Lesson Learned Or History Repeats?

Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News sums up the delicate balance facing the Sharks and their fans going into Game 2:

“You’re probably right,” McLellan said Saturday when I suggested that the Game 1 defeat has allowed the Sharks to confront their weaknesses more directly.

“I think when you lose,” McLellan continued, “you have the opportunity to grab the players and they listen with their ears open a little bit more. We’re hoping that’s the case.”

And by “we,” McLellan meant not just himself and his staff. He meant the entire Shark Angst Enthusiast Nation.

Let’s clarify something: Our beloved Los Tiburones did not play horrible hockey Thursday. The Sharks had some excellent shifts. The problem was, they almost never followed up one excellent shift with another. The Sharks dominated certain segments of the first two periods, but they couldn’t put together three, four, five consecutive shift changes.

It was maddeningly familiar. Over the years, more than anything else, this has been the commonality in the Sharks’ playoff departures: They can’t sustain and close.

Read more here. Oh, and if you don’t know, tiburones is Spanish for Sharks…and Purdy is the only person on the planet to use that when describing the San Jose Sharks (he’s done it since their inception).
