Building a winner from within

Craig Custance of the Sporting News interviews Barry Trotz about the formula for building a winning team in Nashville:

When a young player is drafted by the Nashville Predators, the chances of him playing for the Predators are pretty good… We’ve always believed in our assets and when we can acquire the Paul Kariyas and Peter Foresbers, we’ll go out and do it.  But our lifeblood and foundation of our club is really the draft and young guys.

The Preds are stocked with home-grown talent; looking at their current roster, 6 of the 7 defensemen have only played for Nashville at the NHL level.

They’ve been saying that for 11 years; many in the Nashville area (season ticket holders included) are sick of hearing that as well.  For many the lack of free agent activity during this past offseason shows that this team is not going to try to improve, and many think its just “staying afloat” until they can pack their bags...(Who knows about that one, im leaving the relocation alone) Their once packed farm system was emptied in the Forsberg deal; and they act like every draft pick was a steal from the rest of the league.  11 years of these “steals” should produce a division title or a deep playoff run you would think, but I suppose thats what people get for thinking.... But with the bonehead firing of Savard in Chicago, Nashville has the opportunity to move past the Hawks, because from what ive been hearing and reading, the Savard firing is part of a front office political struggle involving Scotty Bowman, with the GM Dale Tallon being the next to go....

I think Trotz is one of the top 3 coaches in the NHL.

Even though he has never won a Stanley cup, he should be considered for an assistant coaching position with team Canada in 2010.

Yeah. They have “home grown” talent....but their prize pumpkin is playing in Russia this year. I wish this team would just fold already.....I’m tired of the Nashville soap opera

I for one am very happy with how our organization is run and totally agree with building thru the draft. Yeah, we haven’t won a playoff round yet, but we could be Columbus and not even make the dance yet. . . . “Packed farm system was emptied in the Forsberg deal”, please research that a little. Parent was just one of many good solid D in the system and Upshall was injured more than half of his time with the Preds.

Nashville is a well-run team.
Poile and Trotz are some of the best in the business.
The Preds always play tough against the Wings.  If the previous owner had not forced Poile to decimate the team to reduce payroll, they would be even better.
