NBC Quick To Pimp Sean Avery

Flipping around the XM dial last night, I caught a wide batch of games on my drive home and most carried this week’s NHL On NBC promo. Of course, because it’s NBC, it featured the New York Rangers. However, rather than mention Henrik Lundqvist or Scott Gomez, it went straight for whose career stats make him a third liner.

“Catch Sean Avery and the New York Rangers...”

Huh? Oh, I guess he’s back in the league. And I guess he’s back in the league’s good graces enough that they don’t mind him being the centerpiece of a promotional game for their biggest broadcast of the week. And I guess he’s good enough (that is, enough people know who he is because he pops up everywhere from US Magazine to Project Runway cross-promotions) to highlight as one of the biggest stars of the week.

Seriously folks. If people are going to go out on a limb to condemn the guy for using frat-boy language, then don’t shove him in the spotlight when he comes back.

9:42 AM PST: Just got this in my email—“Watch Jeff Carter and the Flyers head to the Garden to take on Sean Avery and the Rangers this Sunday on NBC!” It’s also got a nice graphic of Avery in the HTML message.

Sean Avery, Reality Star

No, no, no. Chris Drury, you’ve got it all wrong. You don’t treat the supposedly Broadway-bound Sean Avery like a recovering addict. That’s too technical, like something out of a Psych 101 book or an Al-Anon meeting. Can you say boring?

If modern television has taught me anything, it’s that you can exploit, erm, treat narcissism, anger, and any other sort of ego-driven behaviors not by counseling or understanding, but by creating absurd circumstances and documenting it all on film. Need a way to boost league revenues? Want to increase exposure? Maybe even help Sean Avery realize how and why he’s a douche bag? Let’s see what types of reality shows we could create with Mr. Ex-Cuthbert.

Cosmo Hates Sean Avery

Boy, does this Sean Avery thing have legs or what? This morning, I hit the wrong pre-set on my XM Radio. To get over to Home Ice, I started scrolling through the channels. I did a double take when I thought I saw the words “Sloppy Seconds” flash across my display; a quick check back and yes, it was the topic of discussion on Cosmo Radio.

(The scary and wonderful thing about satellite radio is that they’ve apparently got a channel for everything. I’m sure the people who listen to Cosmo Radio think, “There’s a 24/7 hockey channel?")

After a few seconds, the name Sean Avery did indeed come up, as well as Dion Phaneuf. For the uninitiated, Phaneuf isn’t exactly the most pronounce-friendly name, so I’m surprised that the host was pretty close to saying it right. I’m guessing this was the first time the Calgary Flames were ever mentioned on Cosmo Radio. So what did they discuss in the 10 minutes or so that I listened?

So THAT’S Why They Suspended Avery

Oh Gary, you are a cunning one. Trying to take the high road on Sean Avery’s “sloppy seconds” comment, you must have read this book by professional wrestling personality Eric Bischoff. Because I don’t see any online buzz about, say, Ron Wilson returning to San Jose or the intense Southeast battle between Florida and Washington tonight. But a quick look around the inter-tubes shows that your little suspension of Mr. Avery has got people talking NHL.
