About Eye on the Media
Eye on the Media, debuted on Kukla’s Korner in February of 2008, and deals with all the evil, weird and just plain insane things that happen when hockey ventures into the foreign worlds of TV, Radio and News Print. I am a student, and a communications major, in New Jersey, which by association means you can blame me for destroying hockey. I love hockey and wants to hear everything you have to say about the way our game is covered.

Wild Huge on the Dial

From Judd Zulgad at The Star-Tribune:
Minnesota’s 3-2 overtime defeat had an 11.3 rating (192,857 households) and 22 share on KSTC, beating every show in the Twin Cities market, including Fox’s tremendously popular “American Idol” (10.3/19) on KMSP and CBS’ “CSI: New York” (10.0/17) on WCCO.
The Wild game hit its peak with a 16.0 rating (273,072 households) and 33 share from 10:30-10:45 p.m. (The rating is the percentage watching a program among all television households; share is the percentage tuned in among those homes with TVs in use at the time.)

NBC Ignoring the State of Hockey

From The Minnesota Star-Tribune:
The Wild might be atop the Northwest Division standings but that wasn’t enough to earn it an appearance on NBC this season. In fact, the team never had a real chance to be featured on one of the network’s nine weekend telecasts.
Under terms of a flexible schedule agreement reached last spring, NBC had the opportunity to pick its Sunday games from a list of (usually) three matchups 13 days prior to faceoff. Those contests were pre-determined by the NHL and none included the Wild.
The Two NHLs

I made a post a couple days ago about NBC getting over the ratings Mendoza line (a 1.0, for those out of the know) and a reader made a comment about how the NHL has neglected the west coast in it’s general coverage and promotion. What that reader didn’t realize is that it’s not the NHL’s fault. For you see, there are really two National Hockey Leagues.
