The Re-Birth Of Wade Redden
by Paul on 10/14/09 at 08:50 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
If Wade Redden looks like a different player in his second season with the Rangers, and he does, much of the improvement can be credited to the fact that he is now playing in a system that maximizes his skills as a skater and puck mover while minimizing his deficiencies in defensive zone coverage and reading the rush.
Redden might as well have been on an island last year, so lost was he playing coach Tom Renney’s safety-first system, in which the defense invariably seemed to be backing up or battling for survival in its own end of the ice.
But now, six games into Year Two on Broadway, which continues tonight at the Garden against the Kings, Redden appears liberated by the puck-pressure system installed by head coach John Tortorella.

Redden Playing For Wins
by Paul on 04/17/09 at 10:10 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
So yesterday, after a night on which he and partner Michal Rozsival were called on in relief of Marc Staal and Dan Girardi to contain the essentially uncontainable Alex Ovechkin in Game 1 against the Caps, Redden chuckled when I asked him whether he not only considered the playoffs as a clean slate, but whether he believed he was in need of one.
The question could have been the opening of a cross-examination had Redden been in a courtroom witness chair rather than a hockey locker room.
“Whether it was a good or bad regular season doesn’t matter at this point,” Redden said a day after his 27:35 of work contributed to the Rangers getting the series jump, 4-3.
“All that matters is we win every night, and that’s where my focus is, helping the team out.”

Redden A Target In New York
by Paul on 03/22/09 at 10:45 AM ET

from Doug Fischer of the Ottawa Citizen,
By the time he arrived in New York last fall, however, Redden was only a shadow of that player. Everyone has a theory about why. The most popular suggests he’s never trained hard enough, relying instead on skills that eroded rapidly with age.
Whatever the reason, New Yorkers weren’t interested in anything except results. There is nothing they love more than a sports hero except, perhaps, the chance to excoriate a well-paid sports hero who is underachieving.
And that was Redden, whose Rangers play the Senators in New York tonight....
So when the team began to sputter in late November and New Yorkers went looking for a target, Redden was an easy bull’s-eye.
Led by (Larry) Brooks, said to be the most-read hockey writer in New York, the media began almost to delight in cataloguing his errors. By Feb. 15, and without a goal in 57 games, Redden was being referred to on radio and in print as GSF—Glen Sather’s Folly, Brooks’ shot at the general manager who signed him.

Redden Hurting The Rangers
by Paul on 03/15/09 at 09:39 AM ET

from Jay Greenberg of the NY Post,
Wade Redden, who either needs to have his attention caught at the end of the bench or simply can’t play in the NHL anymore, probably would be helping the Rangers best from Hartford, but there is no alternative to him in the system and, with five years to go in a depressing, cap-killing, six-year, $39 million deal, surely no takers. So what is a new coach to do besides what the old coach did?…
On Arron Asham’s back-breaking first of two goals, Redden, a defenseman of 12 years NHL experience, mindlessly put his stick blade to the outside, allowing rookie Claude Giroux’s pass out to go inside for a slam dunk.
Redden didn’t lose this game by himself, but do you need a full hand to count one he has helped the Rangers win?

Redden Takes On Old Team

from Sam Weinman of Rangers Report,
...here is what Redden said about facing the Senators tonight. He said he met up with Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Phillips, and only then did the significance of tonight start to hit home.
“I just think it’s the final recognition, going up against the old guys,” Redden said. “I think it’s a good thing. It really hit home just seeing the guys yesterday. It was different. I’m excited about playing them. It’s been a big change this year. I don’t know. I’m just looking forward to getting out there against them and knowing that I am against them. It’s good to finally play them.”

Reflecting on Last Years Senators
by Alanah McGinley on 10/03/08 at 03:42 PM ET

From Peter O’Neil of Canwest in the Leader Post,
Former Ottawa Senators defencemen Wade Redden and Andrej Meszaros rejected Friday speculation that their former team’s collapse last year was linked to excessive partying.
The two players, who will play against each other here Saturday when Redden’s New York Rangers face the Tampa Bay Lightning, also said they never witnessed inappropriate off-season behaviour involving former teammate Ray Emery, who was asked during an interview with ESPN.com in August about whether he used recreational drugs.
Both players cited other reasons - Redden spoke of a failure to maintain the team’s historic commitment to team defence, while Meszaros suggested that exhaustion over the long playoff run the year before ultimately led to Ottawa’s second-half flop.

Redden Meets His Old Team

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Wade Redden can finally turn the page on his career with the Senators tonight.
The former Senators defenceman is getting accustomed to life in Manhattan, but he’ll get his first real look at Broadway tonight when he makes his debut on the New York Rangers blue line against his ex-teammates.
Redden, who spent a decade in an Ottawa uniform, isn’t sure how he’ll feel when he looks across the ice at all the familiar faces, however, he’s excited about the possibility of suiting up for New York.

Columbus Chasing Redden
by Paul on 07/01/08 at 06:51 AM ET

from Puck-rakers,
I’ve been told that the Blue Jackets will make a “significant” offer to defenseman Wade Redden, that he’s been targeted as their No. 1 priority when free agency opens at noon on Tuesday.
There are no guarantees that Redden will sign with the Blue Jackets, of course, but I’ve been told that if Redden turns down the Blue Jackets’ offer, it won’t be because of money.
I’ll take a stab: 6 years, $38 million.

Murray Talks Sens
by Paul on 06/13/08 at 12:46 PM ET

Ottawa GM Bryan Murray was on Fan590 in Toronto a talked a bit about Ray Emery and Wade Redden. It looks Emery will be bought out unless Murray can find a trade partner for him in the next week or so. Murray feels it is better if the part ways even though Hartsburg did coach Emery in Sault Ste. Marie.
Murray talked a little Wade Redden too and said he will not be able to match what Redden can get on the open market, so it looks like he is gone come July 1st.

Leafs Rumors

All the news from Spector:
Thankfully we’ll know in about three weeks what Sundin will do, putting an end to months of speculation over his future. I still have my doubts that the Leafs will buyout Tucker but I am convinced Raycroft will be bought out. As for Redden, why would the Leafs want him?

Redden In Demand
by Paul on 06/06/08 at 10:01 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
An NHL source said yesterday that Panthers GM Jacques Martin—a former coach of Redden with the Senators—is going to take a hard run at signing the veteran defenceman off the open market.
The Panthers’ top priority in the off-season is signing a puck-moving defenceman and Redden, who struggled last year as the Senators’ highest-paid player, fits the bill.
The Panthers won’t be alone in their pursuit of Redden, who will likely have to take a cut anyway to sign with another NHL club, although only to the $5-million range. It’s believed the Blackhawks, Canucks, Predators, Flyers and, possibly the Maple Leafs have an interest in Redden.

Redden’s Last Games With The Sens
by Paul on 04/07/08 at 07:53 AM ET

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,
Some will say he has already moved on.
But the fact remains that Wade Redden is a key member of the Senators and if he can somehow turn up his game, the 30-year-old defenceman will greatly enhance this team’s chances of a first-round upset while helping himself re-establish appeal to other NHL teams.
Redden, one of the most popular Senators ever, has as few as four games left here. With Redden set to become an unrestricted free agent in July, Ottawa won’t even bother to try to re-sign him

Report- Redden Turns Down Request To Waive NTC

from Darren Dreger of TSN,
Sources tell TSN that Ottawa Senators’ general manager Bryan Murray met with veteran defenseman Wade Redden Friday morning about the possibility of waiving his no-trade clause.
According to the source, the request was made following an inquiry from the San Jose Sharks into Redden’s availability.
As he has in the past, Redden turned down the request as he remains committed to the Senators’ quest to win a Stanley Cup.

Redden Willing To Take Less To Stay With Ottawa
by Paul on 11/06/07 at 06:40 AM ET
Comments (1)
from the Ottawa Sun,
“I would feel real good leaving next year and see them win the Stanley Cup,” he said, sarcastically.
So, with that in mind, Redden admitted to Sun Media he would consider taking a pay cut from his current $6.5 million salary to stay....
Redden has no idea how much he’s willing to leave on the table to stay and be a part of what is going on here. He’ll have to talk to Meehan about that, he said. But that should be encouragement enough for Senators GM Bryan Murray to be proactive—as he has been so far—to keep Redden.
Update 12:42pm ET: (Alanah) Some Senators/Redden salary cap math from Mike Chen a few days ago.

Sens Would Like To Sign All Their UFAs
by Paul on 09/22/07 at 06:46 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
As a matter of fact, Murray said he has already had contract discussions with Redden’s agent, Don Meehan.
“I don’t know (where the Redden stuff comes from),” said Murray. “(Reporters) ask me about trying to sign Heatley and Spezza and then the conclusion (from reporters) is always nothing about those two at all, it’s always about eliminating another player. That’s not what we’re trying to do here. We’re going to try to do as well as we can with the people that we have and, obviously, keep them here.
“But there are a lot of factors involved here: The total dollars, the cap system and can we keep everybody? Will everybody give us an opportunity to sign them or will it be impossible because of the numbers?”

Redden Remains Focused Despite Trade Talk
by Paul on 09/12/07 at 07:31 AM ET
Comments (0)
from the Ottawa Citizen,
From a financial point of view, Redden is also fully aware of the perfect storm that faces Senators general manager Bryan Murray next summer, when Redden, left-winger Dany Heatley and centre Mike Fisher can become unrestricted free agents. At the same time, Meszaros, centre Jason Spezza and wingers Antoine Vermette and Patrick Eaves will be restricted free agents.
Something has to give in Murray’s salary-cap equation by next summer, if not earlier.
Redden would appear to be the most likely option to move, considering the weight of his salary. While he exercised his no-trade clause to prevent a move to Edmonton, the possibility that he will be moved will probably remain until the trade deadline in February.
