM ET

The Montreal Gazette has a Q & A with Tom Kostopoulos...
What is the craziest prank you have seen?
“In Los Angeles, I used to switch the gel and the shampoo, and one day Marc Crawford went to gel his hair and used the shampoo. And the way he likes his hair perfect, it was pretty funny when he came out and it was all flat and he was pretty fired up about it. Marc Bergevin, when I was in Pittsburgh, he was crazy. He used to dress up like the other team’s mascot before the games, wear wigs or dress up like a 1970s dancer and dance for everyone. He was probably the funniest prankster and craziest guy I have met.”
