About Eye on the Media

Eye on the Media, debuted on Kukla’s Korner in February of 2008, and deals with all the evil, weird and just plain insane things that happen when hockey ventures into the foreign worlds of TV, Radio and News Print. I am a student, and a communications major, in New Jersey, which by association means you can blame me for destroying hockey. I love hockey and wants to hear everything you have to say about the way our game is covered.

Cuthbert to call Olympic Hockey, Cole & Millen to Call Finals

From William Houston at The Globe & Mail:

The CTV consortium won a tug-of-war with NBC over hockey analyst Pierre McGuire. NBC proposed sharing McGuire, but the CTV group, which includes Rogers Sportsnet and CTV-owned TSN, insisted on exclusivity.

But McGuire will not work with Gord Miller, his regular broadcast partner at TSN.

In an unexpected move, McGuire will be teamed with Chris Cuthbert to call the big matchups at the Olympic hockey tournament, including the men’s gold-medal game.

Bob Cole and Greg Millen will call the Detroit Red Wings-Pittsburgh Penguins’ Stanley Cup final for Hockey Night in Canada.

This will be the first Cup final for Millen, who has provided game analyst on show’s second play-by-play team in the past. And it could be the last Cup final for the veteran Cole, depending on the CBC’s plans for him next season and Jim Hughson’s role in future NHL championship series.

Wow, its like someone at TSN read my mind… I was thinking while watching the playoffs this year, how obviously inferior Gord Miller’s commentary is to Chris Cuthbert, and its really an insult to Cuthbert to make him second fiddle. It was okay the first season after the lockout because NBC was also using Cuthbert, but recently theres no good reason for it. The only reason Miller is the #1 guy is because TSN didn’t have a real commentator under contract once they got the contract to broadcast NHL games.

Also, I was pleasantly surprised at the performance of Rod Black recently when Gord Miller was sick. Hes a natural and I think it would be great if they moved him also into the commentator’s seat and relegated Gord Miller to the analyst chair (instead of having guest analysts).

We all should send CTV a thank you note for “stealing” the D.C. and keeping him the hell out of our living rooms during the playoffs.

Amen, OTC, Amen.

But on the other hand, we’re going to be subject to even more “Mad Mike,” with the D.C. out.

Ooops, forgot to add that when I saw the headline my first thought was, “Damn, that girl moves fast. Just yesterday, she was “dating” Dion Phaneuf!”

LOL

Now that I know that Bob Cole is calling the Finals on CBC, it will now allow me to ditch CBC’s coverage after Game 2 when NBC jumps onboard for Games 3-7 of the series in the United States. I just can’t stand the mistakes Cole makes with penalties and player names not to mention it takes him ages to figure out who scored whenever there is a goal if he even does figure it out at all. As legendary as Bob Cole is, he’s just not the broadcaster he once was. I may still flip CBC on for Coach’s Corner but even then the NBC McGuire/Milbury intermission segments have made for great TV on their coverage so it may not be all that big a difference with the intermission productions either between the two networks. Doc Emrick is such an outstanding broadcaster for the NHL and does a terrific job on NBC. He is like a human encyclopedia of hockey because he knows just about everything on the past and present of the game. I assure you if he were Canadian and broadcasted on a Canadian network he would be adored here in this country but he works in the U.S. and as a result he doesn’t get any kind of attention or accolades in this country which is a shame because he has been a hockey broadcaster in the United States for well over 20 years and is one of the best in the sport right now. Emrick and Hughson are the two best on a national TV level with Chris Cuthbert not far behind. Speaking of Cuthbert, very surprising move to read that TSN is giving him the main role for the Olympic hockey coverage along with Pierre McGuire considering that Gord Miller does the lead NHL role for them. I like the move. I do feel Gord Miller has improved over time but Chris Cuthbert is still the best play-by-play announcer for hockey that TSN has and it’s a good move to me. Pierre does receive criticism for whatever reason maybe because he is too negative on certain players but one thing he is though is energetic and I like that about him. Amazing the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver are only two years away. I’m looking forward to it.
