Notes from Sharks Training Camp

Just a few quick notes from today’s training camp scrimmage:

-The notable names on each team consisted of the theoretical second line (Joe Pavelski, Milan Michalek, Jonathan Cheechoo) in white and a hodge podge in black (Jeremy Roenick/Devin Setoguchi/Tomas Plihal, Mike Grier/Torrey Mitchell/Marcel Goc). Team white also had Jeff Friesen while team black was the public’s first look at Rob Blake.

-Alexei Semenov was there for team black. He didn’t really do anything notable but one really gets a sense of how big he is when standing on the glass.

-Jeff Friesen used his speed quite a bit and actually looked solid out there. He had a nice backhand goal and he looks like he’s slimmed down. If you recall Friesen’s last few seasons, his head strangely morphed into a big square block. He looks more like the familiar Freeze, though he’s wearing #13. If he makes the squad, I’m betting Tomas Plihal gives him #39 back.

-Rob Blake seemed to come out every other shift and was all over the place—in a good way. On one charge, he even led the forecheck himself, so Todd McLellan wasn’t kidding when he said he wanted the defense to be aggressive. Blake also shot the puck at just about every opportunity possible which is good to see.

-Jonathan Cheechoo was throwing his weight around. I don’t know if he’s got a chip on his shoulder from not being on Joe Thornton’s line, but he was getting much more physical than a lot of the veterans.

-Surprisingly, no rookie brawls occurred.

-The final score was 4-3, team white in a shootout. The shootout didn’t look any different from last season as Milan Michalek was the only player to score out of six shooters.

-Notable players not skating (they’re on the third squad not scrimmaging today): Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton, Ryane Clowe, Christian Ehrhoff, and Dan Boyle.
