About Eye on the Media

Eye on the Media, debuted on Kukla’s Korner in February of 2008, and deals with all the evil, weird and just plain insane things that happen when hockey ventures into the foreign worlds of TV, Radio and News Print. I am a student, and a communications major, in New Jersey, which by association means you can blame me for destroying hockey. I love hockey and wants to hear everything you have to say about the way our game is covered.

Saturday night’s all right! From the opening face off to the victorious hoisting of hockey’s Holy Grail, CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA continues a 55-year tradition, bringing Canadians exclusive, comprehensive coverage of the must-see 2008 Stanley Cup Final in High-Definition.

The series kicks off on Saturday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. ET, live from Joe Louis Arena with Scotiabank Hockey Tonight, followed by Henrik Zetterberg and the Western Conference champion Detroit Red Wings facing off against Sidney Crosby - in his Stanley Cup Final debut - and the Pittsburgh Penguins, the champs of the Eastern Conference.  Crosby and the young guns in Pittsburgh will be looking to lead the Penguins to their first Cup victory since 1992 (and third in franchise history), while Detroit will be looking to bring home the hardware for the second time this decade (and 11th in franchise history).

Highlights from the Pepsi, Lay’s, Gatorade present Bring Home the Stanley Cup grand prize winner’s playoff party will be featured during CBC’s coverage of the 2008 Stanley Cup Final, featuring six-time Stanley Cup champion Mark Messier delivering the Stanley Cup to the home of grand prize winner Adam Bourque, of Summerside, PEI.

The best-of-seven final resumes in Detroit on Monday, May 26, at 8 p.m. ET, as Niklas Lidstrom, Chris Osgood and the Red Wings continue their battle against Marc-Andre Fleury, Evgeni Malkin and the Penguins. CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA then heads to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, May 28 with Game Three at 8 p.m. ET, live from Mellon Arena.  On Saturday, May 31, Scotiabank Hockey Tonight sets the stage at 7:30 p.m. ET, live from Pittsburgh, followed by Game Four at 8 p.m. ET.  (Please see below for complete 2008 Stanley Cup Final broadcast schedule).

Great job of starting on Saturday, Bettman! I thought you used to be an NBA Exec? I guess you forgot to check the schedule to see who else was playing in Detroit! Yeah, the Pistons and Tigers are both home this weekend, I guess starting on Thursday would have been foolish, you would have had the stage all to yourself. Now Games 1 and 2 are on the same nights that the Pistons and Celtics are at the Palace...great job indeed!

They really shouldn’t be playing the same nights as the Pistons. Why not wait til Sunday to start...you’ve already wasted a whole week as it is. What is one more day.....but I’m sure Canada would have a problem with not having a Saturday night hockey game. Who watched TV on Saturday nites.....? Canada must be a boring place

Shame on CBC. They should not be saying that our network has “exclusive” coverage of the Stanley Cup Finals cause Games 3-7 of the series are on NBC and everyone in Canada has access to NBC so using that word in their press release is not very accurate and god forbid if they put Bob Cole on the mic as I suspect they will for the Stanley Cup Finals, I will skip over to NBC in a heartbeat as I will take Doc Emrick any day of the week over Bob Cole. I probably would still watch CBC for Coach’s Corner but other than that I will be watching Games 3-7 on NBC if Bob Cole is present on CBC for the series.

First Canada isn’t a boring place. HNIC for us is the same as MNF for Americans.

I agree with Ian from Hamilton that I’ll switch over to NBC if Cole is calling the games for CBC. I might go as far as to watch NBC’s intermission shows since Milbury will be doing them and he has now surpassed Cherry as my favourite commentator.

Great idea of broadcasting th games in different languages. They should perhaps do it during the regular season a well. Good job CBC!
