About Eye on the Media

Eye on the Media, debuted on Kukla’s Korner in February of 2008, and deals with all the evil, weird and just plain insane things that happen when hockey ventures into the foreign worlds of TV, Radio and News Print. I am a student, and a communications major, in New Jersey, which by association means you can blame me for destroying hockey. I love hockey and wants to hear everything you have to say about the way our game is covered.

No Worries, Hockey Voices Will Keep You Sane in Beijing

Before the schedule comes out today, I thought I’d let you know when to plan your Olympic-watching schedule if you care to do it based on what typical hockey voices are calling.  But honestly, if you do that, people probably going to think you’re weird.  But not me, because I love you.  Anyway, here’s the Canadian and American contingent:

CBC

The CBC, as both a Canadian network and the home of Hockey Night in Canada, naturally has quite a few puck-headed voices coming through.  There are a couple of pleasant/weird surprises though.  Former TSN hockey voice Paul Romanuk calls hoops, and Canadian Olympic Hockey team veteran (and Canadian Softball Olympic Team vet) Hayley Wickenheiser will do colour work for softball.

Ron MacLean - Primetime Host
Scott Oake - Track & Field/Swimming, Host
Mark Lee - Track & Field, Play-by-Play
Steve Armitage - Swimming, Play-by-Play
Elliotte Friedman - Volleyball, Commentator
Paul Romanuk - Basketball, Play-by-Play
Hayley Wickenheiser - Softball, Analyst
Jeff Marek - Judo, Play-by-Play

NBC

While lead hockey voice Mike Emrick will not be reprising his role as Water Polo play-by-play man, NBC does have it’s fair share of hockey folk calling the action in Beijing.  We’ll go down the gamut one-by-one here.

-Bill Patrick, VERSUS studio host will be serving in the same capacity any time MSNBC goes on the air, which will usually be from 2:00 A.M. to Noon daily.  Finally, a time of day where your mood matches Patrick’s in the VERSUS studio!

-Alex Flanagan, who occasionally dispatches reports for The NHL On NBC, will be hosting CNBC and USA Network’s coverage.

-Lindsay Czarniak, who does the same, will host Oxygen’s coverage.  Yes, the Oxygen network is covering the Olympics.

-Occasional VERSUS studio host, and MSG Hockey Night Live host Al Trautwig will call all things gymnastics at the games.

-Bob Neumeier, aka “Hobo Bob”, will be reporting on-site at the track & field competitions. as well as diving (Insert Sidney Crosby joke here).

-Rangers back-up play-by-play man Mike Crispino will call select basketball games in Beijing.

-A blast from the past, former Oakland Seals, New York Rangers and NHL On NBC play-by-play man Tim Ryan, whom my sophomore high school chemistry teacher described as “the worst hockey announcer.  Ever” will call canoeing and rowing.

-Former NHL On SportsChannelAmerica host Bob Papa is calling boxing once again.  Boy, we’re stretchin’ here.

-Current (That’s right, current) Atlanta Thrashers play-by-play man JP Dellacamera is the lead soccer announcer for NBC’s Olympic coverage.  Devils pre- and post-game host Steve Cangialosi will also call the beautiful game from Beijing.

-Finally, in a real God Bless America (and Canada where he was born) moment, former NBC/Versus/ESPN and current NHL Radio/Flyers color analyst will do play-by-play for table tennis (aka ping pong) and shooting, and be a color analyst for the badminton tournament.  Some of you might not know that Hands of Cement won a Quebec provincial high school tourney back in his younger days.  Enjoy the Olympics, folks.

Paul Romanuk is great. He lives over here now (UK) and actually was the studio analyst for a couple of games of the Stanley Cup Finals this last year.

He’s so knowledgeable..

shame he doesn;t commentate on the BBC feeds. As usual we’ll get stuck with a bunch of tools.

Also worth mentioning that Vic Rauter, who does fill-in play-by-play on hockey (and everything else) for TSN will be doing boxing PBP for CBC, while TSN’s coverage will be anchored by sometimes NHL PBP guy Dave Randorf and That’s Hockey host Gino Reda.
