Novice Petes Capture Barrie Ball Hockey Fall 2009 Championship in Overtime Thriller

William Lowe scored at the 4:59 mark of the first overtime period to win the Fall 2009 Championship for the Novice/Minor Atom Petes at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club this past weekend.  Jackie Couture and Ciera Winterkorn assisted on the championship winning goal.

The third place Petes defeated the #2 seeded Rangers to advance to the finals against the top-ranked Knights, who beat the Ducks in an earlier semi-final match-up.  Despite featuring the division’s three highest scorers in Lowe, Kelby Parkinson (Knights), and Dawson Oakes (Petes), each side was held to just one goal in regulation play.  Luke Dorey gave the Knights a first period lead before Lowe and Oakes set-up Justin Ierullo-Gerrior on the game-tying goal in the second period.  Lowe and Parkinson, playing in their third game of the day and eighth of the tournament weekend (both boys also play in the club’s progressive division) logged marathon minutes for their teams.  The teams exchanged chances for the next twenty minutes, requiring goalies Sam Murray and David Butler to deliver superior efforts.

The decisive goal came after both teams had been pressing, and the ball was dumped into the Knights’ end.  A turnover in the corner resulted in Lowe picking up the ball in the slot, positioning himself on the outside of his defender, and burying a hard wrist shot into the back of the net.

The coaches of the championship team were Jeff Couroux and Lee Couture.  After the championship trophies were presented, Winterkorn received a special trophy for “Best Sportsmanship”, while Sam Sapiano was named the team’s “Most Improved Player”.  Lowe (19 goals & 21 assists in 12 games) and Murray (2.42 goals against avery) won the awards for the League’s Top Scorer and Top Goaltender respectively.
