Prospal Signing Official

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Vinny Prospal.

“Vinny is a highly-skilled player with good offensive instincts and the ability to play on the wing or at the center position,” stated Sather.  “We think he will give us added flexibility and brings a veteran presence to our lineup.”

Lecavalier On Prospal

from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,

Over the years, Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier and linemate Vinny Prospal have become great friends. So it was not unexpected that Lecavalier would react strongly to the news Prospal will be bought out of the last three seasons of his four-year deal.

“Obviously, I’m very disappointed,” Lecavalier said from his Montreal home. “I feel for him. I know he really loves Tampa, so I was disappointed. I always said I like to play with Vinny Prospal, and every time he had a bad year, he came back and had a great one.”

Lightning Plan To Buy Out Prospal

from Erik Erlendsson of Bolts Report,

The Lightning on Tuesday informed left wing Vinny Prospal that the team is buying out the remaining three years of his contract.

Tampa Bay general manager Brian Lawton sent a letter of intent to Prospal and his agent informing them of the decision. Prospal has 24 hours to decide whether to accept the buyout or request to be placed on waivers.

Prospal, who was reacquired from the Philadelphia Flyers before last season, signed a four-year contract worth $14 million last June. He has $10.5 million remaining on his deal.

Lightning Hits Prague

From Damian Cristodero at Lightning Strikes:

About 100 or so fans were there to meet the bus. As the players got off, the Czech natives (Vinny Prospal, Radim Vrbata and David Koci) were swarmed by kids seeking autographs and television and newspaper cameras. Vinny Lecavalier was treated as royalty as well. As he walked from the bus to the rink, at least six men snapping pictures walked backwards in front of him, all while a crowd asked for autographs.

“It’s special,” Prospal said later in the locker room. “It’s my home country. It doesn’t happen every day like that. I’ll enjoy it for a couple of days. Now I know what Vinny has to do every day of his life.”

Flyers Need More From Prospal

from Mike Sielski of phillyBurbs,

“Vinny’s a great passer,” Stevens said yesterday at Mellon Arena, after the Flyers practiced. “He’s got great vision with the puck. He gets standing still and not moving his feet too easily when he gets checked, and I thought that was the case (Friday) night. When he’s moving his feet, when he’s jumping off the wall, when he’s giving and going, more things happen for him. I thought he got a little bit away from that.”

Though the jargon and coded language of a coach and teammate too generous to call out Prospal publicly, there came a clear message: Start skating, Vinny. Start working harder and doing more.

Prospal Speaks Like Tortorella

from Lightning Strikes,

But it was difficult to ignore Prospal’s outburst, though Torts did his best.

“I’m not here to be the happy man and make everybody happy,’’ he said. “I’m here to make calls as far as the game is concerned.’’

And this after Torts was asked if he sensed some relief in Prospal:

“I’m sure there was quite a bit of relief and a few other things, too. That’s life. He played really well. Athletes that are upset, they contribute and help the team win, coaches are happy. This isn’t a touchy-feely thing here or love fest. This is a game of hockey and we’re fighting for our life.’’

Prospal Off to Lightning Fast Start

From Carter Gaddis at The Tampa Tribune,

Foremost in Vinny Prospal’s mind coming into his 11th NHL season was to get off to a good start. After a drop in production to 55 points last year from 80 in 2005-06, it was imperative that he not allow the downward spiral to begin again.

“I just didn’t want to go through what I went through last year,” Prospal said after scoring two goals in Tampa Bay’s 5-2 victory Saturday against Atlanta. “Everybody struggles, but it’s always easier when you get to that point in the season when you have something to look back to. And last year, from the beginning, I really didn’t have anything to look back to.”

Prospal — who has entered the final year of his contract with the Lightning — didn’t score his third goal last season until the team’s 18th game on Nov. 15. Through two games, he has three goals.
