Puck Rock: Boyd Devereaux

In my eyes, Boyd Devereaux may just be the luckiest dude on the planet. Here’s a guy who’s got a Stanley Cup ring and his own indie rock label, Elevation Recordings (no relation to Elevation Partners, the Bono-powered venture capital firm). Currently back with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Devereaux’s seemingly got the most in-depth musical taste of any player in the NHL; he’s probably the only guy you’ll be able to find on both TSN’s and Stereogum’s archives.

From Radiohead to Black Sabbath to Mogwai, Devereaux’s favorites are a virtual catalog of indie rock and college radio essentials—and he’s the focus of this edition of Puck Rock. For you music geeks out there, you’ll marvel at his selection of tracks.

Rangers Get Draft Pick For Cherepanov’s Death

A report on the New York Post stated that the New York Rangers got a compensatory second-round pick for the death of prospect Alexei Cherepanov.

Now I know this is a delicate subject, but it took a little digging for me to understand how and why this was awarded. From the Hockey’s Future FAQs, here are the reasons why compensatory picks may be allocated:

The Fate Of Beat Writers

247WallStreet (via Time) posted a story today about the next ten major newspapers to potentially undergo significant upheaval. What does that mean? Disappearing all together (like the Rocky Mountain Daily News) or going all-digital on a trimmed staff. It’s all part of the digital shift in media. Newspaper subscriptions are way down because people don’t have a need for a daily paper anymore. Because of that, advertising dollars drop way down and suddenly the parent companies are looking at huge losses.

How does that affect the everyday hockey fan? Well, while we may no longer have any more need for game recap stories by beat writers (AP reports and instant online highlights have killed that necessity), the most valuable thing I get out of each beat writer is their blog. I grew up with the San Jose Mercury News and I cut my subscription to that about two years ago since I could read it for free on the go either on my computer or on my phone. However, David Pollak’s Working The Corners blog is an invaluable source of gameday information and insider highlights.

That being said, if 247WallStreet is right, we may be losing significant team coverage as just about all of these papers have assigned a team beat writer with a blog similar to Pollak’s. Here’s the list:

Anatomy Of A Slump

4-5-1 and 5-4-1…not great records, but not exactly the end of the world. Still, when you’re the Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks, respectively, greater things are expected. Let’s look at how the Bruins and Sharks fell back down to earth over the past ten games:

Looking Ahead—Far Ahead

Now we know how the rosters are going to look from here until the Stanley Cup is awarded…but what about after that? After all, only one team really gets to claim a successful season. Then it’s all about making trades at the draft and buying up free agents to re-shape your roster. Here’s a list of each team’s current cap hit for next year.

Keep in mind that the cap will apparently be staying very close to where it is now as a lot of this year’s revenues have already been accounted for (2010-11 is when the cap should drop assuming fans have less money to buy tickets in a poor economy). All numbers courtesy of NHL Numbers (check them out if you want to see how many holes your team will need to fill come July 1).

Off Topic: U2 - No Line On The Horizon

From time to time, I’ll post fanboy reviews of different new releases in entertainment. In most cases, it’ll either be music (mostly notable indie rock releases) or geeky genre movies. If none of this interests you, feel free to politely ignore these posts.

However, if you need a break from the madness of trade deadline day, this might be a breath of fresh air.

Who Was That?

Olli Jokinen, Derek Morris, Olaf Kolzig…sure, you know who those guys are, but what about some of the lesser-known assets that were in play during the trade deadline? Here’s a quick primer of guys you probably never heard of. Judging by where they were drafted and what they’re currently doing, chances are you probably won’t ever really hear of them. All profiles courtesy of the good folks at Hockey’s Future.

First Of The Gang To Die

(Bonus points if you got the reference in the post title)

Stick a fork in ‘em, they’re done.

We’ve talked for so long about how the Western Conference was filled with a tight race where all 15 teams could make the playoffs. About a week ago, I proposed that if the Colorado Avalanche and Phoenix Coyotes didn’t get at least seven points in their next five games, they’d be out.

A few losses later, you can count the Western Conference now as the Magnificent 13.

Dart Boards, Hogwash, and ‘Buzz’

Like many of you, I found the site HockeyBuzz Hogwash to be a pretty jolly laugh. Longtime readers know that I’m no fan of Dwayne “Eklund” Klessel, and I still shake my head in wonder when I see people pay money for his “rumors.” Still, someone paid Miss Cleo money, so there’s a sucker born every minute.

One of the neat things about HockeyBuzz Hogwash is their success tracker. As the Forechecker pointed out, even a broken clock is right twice a day; the Hogwash tracker shows that Dwayne’s accuracy rating is about 3%.

Now, let’s think about this logically:

Wil Wheaton On Hockey

Wil Wheaton is one of my favorite Star Trek-actor-turned-writer-and-geek-blogger-and-voice-actor (ok, so he’s probably the only person who falls into that category, but I have great respect for The Man Who Would Be Wesley Crusher). If you didn’t know, Wil’s also a big hockey fan and the latest post at his blog is all about hockey —how he shares it with his family, his thoughts on Crosby v. Ovechkin, and how he feels about his beloved-but-tortured LA Kings:

This column isn’t really about hockey, but since I’m talking about it already, here’s something I’ve been thinking about for much of this season and all of last season: The NHL has made a big deal about cutting down on fighting, and it seems like the league is working very hard to eliminate it from the game. I think this is incredibly stupid, and makes as much sense as taking the infield fly rule out of baseball; it doesn’t happen that often, and casual fans may not understand what’s going on, but it’s a fundamental part of the game.

Whenever I suffer through yet another a Kings game where they’re just getting their asses handed to them while they continue to dump and chase, over pass, and take stupid offensive zone penalties, I long for Marty McSorley, Ken Baumgartner, or Tiger Williams to come off the bench, play some old time hockey, and get the team (and fans) fired up.

Read the whole thing here. Oh, and for those of you that enjoy my music-related posts, here’s another reason to like Wil—he’s got great taste in music too, and you’ll see references to bands like The Pixies in his writing.
