A Dying Breed

We come to you today to express concern for an endangered species.

We are talking about the Winnipeg Jet, a creature once beloved and abundant in these parts.

Now, 12 years after the local NHL team became extinct (or at least packed up and flew south to Phoenix) they are truly a dying breed.

With the retirement of former Jet Stu Barnes Thursday, a month after Dallas Drake did the same thing, there are now only seven ex-Jets with the potential of playing in the NHL this coming season.

Slowly Forgetting the Jets

It’s difficult to forget how in the immediate aftermath of the Jets’ departure to Phoenix, the sense of mourning—for most hockey fans, at least—was palpable. There were fond and fresh memories of white-outs, now a staple in the land of the Penguins. Then there were long-standing feelings of bitterness and cynicism toward a league that never really wanted Winnipeg in the first place.

Not to mention the subsequent hundreds of millions of dollars frittered away to finance the facade of the NHL someday operating a successful franchise in the Arizona desert.

But now, with the passage of time, there’s a void replaced by… what? Ambivalence? Acceptance? Disinterest?

Story of a Trade

I was recently asked, of the many trades I made, which had the most interesting story to it? I answered immediately, “the Tie Domi-Kris King for Ed Olczyk trade I made with Neil Smith in New York while I was in Winnipeg.”
