Cosmo Hates Sean Avery

Boy, does this Sean Avery thing have legs or what? This morning, I hit the wrong pre-set on my XM Radio. To get over to Home Ice, I started scrolling through the channels. I did a double take when I thought I saw the words “Sloppy Seconds” flash across my display; a quick check back and yes, it was the topic of discussion on Cosmo Radio.

(The scary and wonderful thing about satellite radio is that they’ve apparently got a channel for everything. I’m sure the people who listen to Cosmo Radio think, “There’s a 24/7 hockey channel?")

After a few seconds, the name Sean Avery did indeed come up, as well as Dion Phaneuf. For the uninitiated, Phaneuf isn’t exactly the most pronounce-friendly name, so I’m surprised that the host was pretty close to saying it right. I’m guessing this was the first time the Calgary Flames were ever mentioned on Cosmo Radio. So what did they discuss in the 10 minutes or so that I listened?

-Whether Avery intended to hurt ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert or Phaneuf with the comment
-Whether Avery should be placed on the “Never Date” list
-Whether the comment was misogynistic or not and how men and women use it differently
-The size of Avery’s anatomy and whether it directly related to his self esteem
-The origin of the phrase (it was used in the movie Grease, apparently)

I can’t say it was the most enlightening 10 minutes of my life but it was still pretty fascinating to see how this Avery situation achieved visibility in areas that never, ever touched the NHL ("It’s a really gruff sport” according to one of the hosts). Well, if Avery really wants that second career working in fashion and women’s magazines, it sounds like they’ll know who he is, though they may not like him at this point.

Easy there, that’s a completely separate issue!

1) The NHL INCREASED coverage of the remarks. Else this story would have died down after the game. Now this will be discussed for days/weeks, and you can bet the next Dallas/Calgary game wil be a hot ticket!
2) maybe the league should do something useful by getting rid of the elbows to the head, never mind this nonsense. Bottom line opinion on this is Who cares what he said? You should be able to say whatever the hell you want about your ex-girlfriend and another player. He wasn’t threatening, graphic or really anything but Avery being Avery. Lets move on.

Faux Rumors is right. Even NHL.com said something about Sidney Crosby being the “Anti-Avery”. No one needed to say that. It’s already VERY well known.

They’re clearly baiting articles with his name to get more play.
