NBC Quick To Pimp Sean Avery

Flipping around the XM dial last night, I caught a wide batch of games on my drive home and most carried this week’s NHL On NBC promo. Of course, because it’s NBC, it featured the New York Rangers. However, rather than mention Henrik Lundqvist or Scott Gomez, it went straight for whose career stats make him a third liner.
“Catch Sean Avery and the New York Rangers…”
Huh? Oh, I guess he’s back in the league. And I guess he’s back in the league’s good graces enough that they don’t mind him being the centerpiece of a promotional game for their biggest broadcast of the week. And I guess he’s good enough (that is, enough people know who he is because he pops up everywhere from US Magazine to Project Runway cross-promotions) to highlight as one of the biggest stars of the week.
Seriously folks. If people are going to go out on a limb to condemn the guy for using frat-boy language, then don’t shove him in the spotlight when he comes back.
9:42 AM PST: Just got this in my email—“Watch Jeff Carter and the Flyers head to the Garden to take on Sean Avery and the Rangers this Sunday on NBC!” It’s also got a nice graphic of Avery in the HTML message.

Kudos… I just noticed the same thing when I got the email from the NHL touting the Game of the Week matchup. Hypocrisy, thy name is Major League Sports.

THAT’s why Gary Bettman and Avery have an understanding. We publicly despise each other—but the bad-guy is good for the game. Every industry needs one of them…. There is no question that people are curious and the network is enticing ‘all of hockey’ to check-in and see if a two-week rehabilitation has changed the ‘foul-mouthed renegade’.
Thrilled he’s a Ranger again…...just think that…17 teams passed on him on waivers for the Rangers to pick him up for less than what Slats originally offered him to stay. Also, anyone that watched the game of the week last night got a real treat…..THE RANGERS ARE BACK——thanks to Torts.

I couldn’t agree more. I fin it hilarious how one moment he is in the doghouse then the next moment he is getting praise from all the NHL’s promotional commercials. “Yeah let us totally forget Henrik Lundqvist, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury…no, no its all about Sean Avery now that he’s back.” Its ridiculous. He was public enemy number one for a comment meant to stir something up in what was going to be a dull game. So for some reason they banish him? Now they exalt him…make up your feeble little mind Bettman.
