About Eye on the Media

Eye on the Media, debuted on Kukla’s Korner in February of 2008, and deals with all the evil, weird and just plain insane things that happen when hockey ventures into the foreign worlds of TV, Radio and News Print. I am a student, and a communications major, in New Jersey, which by association means you can blame me for destroying hockey. I love hockey and wants to hear everything you have to say about the way our game is covered.

Hotstove: Could the Mullet be back in the Coaching Ranks?

According to Al Strachan on Saturday’s “Hockey Night in Canada” Satellite Hotstove, Tampa coach John Tortorella is on the outs.  Who might be the favorite to replace him?

The world’s greatest mullet.  That’s right, Barry Melrose would be prospective owner Owen Koules’ favorite on the list.  Tampa GM Jay Feaster would stick it out for the last two years of his contract.

I only post this because it’d make me wonder, since Melrose has been synonymous with ESPN’s hockey coverage for so long, where would they even go to replace him?

My best be would be that Ray Ferraro, former NBC studio analyst who recently worked the NCAA Frozen Four for the WWL, or Darren Pang, who left Bristol on good terms for Phoenix Coyotes color analysis, would likely be the men for Melrose’s chair.  Of course, Bill Clement is always available too.

And remember, it IS Al Strachan talking.

The Two NHLs

I made a post a couple days ago about NBC getting over the ratings Mendoza line (a 1.0, for those out of the know) and a reader made a comment about how the NHL has neglected the west coast in it’s general coverage and promotion.  What that reader didn’t realize is that it’s not the NHL’s fault.  For you see, there are really two National Hockey Leagues.

If the Deadline Doesn’t Get You Stoked… This Will

It’s Cup Time!

Despite all the annoyances FOX provided, the glowpuck and letting a man with no prior hockey experience host their pre-game show, give them some credit.  Four playoff games in one day, at one time!  The Center Icers would kill for that.

In the triumphant return of “The Final Horn”, our hero attempts to regain his hearing after listening to extremely loud rock and/or roll music at the NHL Store in New York City.  Plus, the soft sounds of the Foo Fighters at MSG.  Oh, and playoff outlooks for each team that played last night, plus more YouTube goodness.

It was a quiet, but impactive night in the National Hockey League.  In the inaugural edition of “The Final Horn”, I’ll break down last night’s games, riff on the top headlines of the day, and take down a Canadian institution.  Yes, out of all my respect for the Saturday Night Canadian Exclusive Game, I say it’s time for us Yanks to rebel against it!  Sort of…

An Honest Critique of the NHL on Versus

by Steve on 12/05/07 at 09:51 AM

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever quite gotten through 100% of a review of the NHL’s cable television carrier, VERSUS, without mentioning one of the following three things:

1. “...despite the fact that VERSUS is only in 73.8 Million Homes, compared to ESPN’s 100 million”
2. “I know no one cares about the National Hockey League, but...”
3. “Frankly, I don’t know what channel the games are on.”

So having gotten those three points aside, two and half years in, I’d like to give an honest assessment of “The NHL On Versus”.
