Mark Streit named the 13th Captain of the NY Islanders

Shortly before 3 PM this afternoon, Mark Streit was named the 13th captain of the New York Islanders. This is a smart choice by the Islanders. Tavares will have his day being captain in the future. Tavares can lead without the ‘C’ and this will give him time to play his game and put up points without the pressure of being captain. Streit becomes the first Swiss born captain in NHL history. Streit on being named captain:
It’s a privilege and honor to be the Islanders captain. I think the future is now. We want to win games.

Islanders Will Name Their New Captain Later Today

As Arthur Staple of Newsday reported here last night, the Islanders will name their new captain today. I agree with Staple that the new captain will be Mark Streit. My take on the NYI captaincy situation from a few weeks ago can be found here. There are many candidates to wear the ‘A’, but I think the alternate captains will probably be Kyle Okposo and Frans Nielsen.
