Kick Save By Wesley Crusher

For those of you who don’t know, Wil Wheaton is an actor/writer/blogger/generally cool dude. For sci-fi geeks like myself, we know him as much for his role as Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation as for his current writing (which bounces between pop culture observations, memoir writing, comic book writing, and tech articles for major websites). Now we know that he can do a kick save too:

When the other guy crossed our blue line, I was already way out of the net, near the bottom of the faceoff circle on my left side. I skated backward with him to force him to shoot on my terms. I guess I was near the crease when I saw him pull his stick back way over his head. “Oh good,” I thought, “he’s just going to try to blast it past me. Those shots almost always go wide, or right into my glove.”

The next thing I knew, there was an explosion in the rink, and a bright flash of light before everything went dark. When the lights came back on, I was on my knees, surrounded by a semicircle of skates. I pulled my helmet off, and watched a whole bunch of blood pour down onto the ice.

“Oh, the way it beads up is really neat,” I thought. Then, “Wait. That’s my blood.”

California’s New Owners

No, the State of California isn’t for sale, despite what local lawmakers are trying to do with yet another freakin’ budget crisis. The BATTLE of California (the wacky dialogue between Kings, Ducks, and Sharks bloggers featuring inimitable cartoons and more cursing from me than I have on my Kukla blog)? Yep. It’s been sold—well, sold in the way that it’s been moved from the free Blogspot location to the fancy schmancy digs of Lord James Mirtle’s Sports Blog Network.

Wake the neighbors and phone the kids, the Battle of California is now bigger, badder, and meaner than ever before at battleofcali.com—and don’t worry, we’re not under any sort of censorship rules just because the good ol’ BoC’s gone corporate. That means that you’ll still see things like this when other teams try to sweep their Cali road trip.

Yeah, Chicago. You’re still feeling it, aren’t you?

The Oilers, Blogging, & The Sith

I’ve been asked about my thoughts on the whole Covered In Oil/Edmonton Oilers controversy and I’ve been trying to come up with the right way to express my feelings about it.

A quick look at Dave’s description shows how irrational and disrespectful the Oilers staff were to him. I mean, treat the guy with a little decency; if he’s breaking your standards and rules, let him know but don’t give him a metaphorical kick to the groin. That’s uncalled for.

End of an Era

Just a quick note that hockey fans should check out the final post at Jes Golbez’s Hockey Rants. He’s one of the original handful of hockey bloggers and also a contributor to AOL FanHouse. We’ll all miss Golbez’s wicked sense of humor and his unexplainable man-crush on Pavol Demitra.

Now Under Imperial Rule

Hello, Kukla readers, and check out my new digs in the Kukla Empire O’ Blogs! Hopefully, most of you know who I am. If you don’t, here’s a quick introduction: I’ve been covering the NHL on various sites for more than a decade, including Rivals.com (when they had money and covered pro leagues) and Sports Central. My blog started in 2004 and I started contributing to FoxSports.com in late 2006.
